Pleasantly surprised to find such high quality Japanese cuisine up on the coast. Fantastic fish quality, hand made gyoza, and lots of small details. I've had some of the finest omakase in Japan, Asia and pretty every major city in North America (Nobu, etc.) and this compares quite well to the very high end I've had in terms fish quality and overall. I've always loved this place but we had a weird experience today with a waitress named mandi. We came in to eat but didn't have a reservation so decided to order takeout. We didn't have a lot of money so we ordered 2 rolls and wanted to pay using two payment methods. She decided to split the bill as it would be easier for her. We asked for gluten free soya and a lemon slice, she wanted to charge us for it. I said no problem and to add it on the card. I don't know if she did? The machine wasn't working easily so I gave it back to her and she didn't program it properly. She seemed flustered and then laughed and said that she had customers to tend to, as though... we too, weren't customers ? Then, there was no gluten free soya or lemon slice added. So we went back to ask for it again. It was a strange serving / takeout experience and while I can empathize that the place was bustling, it kinda felt demeaning and off. I've always had great sushi here and usually a calmer and more relaxed / inviting experience but personally felt like we weren't seen as customers because we chose only to order 2 rolls this time around. Was pretty hyped to try this place considering all I heard was how authentic they are.... The dine in option was limited due to covid so we chose to do take out opposed to any added stress to staff. Since when is filling Dynamite rolls with Romane lettuce "authentic?" Was mostly rice with a sliver of avocado a prawn and the rest of the filling consisted of lettuce. If you are there for lunch, I highly recommend eating Ebi Fried Lunch set. Although not well known in North America, it is the authentic Japanese food!! The place has very nice decor. You can see the owners put thoughts & care into designing the restaurant. Loved the details on the wall at the back part of the dining room as well as their tables. Nagomi is pretty much our go-to restaurant for sushi on the Sunshine Coast. We've been there probably five times, in all seasons and the food has always been excellent and the service quick and efficient. We've been there as a couple, as a group of four, and as a family WITH A BABY and we've always been very well served. In the summer their terrace service is very enjoyable, but my favourite times might have been in the off-season. It's a very cozy little restaurant to while away a cold, rainy November or January evening. PS: the only reason I don't give Nagomi 5 stars is that I don't give 5 star reviews. Soooo good! What a pleasant surprise for a small town like Gibsons! They even had hamachi and it was really good! Service was attentive (not sure what the previous comments were about, but tonight's service was outstanding). They were much nicer than the bistro folks upstairs from them. We were deterred by the attitude by the host when I asked to look at the menu. In any case, it was such a treat to have an awesome dinner after a long day of sailing! Oh, my husband loved the sake flight... We ordered the sashimi trio (hamachi, tuna, salmon), ika and chicken karaage, salmon poke, hotate nigiri, and sweet potato croquettes and of course some kirin:) everything was delicious! read more

This quiet family run sushi bar is a great spot for Japanese food in Gibsons. We have eaten here twice on our way from Vancouver to Sechelt. The place is small but we got a table for two easily. The service is friendly and fast, even with only husband & wife running the place. The sushi is super fresh and delicious. We ordered miso soup, salmon sashimi, ebi and a few rolls: salmon, tuna, scallop and California. The price is middle of the road: $40 for our lunch for two. Wow. This place is fantastic! A tiny (6-8 tables) gem. We had spinach tofu and avocado gomaee which were incredible. White sesame paste on the bottom and black sesame paste on the top. Gorgeous and delicious. We also had yam crunch rolls. I was expecting yam tempura but instead the yams were baked and the rolls contained cashews and were topped with BBQ sauce. Unique and fantastic. Vegetable gyoza were also delicious with green dough. Every dish was novel in some way...and I eat a lot of sushi. I'd highly recommend it though you're kind of limited to small tables (4 max) or takeout. I've been been twice and it was exactly as delicious and charming both times! read more

I'm from Vancouver and have pretty much lived off of sushi--good, bad, and often mediocre-- for my adult life. I have to say this is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have been to, which makes me so happy to be living on the Sunshine Coast now. The sushi is excellent: fresh, authentic, delicious; but everything else on the menu that we tried is astounding as well. Last night we had octopus pancakes, gyoza, yam tempura, sea weed salad, fried oysters, chicken karaage and several nigiri pieces and maki rolls. I wanted to keep ordering off the appetizer menu because every thing I tasted was so good! Service was attentive and on point, and the Japanese couple who own the place are lovely. The space itself is small but impeccably clean with beautiful attention to detail and design. Price is a bit higher than the run of the mill Sushi place in Van, but the quality is so worth it. Went for lunch here - miso soup was a starter and right away I was impressed. It was rich with flavor and a good amount of green onion and seaweed in it. Not skimpy at all. It had a lot of depth and wasn't watery. The lunch special that I chose included agedashi tofu, salad, appetizer of the day, avocado cucumber roll, and the aforementioned miso soup. The roll was good, fresh, simple. The appetizer was lotus root and carrot in sesame oil. Very tasty. In fact all the ingredients tasted very fresh and authentic. I even ordered a 2nd bowl of miso soup at the end because it was so good! But that brings me to my one down side - the lunch was very well priced at $13 but it was definitely a light lunch. And there wasn't a ton of seating so I could see it getting very crowded or being better for takeout. Overall service was great. Restaurant was clean and tidy. I would go again. read more

I never had worst service than here! We arrived and promptly the waitress served us tea. After that she didn't come in the next 15 min. I called her to order. After 45 min the food wasn't there yet. When I asked her about our food she said "it was a long day" I explain to her we needed to catch the last ferry and she said. "Well I don't know" I replay calmly: "I would like to pay you the tea and leave, I am in a rush." After 5 more min she came with our soups. "The food will come but not sure when", she said. I remind her that all I wanted was to pay my tea and go. She took the soups and came back with one of our orders. She said she will charge me the order that was ready and the tea. I didn't argue. Paid and left without the soup and with a shameful portion of sushi. Of course she charge me full price for the sushi combo! 1-I don't think the customers need to know the waitress had a long day! 2-On top of it sushi wasn't as good as I expected. I would say it was 2 out of 10. Honestly VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. You couldn't keep up with a fast pace day? Well, it happens. So bite the bullet, lose the sale but at least turn an unhappy customer into a happy one with some complimentary Tea! It's not that expensive! read more
