Ordered the lobster roll and I think it was shrimp tempura, miso soup, chicken katsu and green tea. Not like a typical sushi place to me. I had veg lake St. Louis roll which wasn't bad. Green tea, red bean ice cream and the mochi was not bad or overly chewy. I had sparkling saki and I did notice it is a " regular serving place" meaning more attention to patrons that are regulars. Which is good but since moving in the area I was looking for a place to be a regular as well. Can't say I'll be back. Safe to say this is my favorite sushi spot. I don't like crazy saucy rolls so I ask to leave out any teriyaki sauce. I love their Kama with some lemon and soy sauce. They never overcook it and so far always on point. I usually order spider roll or Jurassic park roll without the teriyaki sauce or eel sauce. Always fantastic, have never had a bad experience. They have almost loosened up, but still not back to exactly how they were before the pandemic. For awhile they bounced around w/waitstaff, fortunately they have been able to hang onto the one server guy who is very good he's friendly and efficient, he's a keeper. The original owners, the taisho and his wife, have sold to the younger itamae that was with him for years. We hope he maintains the same level of care that the original owners did. Came for a Friday lunch I ordered the lunch plate with shrimp tempura & a California roll (lunch dishes come with salad and soup) and a caterpillar roll Pros: -The service. The waiter was very friendly, helpful, and efficient -The food was really good! I really enjoyed the sushi roll, it was very fresh. I added spicy Mayo to my rolls Cons: -The paper plates & plastic utensils. It made it very hard to eat the sushi in one piece because the rice kept sticking to the plate. We went to Sushi Sen for dinner and it was a great experience. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and fun the whole time. The quality of the food was better than we were expecting and will definitely bring us. Everything was very fresh. We loved everything we tried but the yellowtail nigiri was probably a favorite from both of us. Finally! A sushi restaurant that has reopened their dining room during the pandemic. I applaud them for making it work. And to the patrons who were following the guidelines. The staff was doing a great job. This was actually my first visit to Sushi Sen. I ordered the gyoza to munch on while we awaited the big show (we may have slightly over ordered for the two of us!). The gyoza were nice and crispy, the filling had good flavor. I wouldn't hesitate to order them again. Now to the rolls, in no particular order. Vegas, Fuji, Philly (fried), Crispy, Lake St Louis. I think the LSL rolls gets my vote for favorite of the day. Is it the avocado? The spicy mayo? Don't get me wrong, they were all really tasty. One thing, I didn't care too much for the texture of the cooked salmon in the Vegas and the cooked tuna in the Fuji, but I still enjoyed them. Sushi Sen is the most authentic sushi restaurant in STL. The owner is the only remaining Japanese trained sushi chef in STL. For those who don't know what that means, google what their training consists of. In the US, they'd be a physician. He goes to the airport daily to select his product. I can attest that this is the best sushi I have had since being stationed in Sasebo, Japan. You may only get this quality at a very high-end West Coast establishment unless you venture to Japan! read more

Disregard all the bad reviews for 'bad' hours - who rates a place on their hours anyways??? Look up the hours and if they're open, go get some amazing . With that said, my wife and I have been all over St. Louis and we can easily say Sushi Sen is the best in the city. We don't like paying for low quality food and we only go out to eat a few times a month, but we are happy to drive the 30+ minutes to eat some delicious sushi. Zero stars if possible. Service was horrible. Took 30 minutes for miso soup. Our sushi was mistakenly given to one of their "regular" customers. After about an hour our server finally came over to explain the situation, and told us we could wait another 15-20 minutes for our food. We said no thank you and they could care less. I love to stop for lunch here after hitting the Lake St. Louis Farmers Market (it's the best!). Kenji serves the best sushi this side of the river and is also absolutely on par with the more upscale STL sushi restaurants as well. He honed his skills for years at the legendary Tachibana, before moving out West and opening his own place - Sushi Sen. He sources the freshest, quality sushi and it shows. The salmon is like buttah and the "white tuna" (Escolar), melts in your mouth. If you miss the Jurassic Park II roll from Tachibana, you're in luck, because Kenji invented that roll and renamed it the Lake St.Louis Roll; It's one of my favorites. I tried the soft tofu salad today and it was a huge portion and included lots of big squares of tofu, shredded surimi and carrots and a delicious homemade ginger sesame dressing with a splash of chili oil. Seriously delicious and a bargain at under $6. I've never had a problem with the service here. My soda was never empty and my food came out quickly. And, you know it's a good sign when the place fills up for lunch on a Saturday and every table is filled with Asians (except for me)! Kenji still has the magic touch! read more

