    Poor dad.
    Geneva L.

We had to bring my dad to the ER three times in five days before he was admitted to the hospital. He had an antibiotic resistant, hospital acquired infection in his hand after having a MOHS surgery from a Sutter dermatologist in October. He had already had a course for 14 days of an oral antibiotic which ultimately failed to treat the infection. Only when his hand had swelled up to the size of a balloon and he couldn't bend his fingers did they admit him. The good news: my Dad had five days of two different IV antibiotics. He is on the mend. His primary care doctor and her colleagues from Sutter were attending physicians which was reassuring. Some of the nurses were wonderful. Hailey, Ruth, and Jessica. Several CNA's were wonderful as well. But on some shifts the care team checked in initially but never seemed to be around. Other shifts he had lots of help. The staff seems overwhelmed and burdened. Some went the extra mile but it seems like a very difficult environment to work in. The bad news: The hospital stay itself was traumatizing for my Dad at almost 87. He had some adverse reactions to the medications (painkillers) and he was clearly delirious for a few days. I'm not sure what happened one night but he apparently got angry at the nurse's station because they were very loud (this was something I noticed in the daytime) and yelled and was apparently intimidating. The next day my Dad had a bed alarm so he couldn't leave his bed. Not even move a butt cheek or it would go off! He told me he felt like he was in prison. He was not oriented to person, place, or time due to his infection and treatment and he felt trapped. I tried to reassure him and I spent many hours in the hospital but the fifth day of his hospitalization he called me at 7 am and said he thought he would die if he had to stay there one more night. He told his doctors as well and they fast tracked his medication delivery and he was released at about 8:30 that night. I heard the nurses call a family member of another patient asking them to come and sit with her because she was pulling out her IV's repeatedly, so it seems that agitation is not out of the norm here. Food: The food is terrible. I had to bring my dad soups and sandwiches because the food was dreadful. He wouldn't eat anything they provided for five days. Unfortunately every meal smelled horrible and was unpalatable. It was basically prison industrial complex food. Thick sliced industrial turkey breast, a scoop of instant mashed potatoes, wilted frozen green beans, and a slather of bright yellow gravy was repeated twice. Dessert was usually sherbet or canned fruit. Breakfast was a bagel and eggs from a carton, scrambled. What is bizarre is that he had a three day stay in the same hospital last year in the cardiac ward and he enjoyed the food. It had fresh ingredients and an appealing quality. Not sure if it was b/c a different ward or if they changed their food vendor. Care for the person: most hospitals have a whole person care approach: they will ask if a patient wants a chaplain, if they have dietary preferences, not here. Absolutely no personal approach or support is provided. Their nondenominational "chapel" is a room with chairs in it. The rooms are all doubles and you are crammed in. Dad had four roommates in five days. His half of the room was directly opposite the nurse's station and they were joking and chit chatting at a significant steady and high pitch. Then he could never see out the window because his roommate had the window view. There were two sets of care team members coming and going- like grand central station. Plus visitors, phone calls, two tvs....disorienting if you were well, let alone sick. Leaving the hospital a CNA that was transporting him at discharge popped in behind the curtain without warning when he was on the side if his bed in underwear....began twisting and lifting my dad's arthritic legs so aggressively that he was getting hurt. I essentially pushed her aside and dressed him myself. Then she argued with me about what floor I was parked on. A bizarre end to a challenging stay. My dad said he felt like he was released from prison that night. He had some PTSD from being in this hospital this time. He is on the mend. We are grateful for the treatment he received. But the environment of the hospital was so challenging that my Dad said he wants to go to Mercy hospital on J St. if he ever needs care. The nursing staff and care environment, whole person approach is caring and calm there. A bonus is the food is fabulous and made from scratch in-house. If he has to go to Sutter Hospital again he said he would prefer to die. I have visited folks in a number of hospitals over the years, and I can say this stay was one of the most chilling and negative experiences ever from ER to discharge. I'm a Sutter patient and I'd be terrified to go to this hospital as a patient...

