    Gold sushi meal

My date and I got to Sushi Gen a bit early but we were welcomed with open arms nevertheless. The waiter brought us water and when they fully opened at 3pm he came back to our table and took our orders. I tried the "Gold sushi" and the "Gold dragon". Both of the sushi trays were filled with sushi delicacy! So good! The salmon was tender and so were the other fish. My date also loved his sushi meals. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but when you enter you are greeted by a traditional Japanese atmosphere and a touch of modern decor. It's a very elegant place. Great for romantic outings, I think!

I love everywhere from here! Came to Winnipeg for a couple days and randomly found this sushi spot! And Bang!! Everything that we ordered surprised us in a good way! They have all you can eat and regular orders. Sashimi is sooo fresh! And we are lucky enough to get to try the limited chef's special! Crab meats, shrimp, avocado covering with cheese! So yummy! Definitely recommend for others!

Typical all-you-can-eat Winnipeg sushi restaurant. Mostly low grade, limited selection sushi for just below average price. Plain decor and decent-to-average service. Go on the weekend during lunch time for faster service and better food. I went out for the "all you can eat" lunch with my family on the weekend. The price is $1 lower on Sat and Sun, so it came to $13.99 per adult, and there was a $2 charge for all kids under three (silly, I know). First thing that annoyed me was the lack of sashimi in the lunch line up, despite a large sign on the window stating that "all you can eat includes sashimi". Our server did offer us an option to upgrade to dinner version which indeed includes sashimi, but costs $21.99 per person ($22.99 on weekdays). The maki rolls were just as expected - very heavy on densly packed rice. Roll selection was quite limited, mostly involving spicy, non-spicy and crunchy variations of the same few rolls. Since the menu does not contain any description of the food you're getting, here a quick legend: crunchy = with tempura flakes; spicy = drenched in mixture of mayo and hot sauce. I think hand rolls would make a better choice if you are not sure which rolls to order, since they have more balanced ingredient ratio, i.e. less rice. The ingredients were limited and of lower grade: farm salmon, cheapest nori and rice-green tea, pretty much what you'd get at majority of Winnipeg sushi places, but definitely fresh. Fortunately, besides rolls and lack of sashimi there was quite a large selection of appetizers and cooked items. Unfortunately, most were quite simple and rather unimpressive. Deep fried tofu and a tofu salad were the blandest thing ever. Even miso soup tasted unusual. Chicken Katsu and Teriyaki beef were OK, but that's about it. The only thing that pleasantly stood out was their tempura, particularly shrimp. To summarize: quantity, not quality. Just average, though you *could* do much worse. Good for people with large appetites and limited budget, though still not that cheap. I am highly unlikely to be back, unless I am in a group of starving friends.

Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse was the most popular Japanese restaurant then. It didn't and continues to not have ramen on its menu. Sushi restaurants were starting to bud in the city back then. On my first day in Winnipeg earlier this month, I wanted to grab dinner before driving to Steinbach. Since I had never had ramen at a restaurant in Winnipeg, I did a search and found GaiJin Izakaya. I said yes and drove over to this eatery. This restaurant is located in a plaza. There was plenty of parking when I had arrived. I parked and walked in. I was immediately greeted by a woman. I asked if I could get a table. She led me to a booth. I'm glad that I beat the dinner rush, as she asked other customers after me whether they had a reservation. There was a QR code on the table. You scan it to access the menu. The drink menu was there on the table. It was also online. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Gyoza - Miso ramen (bamboo shoots held) - Black sesame ice cream I added gyoza for $5 to make my miso ramen a combo. I recommend it, as gyoza as an appetizer on its own is $14.50. My miso ramen came with miso broth that contained both pork and chicken flavours. This dish featured chashu, wakame, bamboo shoots, green onions, and a marinated egg. I asked if I could get the bamboo shoots held. Done! My Diet Coke came out first. I got a glass with ice. I appreciated that gesture. I poured my beverage into the glass, which made my drink nicely cold and refreshing on a hot summer day. My gyoza came out next. The filling was pork and it was delicious. Each gyoza was flavourful and perfectly fried. They were crispy and yummy. My bowl of miso ramen came out next. I was excited. The best move that this eatery does is to separate the roasted seaweed from the broth. Most eateries dunk the sheets of seaweed in the ramen and you end up eating soggy, flabby seaweed sheets. I appreciated this detail. I had a bit of roasted seaweed left and put it off to the side on a plate so it wouldn't get soggy. My server was super effective clearing items off my table. She was about to clear my plate with the seaweed on it. I asked her to hold off, so I could grab my seaweed. I can't let that go to waste. I loved it. I was also paying for good roasted seaweed. The miso ramen here is exceptional. You can tell if the broth doesn't excite me if I don't consume the entire thing. I did here. The combination of pork and chicken broth with miso was tasty and brilliant. It was wonderful. I'm drooling. The ramen was bouncy and had the perfect chew. The slices of chashu were thick and tender. It had good flavour and I enjoyed the balance between the fat and the protein. I normally get corn, but completely forgot to order some. Oops! I was content with the green onions, wakame, and jammy, marinated egg. They pulled everything together to make this miso ramen so special and comforting. I was ready for dessert. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There was matcha and black sesame. I chose the latter. I don't have black sesame ice cream often. It was so creamy and had a delightful nutty flavour to it. It was the perfect ending to this meal. My server was attentive. She got me the bill. I let her know that everything was fabulous. She was delighted. I paid with a credit card and tipped. I tapped and I was done. I used the washroom before I made the brief trip eastbound to Steinbach. It was clean. No complaints. I got melon candy as a parting gift. I loved it. It's always a favourite of mine. This eatery is a gem for delicious, authentic ramen and gyoza. Come here! This place also offers sushi rolls, baos, and more. I'd love to return and try other items on the menu. However, I feel that I'll be back for more ramen. Priorities! (250)

Their ramen is excellent -- rich, flavourful broth and thick, tender cuts of char siu that melt in your mouth. The menu is huge, offering tons of variety beyond just ramen, so there's something for everyone no matter what you're craving. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes you get, and the service is fast, friendly, and efficient. The interior is clean and modern, with tidy tables and a welcoming vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. It's rare to find a spot that nails both quality and value, but GaiJin Izakaya does exactly that. Easily one of Winnipeg's best-kept secrets -- this place deserves way more recognition.

I love that this place looks more upscale - think Earls, but doesn't compromise the quality of their food. It is the only place I know of where you can get new style sashimi (sashimi that is slightly seared) and roles that are wrapped with either cucumber or radish. YUM! The last time I went here I tried their features roll which was called a velvet something or other. I was hesitant because it was $22 but it came with around 10 pieces and was AMAZballs. No regrets ordering it at all. Which does make me let you know that the sushi is on the pricey side, but worth it. All of the ingrediants are fresh and the drinks are well made. Some are weird combinations - like the ginger pear. Take that off the menu. When you make a reservation also think of where you want to sit. They have a party type room off the front hostess desk which is completely private, they have the lounge, the main floor dining (one side open to the chefs and the other closed) then they have the upstairs and the back room. Despite the lack of a business sign, there was crazy fanfare while dining here for lunch today. I had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, and unfortunately with the demand here you may have to wait outside. They don't have a system yet where they could call/text you to know when your table's ready. There was a bit of a fantasy theme with the menus here, as some of the items make you think of role playing games like Runescape or League of Legends. Even their website screams fairy tale/fantasy/video game themed. I had The Oak Ramen, which consisted of pork and chicken based kale milk soup, pork katsu, egg, dill, corn, wood ear mushroom, leek, onion flakes, black garlic oil, and sesame. This is one of the most unique bowls of ramen I've had, it's a diversion from your traditional chashu ramen. Their bowl is gigantic, though their portion sizes are only average to above average. You have a choice between their traditional ramen or thinner-style ramen, but I suggest traditional here. I can say in terms of the noodles, this is the best in the city. However I found the pork katsu didn't really fit in with the ramen; I would've preferred chashu for sure. I also had a Sylph matcha milkshake. I liked it, though $10 is slightly steep in my opinion. Service was a bit disorganized, and they need a numbering system if the demand they have for this place holds, because there were way too many people crowding the entrance. Hopefully they'll solve that eventually. Isekai is definitely now the best ramen place in the city. I'm sure they'll solve their teething issues with service and organization.
