What an amazing bed and breakfast in the Canidagua area! Rooms all include a bathroom so you don't have to worry about sharing with anyone else. Super easy to get inside. There is a tv in the room - they provide you with bathrobes , snacks , there's fridges in the hallway full of pop , there's a little box on the vanity with stuff you may have forgetten. There's a basket of first aid stuff in the hallway. The workers and cook are wonderful ! The breakfast was AMAZING. I highly recommend if you are looking for a quick getaway and to enjoy the wineries! read more

Recently my wife and I spent an extended weekend in Canandaigua. We decided to stay at the Sutherland House, a lovingly restored home from 1885. Unlike the cookie cutter rooms of the typical hotel, each guest room here is unique, decorated with different antiques and amenities. In contrast to the antique 4 poster bed and traditional decoration, our room had a modern bathroom with a small shower. We also had a large jacuzzi which we enjoyed and a fireplace that we didn't try out with temperatures in the 80's. You can check out the decor and amenities of each room on their website to see which room you would like best. Note that the prices for some rooms do not include breakfast, for those who do not want to indulge, although their breakfast is something you do not want to miss. Scattered throughout the B & B are small refrigerators stocked with complimentary soft drinks and ice. There are several coffee stations with assorted K-cups and a nice selection of teas. Each day freshly baked cookies are put out. Each room has a basket of complimentary bagged snacks. Also scattered around and in the rooms are "emergency boxes" filled with things that you might need, but probably didn't bring, such as scissors, a flashlight, band-aids and batteries. As you wander the halls you will find bookcases with books to read and games to play and displays of tourist information. The grounds of the house are beautifully landscaped and you can sit in a rocking chair on the veranda, or have a picnic at the tables and chairs in the garden. For the more actively inclined, there is a woods behind the house with several walking trails. Each morning the guests would gather in the antique filled living room awaiting the start of breakfast. Breakfast was a communal affair, with all guests seated around the dining room table. Each morning Chef Nate would prepare a five star, three course breakfast. The first course would be a fruit dish such as a fruit parfait or fresh local fruit, the second, a savory dish such as Eggs Florentine or Baked Eggs (like a quiche without a crust) and the meal would conclude with a sweet dish such as crepes, a cinnamon scone, or a waffle with fresh maple syrup. Also available to nibble on were local grapes and freshly baked coffee cake, After breakfast Nate would discuss with the guests what their interests were and would provide us with recommendations on where to go, brochures and maps. While most of the wineries in the Finger Lakes are on the other lakes, there are a few in the area and Nate had passes for a discounted tasting. Lake Canandaigua is a short drive away as is Main Street in Canandaigua. Main Street is filled with interesting little shops, bakeries and cafes and you can spend the day walking from place to place. There are a few minor things about the Sutherland House that some people might find negative. The building is not handicap accessible. There are several steps going up to the main floor, and most of the rooms require a trek up a long, narrow, winding stairway. There is not daily housekeeping service. If you need somebody to pick up after you, this is probably not the place for you. There is no Innkeeper on the premises in the afternoon or evening. In the morning Nate takes care of things, but after that if you need something you have to make a call. The A/C in our room didn't work very well. Fortunately there was a ceiling fan that cooled the room off pretty well, and the floor to ceiling windows could be opened to let in the cool night air. Hopefully, they have repaired or replaced the a/c by now. All in all, if you're looking for a relaxing stay in the Finger Lakes, in a beautiful old building with a gourmet breakfast, I highly recommend the Sutherland House. read more

