They charge an auto 20% connivence fee. Pretty steep for a place where the waitresses and chefs seem to really dislike their jobs. We went for a birthday and called ahead to reserve. They sat our 7-person party at the back, in which the birthday girl was in a wheelchair and the cooks were getting annoyed that they had to push their food carts around the handles. While they initially rushed us coming in it took over 30 minutes for the chef to come out to start cooking. Food, the "Miso" soup was the worst I've ever had. It was pasta water with a single dried mushroom. Straight up macaroni water and no flavor. The ginger salad was hugely overpowered with onions. The food was okay, but the place was falling apart with the tables separating from grill. The only positive was that the drinks were good. Pretty run down for the middle of St. Charles. Never again. They share a parking lot with several other businesses. When you go in the Summer, It's really hot. Their A/C can't keep up. The decor seems dated and some of the chairs have splits in them There seems to be a lack of cohesion with staff. The staff seemed to not know what the other was doing. I had to ask several times for things like napkins, silverware, etc., and the server would say "OK" and then never brought them. I finally got up and went to the server station and got it myself. They try to fill the seating in the grill area so you may have to wait once you're seated for more people to be seated. They like to have all eight seats filled. They first brought out a hot soup and it was not me so but some type of beef broth. I don't eat beef products so I can't comment. Then they serve you a small green lettuce salad with ginger dressing. It was subpar. Our chef came out and started preparing our food. If you have allergies, be aware they make everything together on one grill. The chef was personable and tried to entertain us with all the usual grill tricks. The teriyaki salmon was average. I really wanted to like this place, especially since it was my birthday, but I was quite disappointed. read more

Okay lol upon coming to this place I didn't know you need reservations But when arriving it made all the sense in the world they literally only have 4 yes FOUR cooking tables inside of this place They originally told us 10:min wait which Turned to a :40 min wait once we got seated they made us wait on anyone else that was going to walk in to start on our table... but that's not the kicker lol after waiting :40 mins the cook throws the rice on the table and walks off after only 2 mins the server has to come and tell us "he's waiting on the grill to heat up!" lol bay bayyyy I should've just walked out right then but noooooo I had to ask for a drink once I got the drink which was a Mai tai when I tell you I haven't drank alcohol like that in 2 years and this is coming from someone that knows there whiskey and drinks stronger drinks but again 2 years on the wagon the drink they served tasted like pure water downed pineapple juice and orange juice!!! My husband and I LOVE hibachi and we were happy to find this place. The filet was delicious and tender. Shrimp was really good and so was the chicken! I wish they didn't chop up their chicken so much but it was still tasty. The service was great. The restaurant itself is pretty small and gets pretty warm with all the grills. We loved the sauces that they give as well. We will be coming again. read more

Food was very good especially the steak was one of the better hibachi style ones I have had. Everything was pretty solid food wise, maybe a bit too salty and too many sesame seeds but that is me reaching. The restaurant however felt slightly dirty and very hot. They also charged a 5% "connivence fee" for us using a card before we even told them we were gonna use card. They also had a 10% food tax which I do not believe is standard for st Charles county. This on top of the fact their website had all lower prices was pretty frustrating. I would return for the food again but I am not in a huge rush. read more

Came here for my birthday dinner. Location is in a strip mall . Small dainty hole in the wall . They only had one chef so we had to go on first come first serve even with a reservation. Chef was very good but very quick. Gave a good show and had a great attitude. Server did as well. Food was good hot and plentiful . Very affordable menu. The only complaint was no air. It was so hot. Man. I hate to do this. Food- not bad., in fact the steak was excellent for a hibachi place. Waitress, was very friendly and polite. Cook- friendly, but in a hurry to cook, and get out of there. Literally, just cooked and that's it. No tricks or jokes or anything. That's cool. But here's where this place loses 2 stars. Cleanliness. Yes. I know it's a hibachi place. But dude. Vent traps above looks like they've never been cleaned. Grease and dirt everywhere. In fact the ceiling tiles are filthy and air conditioning vent were disgusting. I'm really surprised that the health inspector hasn't shut them down. And that's just what I saw. If they are that blatantly dirty in the customer dining area, can you image the filth in the kitchen? Just absolutely unacceptable. Clean up your restaurant, and until then, I will never step foot inside your establishment again. read more