Came to the Sutter Medical Birth Center to visit a relative that just gave birth to a new bundle of joy! This location is new, very clean and modern. The parking situation is a private structure across the street, park and use a pedestrian bridge to cross over. Once you enter the hospital, you are immediately met by security where you need to show ID and have your photo taken. I find this extra step normal and necessary. The care of the staff seemed attentive when nurses came in to check on the baby. They were informative as well, giving advice and always asking if we needed anything, I have visited this place before when it first opened years ago and was very impressed then as well. The private rooms are spacious and the newest high tech in a hospital I've ever seen. I came late in the day so the gift shop was already closed. I did bring my own flowers and balloons to make the occasion extra special. There were no complications at all for her delivery. If you are thinking about which hospital to give birth, its seems the care and expertise at the Sutter Medical Birth Center would be the perfect choice.

The ambiance was clean. All of the staff that I encountered were professional and helpful. Labor and Delivery department: The nurses had great bedside manners and checked on my family member regularly. When the assigned nurse was caught up with another patient, they had someone to cover and assist right away. They even had an extra "floater nurse" that helped out. My family member didn't like the hospitals food and appeared irritable at times but I think the team did well despite of.

The days of Sutter being a superior care facility have gone by the wayside. The care providers are top notch. Most of the supporting staff is excellent. There are a few exceptions. Much of the wait areas, hospital floor and exam areas are deficient. I won't drone on about the miserable ER. A true blemish. Sutter over time has focused on expanding their footprint and obviously executive compensation over the facilities and the customer experience. I'm not a fan.

This hospital sucks. Not only is the staff unprofessional you have to wait in line for at least 15/20 minutes just to get thru the security check point to visit a loved one . They have one person working when there's 8 people in line waiting to get in . How ridiculous is that? Hire more people to allow guest to visit their family !

5/5/2023 Update: I am so grateful and appreciative of the nursing staff.. I was here last Sunday visiting my exMother in law- Last night, my youngest son was with her as she took her last breath.. He was very close with her.. she was truly the best "Yin Yin"- and MIL.. The night nurse saw my son daily and was so compassionate .. Thank you Sutter for helping us through another sad good-bye to our family member. *my son realized the empathy of the nurses and now he'll be changing his medical provider to Sutter!

Safe places to stay in the area?

If I go to er where can I park for free?

Not sure. Only hospital (for pay) garage and metered parking within blocks of hospital.

Does anyone know how much is parking per day? Im getting induced on monday and idk how long i could expect to be there.

No more than 15/day. However if you leave in the evening (not sure of the time) it's complimentary. I would ask when you go into OB, they may comp you. That's happened with us before.

Does anyone know whether or not you have to pay for parking when visiting/picking up a patient?

    Yes you do.

Most doctors send a message to the back office in hopes that they will work on something and get it done when you can, often times the front office will get calls following up on those messages, following up on those items and the patient falls to the wayside. It is really nice and refreshing to know there's a doctor out there that is caring for their patients. Kaiser got a facelift. It still has a bit of remodeling going on but what a nice look. I have been…read morecoming to this location as well as others for many years. I have never had to wait for the pharmacy for an astronomical amount of time as I have in other locations. This location is high volume office visits but kept very very clean. Bathrooms are always fully stocked. I do recommend if using this lab you make an appt because it does seem to be busier than any other. Their system is a lot more streamline since the tech is who gets your info instead of a counter. They changed check in for the appt upstairs to the main lobby down which can be a bit inconvenient for elderly if they come in the opposite far doors. My 101 year old grandma has had excellent care for as long as I can remember. I do take 1 star because other than our doctors he employees are mostly business not too personal even though they see us pretty often.