Very nice Bed and Breakfast!!! There was a fire place and jacuzzi tub in the room and it was very tastefully decorated. The hosts ensured there were always fresh baked goods, snacks, and sodas available and the breakfast was very good. The downside were the stairs. If you're older or have a health condition this may not be the place for you. They also request you leave your shoes in a common area which was a bit of a pain but not horrible. Phenomenal bed and breakfast. And really, breakfast doesn't fully describe it because it's a gourmet 3 course feast. We didn't know this when we booked and had morning plans with family that we later adjusted just so we could eat Faye's cooking. It's that good. We would certainly stay here again, and can't recommend them enough. Also, the themed rooms are adorable and Bob and Faye really thought of every detail to make their guests comfortable, drinks, snacks, fresh cookies and small toiletries you might have forgotten. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Sutherland House B&B, hosted by the wonderful Faye and Bob. If you're looking for weekend stay at the Finger Lakes, this is the place to go. One of their recent reviewers mentioned breakfast is an "event" here and that truly is an understatement. Faye cooks a three-course meal every morning, featuring fresh fruits, vegetables and sweets galore. My boyfriend isn't a breakfast guy but literally inhaled his dish once it was served. They also have you eat breakfast at a beautifully set table with fellow guests, though are incredibly accommodating of the current situation and ask that 1) guests where masks around the common areas, 2) only vaccinated guests eat at the table with others and 3) guests have the option to eat elsewhere if not comfortable in a public setting. I also cannot leave out the fact that Faye bakes fresh deserts and leaves them in the common area coffee bar for you to snack on throughout the day. Okay enough about the food! The house itself is beautiful and comfortable, with so many fine details. The rooms are bit tight but everything included shows that the really care - snacks, with no extra charge, or luxury soap items. They have an outdoor space that makes you feel one with nature. My boyfriend and I spent one night just drinking a bottle of wine out on their Adirondack chairs and it was lovely. The location itself is about a 5-minute drive into the town of Canandaigua, 20-30 minutes from Lake Seneca and about an hour from Watkins Glen. I wouldn't say it's the most central location but the B&B itself makes it worth it. You save money by skipping lunch because Faye & Bob's breakfast fills you up for the day. I recommend this place for a romantic getaway weekend or trip with a good friend. Thank you to Faye & Bob for the lovely stay. You both were so considerate and accommodating. At the end of May, my husband and I had the loveliest 3-day stay at the Sutherland House, which is beautiful, clean, and conveniently located. The breakfasts are AMAZING. Faye and Bob are excellent hosts, kind and helpful and generous with desserts. In no small part thanks to their hospitality, I was able to relax for the first time in literally years. (Two small children plus a pandemic does not equal self care.) We would absolutely recommend this B&B to others, and would love to return ourselves someday. read more

My husband and I stayed in October 2017 and it was our first B&B experience. We usually stay at chain hotels but the comfortable and warm stay and amazing breakfast may have converted us! The fall decorations were so cute and added to the experience and our room was so spacious and comfortable. The bed was soft and comfortable, I could have napped all weekend. We had a hot tub and it was great with the rainy fall weekend, also the fireplace kept us warm too. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better stay, Bob and Faye were so kind and welcoming and I will be wishing every morning when I eat my bowl of cereal about how I'd rather be eating the Sutherland House's amazing homemade breakfast. read more

My husband and I just returned from a two night stary at the Sutherland House where we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful time, the inn was beautiful, our hostess Fay could not have been more welcoming when we arrived. We were given a tour of the house and shown to our room, our room was beautiful, it had all the amenities your could possibly need, snack, chocolates, a refrigerator with water/ sodas, the inn also offers teas, coffees, always fresh baked cookies and candies available, I found all to be very welcoming. We were heading out to visit some breweries and Fay offered us coupons, very thoughtful,! She also made dinner reservations for us and gave us a discount coupon for dinner, she was helpful. She reminded us we would not need dessert as she always sets out a dessert for guest to enjoy around 8, and also breakfast is served at 9AM. The both mornings we had fabulous gourmet breakfast, and she was more than happy to accommodate my husbands picking eating habits. Both morning breakfast were wonderful and we also, met a few very nice staying at the inn as well. We definitely plan on another visit to the Sutherland House next Fall, we had a very memorable stay! Beautiful B & B located at the top of Canandaigua Lake. Great location for navigating the entire area. Bob and Faye have truly created a special haven for travelers. The breakfasts are gourmet. Faye is an amazing cook. And she was so accommodating to our dietary needs. There is water and snacks which are always replenished. We stayed in Henry's Haven which was a nice king bed with plenty of room to move around. The sink is in the room not the bathroom but we have seen that in other older homes; not a big deal. We are hoping to go back and stay in a jacuzzi room in the near future. Having stayed elsewhere in the Finger Lakes in the past, we will say that we will never stay anywhere else when revisiting the area. read more

I had the privilege to stay at the Sutherland house as part of a respite weekend. I have 2 special needs children at home, and never get to "turn off". It only took me a few minutes to feel relaxed, but I give that to the credit of our "hosts" Boy and Faye. This bed and breakfast is amazing! The decor is something that is impeccable, decorated for Christmas there is something to see in every corner! The room was amazing, I have some back issues, and the spa tub relaxed me so much, to the point I really wish I had one in my home! The food was amazing, Faye took my dietary restrictions into consideration and went above and beyond to adjust part of the breakfast for me. The cookies and treats....lets just say they were great! The availability of drinks, tea, coffee at every moment makes you feel very much at home. I really hope I can make this a repeat adventure for myself, and come back in the warmer weather to get the chance to walk around more. Bob...thank you so much for all the background information on the house and grounds, I love learning about things like that! You are an extremely hard worker and it shows in the upkeep of the home. Faye, your dedication to your dream of owning a bed and breakfast shows, again, your cooking/baking is out of this world and your hospitality is nothing but 5 stars! We really enjoyed our stay at Sutherland House. It is easy to get to even though it is not in town. Our hostess could not have been more gracious and she is quite a cook. Today our breakfast began with a grapefruit brûlée, homemade breads and homemade English muffins. The main event was a large Italian sausage, poached eggs nestled in a tomato sauce and a delicious potato casserole. She also had homemade cookies for the afternoon and a lovely dessert each evening. There were a number of guests staying there at the time of our visit. Our breakfasts together included pleasant exchanges and laughter. We spent a bit of time sitting in her garden which included several seating areas. This is a very comfortable B&B. read more