Horrible experience. We arrived at 8p. There were 4 of us and were done with soup and salad at 8:30, then they bring another couple, so we wait Another 15 minutes! So 45 minutes after arriving and they are not cooking yet. Finally they begin cooking, and the cook was horrible. He didn't do anything. No entertainment. 15 min later dinner is done and cook left. Some co-workers and ex-coworkers of mine formed a happy hour/dining family that get together once in awhile. We always try new places and tonight the pick was Shoguns in St. Charles . I have been to Shoguns at their other locations in So. County &Fairview Heights. Now I am not sure if all are owned by the same people or if this one is independently owned. The reason why I singled the St. Charles location as possibly being independent is because there are significant differences here that the other two do not have. Pros: Portion sizes are huge. I ordered the combo of Filet Mignon & scallops w/ a ala carte of Teriyaki chicken. At the other two (and generally any Teppanyaki style place) you dont seem to get the full portion of your meat if others have ordered similar items at your table but that is not the case here. My plate was huge!! Salad dressing was delish! & The yellow mustardy sauce was good also. Cons: There are quite a few but I'll just review what stood out to me. The decor...so outdated and the place is really small. My Teriyaki chicken was made with dark meat!!! I know that is not a huge deal but, to me typically these places (at least all the ones I have visited) use white meat in their chicken dishes (which is my absolute chicken preference)and for the price I paid tonight?..sorry I expected it to be more high end than what i received. When the Teppanyaki Chef begun to cook the Filets he asked other people at our table what temperature they preferred for their steak. These individuals were NOT with my party. When he gets to me...before I can begin to speak he interrupts me and says "Oh, I already know how you want yours" in a somewhat dismissive manner. *Pauses, raise 1 brow* Oh really? This offended me greatly but instead of getting upset, *Breathe in, breathe out* I polightly asked him "And how is that"? He respondes "well done right"?. Umm how about NO SIR!!!!! There aren't a lot of decent teppanyaki restaurants around st. louis. And I'll have to say, out of the ones we do have, this is by far my favorite. It's truly a tiny place but dont let that fool you. They are a force to be reconed with! The chef we had was what sealed the deal for me. We got everything from the onion volcano, to the tossing the shrimp in the mouth. I was the lucky one that actually got to catch the shrimp as it was sailing through the air into my chompers. Is it just me or does catching food in your mouth make it that much more enjoyable? I think that's a fact. Food being thrown into your mouth tastes way better than just putting it in with utensils. I think what the Japanese are really trying to say is that eastern flying food is superior to western food that sits on a plate all boring just like your grandparents TV shows. I don't know what I'm getting at so I'll get back to the food. It was delicious. The end. Oh but this IS a little bit pricier than I expected. While you sit around the table with a handful of other people drinking and laughing, a chef stands behind a scalding hot grill only inches away from you and puts on a show that reminds me of Mallory Square at sundown.The chef is flipping fire and rice, cracking jokes and eggs, and yes, even creating an edible volcano right before your eyes. After all that, you can eat...and it is delicious. It's not expensive, but it is difficult to get a reservation on Saturday night, so call early in the week. Everyone is so nice, and it really is a fun time....just watch out for those eggs! read more

Steak was cooked exactly the way I wanted (medium rare). Shrimp had a lot of flavor and taste was excellent. .....comes with Fried rice, noodles, vegetables, soup and ginger dressing salad (I would drink this dressing if I can- yummy) Our chef and our server were very friendly. Whenever I ran out of sauce condiments, they were very attentive. They have a full bar as well. I recommend their cocktails. Craving for Shogun just talking about it.... :) read more

Requested water, lipstick on glass 3. Chef was chewing gum while preparing food at table (at this moment I wanted to commit homicide) 4. He had a couple at the table whom he knew and gave most of the food to them. (Didn't even serve another couple her vegetables which she had to request and had to be brought from kitchen) 5. He was very sloppy in serving each plate. 6. Rice was overpowered with soy sauce and made it bitter to taste 7. Same with chicken 8. Because he served his friends the most meat, one of the ppl sitting with us got 70% mushroom 30% chicken The good thing about life is that it's on a trial and error basis, and I will never go back to that place again. I walk in to have a nice dinner with my boyfriend and our friends. We've been here before and it was generally inexpensive. Boyfriend and I order teriyaki chicken with rice to share between the both of us, mentioning multiple times that we wanted to share it. We eat, the chef does his tricks and the drink girls were on their a game. We get the check and it is $40. How does sharing a $14 meal turn into $40? We go to speak to the manager and he is incredibly rude and refuses to give us any money off. The fight continues and we only get $5 off the meal. He also asked if we told the chef or the wait staff about us sharing the meal, in any other restaurant the waiter would relay to the chef about this but apparently not here, the waiter was also in too much of a rush to even listen to anyone anyways. People at the grill around us also told the manager that we said "SHARE" in our order but the manager couldn't give a damn less about his customers. If I could give zero stars I would, I have to pay because the of the waiters incompetency. read more

