The red delight and Salmon Tataki rolls were STELLAR
    Jon A.

Made a last minute reservation at Ryu on our 1 night trip in Nanaimo Turns out half the restaurants are closed Sunday. Did not realize this when I planned.... Ryu to the rescue. I gave them a call around 6pm and they were able to secure me a table at 730. The food and service was nothing short of EXCELLENT! we had their salmon tatami roll as well as the Red delight with a few apps. Everything that came out was better than the next - sushi was of high quality (fresh) and tasty!

    Hamachi Kama

For starters , We ordered the hamachi Kama, which is a Favourite dish of ours. What arrived was a massive work of art. The portion was huge and the fish was prepared perfectly. It was so crispy and fatty that it set the tone for an incredible meal. I have to admit I didn't have huge expectations on a quick sushi meal passing through Nanaimo but this place FAR exceeded expectations. The sashimi cuts were chunky SLABS and the okonomiaki was so big we took it to go. 10/10 would 100% recommend.

    Bento Box yummmmmmy!

Stopped in here as the other sushi place nearby was closed. It was fabulous! Waitresses and other staff were masked, social distancing adhered to and most importantly the food was fabulous! This may be our favourite new sushi! Hubby loves the Bento Box!

    Red dragon roll

We came here for lunch on our way to the airport. Service was friendly and attentive. We ordered the red dragon roll, chicken teriyaki bento box and beef udon. Food came out promptly and generous portions. Presentation was very nice and everything tasted delicious. Covid protocol was followed with staff wearing face masks and tables spread out. Would stop by again the next time we are in Nanaimo.

This place is way underrated. The sushi is an excellent value, being both reasonably priced and generously portioned. Don't be fooled by the casual ambiance, this place a true hidden gem. We were especially impressed with the salmon tataki roll with seared salmon and a slice of lemon. We asked for the sauce on the side and got a homemade pear dressing and homemade hot sauce in addition to the standard wasabi mayo. The service was fast and friendly, but be patient with them as it seems they can get a little overwhelmed when there is a big rush of customers. Overall we left extremely satisfied.

Take out only, somewhat limited menu. Everything was delicious. Reasonably priced and ready very quickly. I'll be back.

Nori Japanese Restaurant - Relegation Roll

We finally had to find out what all the hype was about!…read more We kept seeing this Japanese restaurant get top ratings and heard it was really popular in Nanaimo, so we decided to try it for ourselves. Was it actually worth all the hype? We ordered the Sora Omakase Sashimi (8 types, chef's choice) along with a few other special rolls, and the sashimi was the real star of the show. The fish was incredibly fresh and generously thick-cut, with a great variety of premium sashimi. We were impressed by the creativity, generous portions, and presentation. Compared to other sushi places we've tried in the city, the quality and attention to detail here really made a difference. The prices are a bit higher than some other restaurants on the island, but after tasting the food, we thought the quality made it worth it. If you love sashimi, we especially recommend trying their sashimi options. There are plenty of premium choices. The restaurant itself has a modern-chic atmosphere, and it was BUSY. We saw a mix of locals, visitors, and a steady stream of takeout orders. Despite the crowd, our food came out surprisingly quickly, and the quality stayed top-notch. Whether you want a casual sushi night for two or a place to celebrate with a group, the menu has enough variety to please everyone. We came in wondering if the hype was real, and left understanding exactly why it's so popular. Honestly, Nori deserves the 5 stars from us. We're not the Michelin Guide, but we can definitely see why people are talking about it. Food: 5/5 Must Try! Service: 5/5 Kids: 4/5 Presentation: 4/5 Parking: 3/5 Tips: * Reservations are highly recommended. * Walk-ins are accepted, but be prepared for a potentially long wait during busy times. * The menu is extensive, so take your time deciding. * Great option for everything from date night to group celebrations. Would I Return: Yes ‍

We were seated after a short wait, as there was only one server. They were friendly and attentive. They have quite a bit of ramen options ranging from tonkotsu to curry ramen. I went with the basic tonkotsu ramen and added an egg. I wanted to be able to taste the broth without anything extra. My aunt got their seafood ramen (Nagasaki champon). I was quite surprised by the portion and toppings for each. There was plenty of noodles. The pieces of pork were large and I liked the variety of toppings. The seafood one had soooo much seafood ( small shrimp, larger ones, squid, and mussels) and had plenty of veggies. Both ramens were quite filling. Typically I don't drink all the ramen broth due to it being too salty or rich, but I found their broth had just the right balance. It was flavourful and rich, but not overly in either. Although at first I thought the price was a bit high, the quality and quantity justify it. Overall, it was a great meal to end our day on the island. I'll definitely be a returning customer.
