The best and only place to have sushi in town!…read more Allow me to pre-empt by stating that we are sushi snobs. I'm leary of eating raw fish when in small towns and will only trust recommendations. We're well traveled and have had sushi in Japan. So imagine my surprise when PG had some delectable sushi to offer. Stopped by with the family on a Monday night thinking it couldn't be very busy but I was so wrong. The inside was practically full and some were even dining al fresco. We were greeted immediately and given a table thanks to one customer who agreed to move to a smaller table. Right away, menus were handed to us and drink orders taken. No playing around here. Waters arrived in no time. The menu is expansive and has a lot to offer for all different tastes. We ordered a couple of Bento boxes, a noodle soup, some salads, tempura, and maki rolls. On my way to the rest room I passed their takeout coolers that were full of delicious looking sushi, salads, and drinks. A steady stream of takeout customers came for grab and go meals. By the time I returned to the table, food had already started arriving fast and furious. Everything was fresh and the cooked food was piping hot. The portions were very generous. We enjoyed every bite and left stuffed. The place is small but clean and there are lots of servers. Add this restaurant to a short list of sushi restaurants on my "definitely will return" list.

The atmosphere is kind of dark, but upscale. Others at our table were celebrating a birthday and another celebrating their anniversary. So, it's safe to say, this is a good place for a special occasion. I ordered the Samurai Combo that had steak, chicken and shrimp. It also comes with miso soup, a salad with their house ginger dressing, rice and mango ice cream for after. So, along comes our teppanyaki chef, Nook. He's friendly, funny and a real professional. He knows what he's doing and he does it very well. Every component he produced on that flat top was excellent. The steak was super tender and flavorful, the teriyaki chicken tasty, and the shrimp was plump and moist. The accompanying PILE of vegetables was crisp and fresh. The only downside was the rice was mushy (over steamed) and the show, while performed well, seemed somewhat "abbreviated" vs our first experience and what we've seen at other places. It should be noted that this is a rather high-end restaurant and prices reflect that. But, for those special moments in life, it's a great place to ... indulge. Service is the best. Our server, Sharon, was friendly and efficient. I hope we don't wait so long for the next visit.

A lot had changed over the past year. The inside was completely different. Re-modeled and looked nicer. I placed my order to go and was told it be 40 minutes. I was a little shocked (and slightly annoyed because they didn't seem that busy.) There were only 2 other people dining in and eating already so I was a little taken aback. I said it was fine though, the order was paid and I went to grab a coffee at Tim Horton's to pass the time. I returned to the restaurant and sat down while I waited for my food to be ready. Some minor observations; there were two younger people working along side the sushi chef. One of them a young man looked very dazed and confused. Everyone in general was very quiet. No communication what so ever. I miss the older gentleman who used to work there who had a very lively bubbly personality and always greeted you so warmly talking to you while you waited. And the wait was never that long. I'm not sure I'll return. The premium California roll seemed to be missing from my tray and after waiting as long as I did for something real simple; Sushi Star though a bit more far is really good and their staff always seem really lively and more personable.

I'd spied this place on Yelp, and as we walked to our first choice I noticed the sign, and we were like what the hell, this place is right here. What a smart decision, we enjoyed a wonderful meal with great service. Now that said there was another table of two and another of maybe three and a couple of pick up orders. We know that downtown PG is not a great place these days, but it wasn't great in the 80's when I lived here but we went downtown anyway. The noodle house is worth the trip for the food choices alone. Our choices were excellent, even the chicken wings which we make at home all the time. Our server was excellent, the food great. My only beef as that we were very clear that we did not want our three appys to come at the same time so we could enjoy each course. They of course came out within one minute of each other. Again, how tough is that on a slow night? Our main came out after we asked for it, or rather it came out after our server asked us if we were ready for it. The entire meal goes that way and we are raving about how good it is. That all said if you are looking for a meal outside of the box in PG, you can't go wrong with checking out the Zen!

He also hung around with a bunch of satyrs with erect penises, so that didn't last long. Japan had Uke Mochi who actually pulled food from her rectum--not sure why I went there. I was getting desperate, finally turning to India's Annapurna. I always prayed for the same thing, a proper high-class sushi restaurant, one that cuts their nigiri the right size, one with quality cuts of fish, the perfect texture of rice. And now we've been given a new Edo Japan. ...looks like I'm going to have to scrape the bottom of the mythological barrel. I wonder if Demeter is still taking calls. Edo Japan, reviewing their new street-view restaurant, is not what I would call bad, just pedestrian. Lazy, with just enough commitment to compete with the likes of Wendy's and Taco Bell. Sure, they may take the lofty perch and look down upon Arby's, but come on, it's Arby's, "Full stomach, empty soul." The décor is, well...not so much a restaurant, rather a cheap plastic full-scale Revell model kit of a McDonalds with some scratch-built pieces glued on. I was there with a guest and while he ordered a traditional bento box, I went for the sushi platter. Many of the cuts on my plate were misshapen. The nigiri was not attractive, and a few pieces of my tuna roll were beginning to unravel. All of this paled in comparison to the spicy scallop nigiri my friend ordered. I've mentioned in other reviews of other Japanese restaurants that a mark of laziness is the cutting of oversized sushi. Regardless if its nigiri or a roll, you should never, and I do mean never, bite halfway. It's like questioning the acting of JK Simmons; you just don't do it (I mean have you see Whiplash?). Too many places in town believe it acceptable to cut their sushi the size of a toddler's fist, and I won't stand for it. And these two scallop nigiri took the top prize...meaning they found a new low. How big were these, you wonder? Three inches. THREE FULL INCHES and I'm not rounding up. As expected, as my friend took the first bite, the top oozed out and rolled down his hand. He finished it, unwilling to admit defeat, but I could tell it was not an enjoyable experience. Was it at least a good value? I wouldn't say that either. It was fast, I'll admit, but with my gyōza appetizer, it was almost $20. I'm sure critics will scold me for reviewing a fast food joint--that I'm missing the point. How dare I rate Edo against other sushi places? It would be like comparing McDonalds to Moxis. They both serve burgers. And that could be a valid point, but sushi is a very specific cuisine, and if done right, you can make it delicious, quick, and economical. For a short time the Superstore sushi bar managed to find that balance. Some places in town come very close. Although I struggle to name a truly great sushi place, there are still ones serving decent cuts at a reasonable price. Edo is not one of those, and it has a long way to go before it measures up. Let's be honest, though, it's a fast food joint, so it doesn't care to, and never will. If I could find something to praise, I'll say that some of the rolls weren't awful--the gyōza was passable. My friend claimed the bento box was a better option, but he was also the one that had to suffer through scallop nigiri larger than Slim Pickins' brain tumor (too soon?). Beating on Edo Japan won't get me anywhere, I realize that, and it may garner some negative reactions, but the truth is the sushi landscape, given the number of selections in town, is lackluster, and this is not making things any better. Seriously, folks, I'd rather go to Fuji Japan. Food: 2/5 Service: 2.5/5 Presentation: 2/5 Value: 2/5 Recommendation: 2.25/5