My family and I love eating here and visit regularly. Our little family of 4 usually spends $100 or more. We came in for dinner on a Sunday evening at 8 o'clock meeting another family. After looking online, the site says it closes at 9. We arrived and the host asked us how many we had and then walked us through the curtain. Then, one of the other employees came and told us the were closed,despite the sign on the door and the hours on their website. So they turned down our party of 8. Disappointed, we took our business down the road to Kyoto where they were happy for our business. Sorry Shogun. We won't be back. read more

This place isn't too bad. The food was okay. This place is in a strip mall so there are no windows in the seating area and it is very dark inside. It's also really cramped. They have 6 hibachi tables. The tables are cramped together so that there is only enough room for one person to be walking down the center aisle. The chefs can hardly roll their food carts around. Despite having the regular vent above the grills, the air was really heavy. There really needs to be additional ventilation. Our chef was nice and friendly. He put on a fast but entertaining show. The food is typical Americanized-Asian food. Teriaki everything. I had the Mahi Mahi, which was good. My husband had the steak and shrimp. They put too much horseradish in the rice. The plates were all plastic and didn't match. Some of them even had the name from a different restaurant on it. Our bill was $45. The tip is traditionally shared between the chef and waiter. So I gave them over 20%. The total was $58. The service was good. Overall, if you want okay hibachi, this isn't a bad place. But if you are going to spend that much on hibachi, you might as well go to Kobe Steak House of Japan at Westport Plaza near the Funny Bone. Kobe has better food, better atmosphere, and better chefs for the same price. read more

I don't know where these five star reviews are coming from, I certainly didn't have that kind of experience. I've done teppanyaki countless times in several cities but never has it been this bad. Let me start with my first impression: I walk in and stand patiently in the foyer. No one is at the bar or host stand. I can see into the dining room and only one table has any people around it, the rest are completely empty. I patiently wait for someone to greet me. And wait. And wait. I waited almost ten minutes before the hostess put down her phone and came from the back of the restaurant to see me. I would have walked out long ago but I was very hungry and had a serious craving for some teppanyaki. I sit down, the only person as my table. It's deathly quiet as the other table eats in silence, not talking to each other. I order the filet and shrimp combo and ask if I can get miso instead of clear sour since I'm allergic to mushrooms. I wait a bit longer and get served clear soup. The server doesn't understand when I say I requested miso and can't have clear soup. Finally the chef finally comes out and starts cooking. No talking, no patter, no showmanship that I expect with teppanyaki. I would write if off except I watched him talk and entertain the other table, throwing shrimp into the air. With the cost of the meal i expect a bit of a show. He cooks in silence, plates my food and pushes it to me. That's when I notice my silverware doesn't even include chopsticks. What kind of Japanese restaurant doesn't offer chopsticks? How as the food? The filet was actually good. The shrimp slightly overdone. The noodles served with my steak were so salty as to be inedible. The fried rice was flat and lacked any real flavor. While I was eating the check was shoved towards me. When it comes to teppanyaki restaurants, Shogun is tough to beat. This small hole in the wall is definitely hopping every day, and also serves sushi. First off, I highly recommend reservations. If you go there, you will understand. The front area is very small and most people are standing around, chatting and drinking. They have 6 tables, and at any given time I believe they have 3 chefs out on the tables. All the chefs I highly recommend, and some are better than others. You can choose your chef, but you will most likely have to wait a little longer to sit down. The food is very good. The chefs know what they are doing when it comes to entertainment and cooking food. Honestly, I'm visiting family here in MO. Thought maybe this Shogun was connected to the chain in CA. Boy was I wrong. The service was horrible. When we arrived, there was one chef, and one waitress. Granted the place was tiny, literally 6 tables, with the cook top, and maybe 12 chairs surrounding one table. Maybe it's not the waitress' fault but she didn't know much about the menu and pretty much just ignored us. I had to flag her down for everything, and if she is writing down an order, you'd think she'd write exactly what we wanted instead of having the chef do all the work. I had to ask 3 times for steamed rice, and it shouldn't have been that hard. The food wasn't that great, the scallops were under cooked and the meat was an okay quality. The soup was WAY too salty for my taste. From what it seems, this area doesn't have much to choose from Teppan wise. If you're okay with horrid service and sort of decent food, go ahead, knock yourself out. But it definitely was not worth the money. read more