I just got back from a weekend at the Sutherland house. When I first arrived, I was unsure of my choice as the decor in the house is very old school country style - lots of deep greens and exposed dark wood, lace curtains, stencils, quilts, figurines and angels, etc. After I got settled in, things got better and better. Although the house is on a main road in what appears outside of town, it is perfectly located to get to the downtown area, the waterfront, and the box store part of town. The owners could not be nicer. There are delicious snacks and drinks galore everywhere and the bed was SO comfortable. Breakfast is out of this world. Many courses of homemade heaven, taking into consideration your own dietary restrictions. I told the owner what I loved and she even left me a recipe. A real gem.... read more

My wife & I booked a weekend stay at the Sutherland house for our honeymoon 10/13/17. I've noticed all these 5 star comments below are from the prior owners, Not Bob & Fay, We had a terrible experience here from start to finish. Apparently we are not your "typical guests" my wife & I have tattoos, I am a very successful tattoo artist, she also is an artist. We are Christians & good people. We were treated as if we didn't belong there; reprimanded for not going to breakfast; mind you we were never told at "check in" any details or that we had to report to Fay if we would not be attending breakfast. She also stated we caused them to "waste food". Mind you we rushed there because we found out Thursday that check in was between 3:00 & 6:00 pm. We explained that we were coming from an hour away, Fay replied with a sigh & said "we'll we'd have to wait around" making us feel uncomfortable. She also made comment about us getting married on Friday the 13th. (Nothing to do with the movie 13 is a special number & we planed a October wedding, just so happened to be Friday, but be believe in God not scary movies) Upon arrival at 7:00 pm we were greeted by Fay out on the back patio with a group of her family members, where they had to "wait around" to check us in and remained there the rest of the night. It was quite clear Fay & Bob had a few cocktails while "waiting" for us. We were given a quick tour of the family room, never told anything about breakfast or shown the dining area, Just given a key & showed to our room while we carried our own bags up a flight of spiral stairs. The next morning, Saturday 10/14/17 we were chastised for missing breakfast we were never given details about. If anyone should have been upset it should have been us at well over $200 a night. We went on with our plans in town the rest of the day, we called Fay to let her know we would not be making it to breakfast Sunday so she didn't "waste food" again. We felt very uncomfortable & didn't want to dine with them after the way we've been treated/judged. Again we were chastised, belittled & talked down to. We went back to our room late Saturday avoiding the House & negativity. We woke up early Sunday morning & packed our belongings. We also gathered all the towels & bath robes, all out trash in one bag next to the door with a empty bottle of wine next to the can. Picking up any trace we were there. We left an hour before check out leaving the key with a employee. (I recorded the room as we walked out the door just because my gut told me to) We get into town, not even 10 minuets from the Sutherland house & receive a phone call from Fay stating "we have big problems with the way the room was left" we were told we got a spot on her pillow sham & comforter, I replied with "pillow sham?" Thinking the first thing we did was take off all the rough throw pillows & fold down the comforter. Fay replied "you do know what a pillow sham is don't you" in an upset sarcastic tone. We were dumbfounded as we heard that. Then told we ruined 2 towels. We drove back to the Sutherland house after breakfast to see "the damage" the spot on the pillow sham was the size of a dime & wet. No visible spot on the comforter just a damp spot where they "cleaned the spot". The towels in fact did have a little make up on them from my wife, non oil based that will come off in the wash. I was told "it was tattoo ink" I couldn't help but to laugh telling Fay tattoos don't come off. She repeated this nonsense. Then she insinuated we were doing tattoos in the room. Now I'm offended because I am a professional & only tattoo in a sterol environment. Being on TV shows, in magazines & tattooing celebrities we are not "tattooed trash" as we were made to feel. I called them both judgmental, I was told by Bob in a yelling voice "I AM NOT I HAVE A BLACK SON IN LAW" still not sure what that has to do with tattoos, but ok Bob thanks for confirming black people are also beneath you. I told them to send the comforter, sham & towels to the cleaner & see what happens knowing we didn't do anything to the sham or comforter & I'll pay for it or replace it just to see what he'd say, he agreed & said he'd bill my card. I remember taking the pillows off the bed & never touching them again. Also within 10 minutes after we left they were able to inspect the room, every towel, every pillow & the comforter. I'd also like to add we were told "we left blood in the jacuzzi tub" my wife did use some of the red bath salts in a jar left next to the tub for us, We did not scrub or wash the tub, that I will take full responsibility for. read more