This place is decent and a good value. This place is good. The gyoza is delicious as was the miso soup. I didn't really love the salad, not too exciting. The combo plate is a good deal. Lots of food for 20 bucks. I traded my crunchy roll for my wife's California roll, as the Cali roll was better. The Sashimi seemed decently fresh (as far as sushi in stl goes) the beef teriyaki was cold, but would've been good if it was hot. And the fried Panko chicken was delicious. This place is worth the try, it it won't blow you away sushi was like some of the other sushi restaurants around the area. This is hands down the best sushi restaurant in St. Louis. Kenji-san used to be the head chef at Tachibana in Creve Couer and truly is the best Sushi chef in the state of Missouri. The place is small and a little quiet, but they are expanding in the new future, doubling the size of the restaurant. If money is not an issue, I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar and asking Kenji for his own personal selection for Nigiri. His technique and skill and knowledge of fish is incomparable. Otherwise, his chirashi bowl is a great deal and gives you a lot of variety. I typically don't like rolls, especially the Americanized ones (anything with cream cheese), but the 2 rolls that I get here every time are the Lake St Louis Roll and the Lobster roll. They're a little more expensive but they are definitely worth it. I don't live in St. Louis anymore, but when I visit in the future, I will definitely be coming here every time. read more

I'm going to start off by saying this. It is decent sushi for out here in the middle of the midwest. There are a couple of places that I prefer in St. Louis a little more, but this one is good for the most part for out in this area. The sushi itself is alright. It's not the greatest sushi, but it's hard to compare when I've had sushi and could see the ocean outside the restaurant window. Seriously though, the sushi is overall good and I enjoy it. Unfortunately, I always order to-go. It is near where I work so easy to stop by after I get off to get a bite to eat and that is where I run into issues. Every time I have gone in there it takes forever to order. There is no one at the front all the time, thus making it hard for me to flag someone down to turn in my little sheet. Then when I do, they tell me one time and I have to add 20-30 minutes onto that. There was one time I literally watched my appetizer sit on the counter for 10 minutes getting cold instead of being boxed up properly. My entire meal actually sat one time for a number of minutes before someone finally brought it over to me. The lack of attention is why this place gets 3-stars instead of the four I was planning on giving it. The food isn't bad. It's the to-go service that sucks and makes this place not worth it. read more

I spent close to $70 at lunch to have my food brought out on paper plates and my drinks to be served in plastic and Styrofoam cups. Set at a booth that had duck tape to cover the rips in it. This place still thinks it's in Covid lockdown with all the staff wearing mask and everything comes out on disposable plateware and plasticware. I struggled to get my sushi off the plate due to the fact the rice was sticking to the paper plate. If you're looking for a nice place to have lunch or dinner this is not it. I've been to Sushi Sen several times and have always enjoyed their regular menu, but I'd like to take a moment and highlight how lucky Lake St. Louis is to have Chef Kenji. The Non-Profit I volunteer with hosted our annual Japanese New Year's event here. Chef Kenji delivered o-sechi ryori (traditional Japanese new year's meals) to our entire group of 65, in addition to delicious sake, ozoni (new year's soup), tempura shrimp & vegetables, and grilled salmon. The native Japanese in the room were delighted to have an authentic Japanese meal (a rarity in St. Louis and even the Midwest!) and the Midwesterners thoroughly enjoyed a new and adventurous type of cuisine. Although this was a private event, it really speaks to the quality and authenticity of Sushi Sen's offering. I highly recommend this place for an affordable and native Japanese-approved meal. It's a bit far away from me but always worth the drive. (My regular menu recommendations are the Tempura Udon and the Chirashi Sushi!) read more