Homogeneous. That's more or less how the food tasted to me at this restaurant. Before you start to think I must have had a shitty experience here, I just wanted to say it wasn't shitty, but this type of food isn't really for me. Others may like it. I was not a fan. That's not to say the service was poor or unfriendly. Quite the opposite, actually. Everyone was super nice, and the food was fast. Maybe fast is the key word here. For $20, I got a small bowl of soup, a small salad with ginger dressing (which was delicious btw), and some rice, salmon, shrimp, and veggies. I had a Sapporo beer for $4 (the smaller size, I forgot the ounces.) For the sheer quantity of food you get, it's not a bad deal, if you eat a lot of food. But I guess I'd rather have smaller portions of higher quality food for the same cost... The menu is extremely limited, in my opinion. The two friends I went with told me they recalled the place having sushi as well, but apparently they stopped serving sushi years ago. (So they have been around for a while...evidently enough people like the food here to keep coming back. And there's something to be said for that.) But yeah, I guess I wasn't really in the mood for cooked food that night and wasn't 'till after I got there that I realized I was limited to the hibachi style food. Anyway, back to what I was trying to say at the beginning. Homogeneous. EVERYthing tasted exactly the same. The salmon, shrimp, rice, veggies...I guess because the chef used the same marinade/seasoning/etc. on everything on the grill, it all just tasted the same. Kind of burnt and bitter tasting. There were two dipping sauces. A mustard-y type of sauce that was WAY too spicy for me, and some ginger sauce which tasted like a bland version of the salad dressing (which I loved btw. I ended up asking for a 2nd salad, haha.) The 'hibachi grilled' foods were all extremely greasy, by the way. Practically swimming in oil/grease, and I have a hard time digesting oily foods. If you don't have a gallbladder, I would advise against eating here unless you're on digestive enzymes. Also another thing that irked me was that they would not cook my salmon medium-rare. I guess they were concerned about food poisoning or foodborn illness? Which kind of makes me wonder about their food storage/health practices in the kitchen. Or maybe it's a local law... IDK. Either way, the longer you cook fish, the fishier it smells and tastes, and this was no exception. Even cooked at the utmost "minimum" time they were allowed, I still felt that it was overdone. I didn't want to upset my friends by telling them I did not like the food, so I just told them I couldn't eat anymore and took the leftovers home, which I then discarded. I don't think I would ever go back here. I just don't like the food they have and there's really no other option on their menu. I called here on a Saturday around 7pm and they had an hour wait for our party of 4. They put us on the list and we arrived about 10 mins early and barley had a wait. PROS: The waiter and the cook her extremely nice. The food was excellent, best hibachi I have had. When you order the filet, you get the whole 8oz filet. The protein portions were huge. My friend got the scallops and they gave him 18 big perfectly cooked scallops. CONS: Atmosphere. It isn't as nice as most hibachi grills, all are piled into one longer room. Also, the cook did not do much of a "show". No egg trick, no onion volcano and no tossing shrimp into the guest mouths. If you want great food at a very reasonable cost this is your place. read more

It had a REALLY strong wasabi flavor that I could barely stand ( I really like wasabi and it almost killed me) Looked like the chef flavored it with one of the sauces used on the table. They don't give you much of the meat that you order and rather load you up with rice, noodles and veggies. Which would be really awesome if the rice didn't burn my face off. It's really difficult to mess up a hibachi restaurant, and I've been here before, but this most recent trip really pushed it. I went with my brother and some friends on a Friday night and there was multiple birthday parties that night. I have no idea why they use a really loud snare drum to sing happy birthday to every person in the restaurant but it was really annoying. As far as the food goes, it's pretty good but not the best hibachi I've ever tasted. I had the steak and lobster dinner and it was pretty good, no real complaints. The chef had the standard tricks of the onion train and flipping shrimp into someone's mouth. Very small restaurant in need of a major overhaul. Service was slow and there was no entertainment by the table chef that we come to expect at a hibachi restaurant. Soup was extra salty as was the teriyaki chicken. The rice is made with a horseradish mustard that seemed a little overbearing. Mushrooms are mixed in with steak and chicken, which is not listed on the menu. I couldn't even eat the chicken as the flavor was not good and I don't care for dark meat.