This location seems to serve a wide variety of patients, so I typically only come here for pediatrics for my son or women's health for myself. Unfortunately, my experiences here have been pretty inconsistent. Parking is one of my frustrations. There are several parking spots available, but the areas closest to the departments I need always feel overcrowded and difficult to manuever due to tight paths. It can already start your visit off on a stressful note searching for parking. Service here is very hit-or-miss. A few months ago, I brought my son in for his middle school immunizations, and everything went smoothly. The staff was friendly, efficient, and we really appreciated how easy that visit was. However, our most recent visit on Tuesday, February 17th was a completely different experience. We checked in right on time at noon at Suite 1C on the first floor and were told to head up to the second floor. Once we got there at the instructed room (214?), there was a sign on the door asking patients to wait and please do not knock so as not to disturb others. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes, which thankfully we could accommodate that day, but it still felt like a long time given that we had an appointment. When we were finally seen, the staff member confirmed my son's information and what shots he needed, including his COVID booster. She asked if he wanted both shots in one arm or one in each arm, and he chose one per arm. What happened next was honestly concerning. She administered both shots very quickly--which would have been fine--but then placed the bandages after the fact without properly aligning them with the injection sites. She put a bandage on each arm, but not where the shots were actually given. I quickly noticed that both injection sites were still bleeding because the bandages were misplaced. While she was putting away supplies, I had to put on new bandages myself. As a parent, that really didn't sit well with me. I understand efficiency, but basic care and attention to detail--especially when it comes to preventing infection--should not be overlooked. My son also noticed the error and found it unprofessional as well. The appointment felt rushed from start to finish, especially after already waiting a significant amount of time. I didn't say anything in the moment because we just wanted to leave, but it's something worth noting for anyone visiting this location. Based on my experiences, I would definitely choose the Fair Oaks location instead but unfortunately, for my son, we have to come to this location for Pediatrics.

When I decided to get on methadone it was with a fellow user and old timer to boot. Being new to…read moreSacramento I had no idea which clinics were good and which were subpar and because this would be my first go on methadone as a treatment tool to battle my heroin addiction, I wanted to give myself the best possible chance at making a real go of it. Kicking was never the problem- highly, highly and did I mention highly, UNPLEASANT but I can be disciplined when I need to be and whenever my addiction was starting to really mess with my life and I could only scrounge up enough money to keep me from getting sick, I would go cold turkey. Problem was 6-8 months down the line I'd inevitably run into someone and think 'oh I can just chip a little on occasions'. Therefore I needed to try something different and methadone seemed like the best bet. I started on methadone 7 years ago and have been clean off heroin 6 years now and I strongly believe that had to do with the level of care I received from CORE. The old timer who helped guide me had been to every clinic in Sacramento and said CORE was the best. It wasn't easy in the beginning because I was homeless and staying near the freeway at Auburn and Watt so it was difficult to get my butt down there. Once I found myself riding back and forth on the blue line from end to end until it was too late to get my daily dose. I had chosen to decrease my heroin while I increased my methadone- seemed to make sense and it did work but in the beginning I was still sometimes getting high off the heroin which is why I kept nodding out back and forth on the train. By the time I reached my current dose, I was mostly done with the drug but it's a wicked little worm. Eventually I moved to midtown to be closer to the clinic and then eventually got into housing and would take medical transportation, a free service for people on medi-cal and on Sundays I always rode with another old timer, but she was an og as well and all the sudden started giving me pieces of heroin for free...until it wasn't free no more. Classic tale, but the thing is you don't really get that punch from heroin when you're on methadone...sure you get a little buzz but not enough to make it worth paying for it, in my opinion. After that foray, I never did it again. I don't crave it either like I did when I kicked cold turkey. Can you get high off methadone? Yes. There are people who abuse the drug just like everything else but it never even occurred to me until I moved to a new spot recently and my roommate had developed quite the little habit of methadone. That's one big perk about CORE because of its location they don't allow people to mingle or hang out in front of the clinic which is where most of the drug dealing gets done at other clinics. Also my experience with the counselors has been stellar. I was with my first counselor up until like 6 months ago (she was offered a better position at another clinic) and she was my family for all those years, in fact the years I was on the street, she was my emergency contact! Sure CORE's not perfect- I've had issues here and there but I can honestly say that if I hadn't found CORE when I did, I'd most definitely be dead. With humility, thanks CORE for saving my life...or rather giving me a reason to save it myself.
