I was a little traumatized to have to go to the hospital because I had the worst experience with my son at their maternity center. However, I was admitted for 2 days at the medical center and had the complete opposite experience. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. I felt heard by all the nurses and doctors. They really went above and beyond to try to figure out what was going on running every test, scan or lab possible. I didn't feel dismissed at all, I left feeling waaaay better than I was before. With the proper discharge instructions and referrals I know I will have a positive recovery on the way. Thank you to, Simrit Sodhi, MD she was extremely reassuring and looking out for my best interest. She referred me to one of the best that could help me. I also appreciate David Jones, PA & Brad Auwinger DO, for taking my medical issues seriously and making sure nothing went unnoticed. Thank you to my attending provider John Zhong and Michael Bunuan, DO , Henry M Andoh, MD, Wilson A Chavez, MD, Daniel Ichel, MD for their help as well! Thank you to Garrick J Biddle, MD and Vicky B, CRT for performing my spinal injection smoothly with a mix of good laughs and education. I was extremely nervous but I couldn't feel a thing. Resident Physician, Connor Graham, great man full of jokes that I almost forgot I was at the hospital. All my RN's were fantastic: Sarah X, Ralph T, Thien N, Mitchell M, Stephanie C, Alex A, Karen H, Cecelia C, Rebecca P, Chloe M, Kinikia H, thank you for taking care of me. Physical Therapist, Marie Eustaquio and Galina Uskova, CNA, Guadalupe W, CNA all had such warming spirits. Thank you Anika, Student Nurse for wheeling me to my car and making sure I made it out safely. To the man who tried to assist me with getting my dimple jewelry out for MRI I appreciate you for trying lol now the lady you brought to try to help who had an attitude. I understand her reasoning she's witnessed patients biting someone's finger but she could have respectfully declined instead of bringing her attitude our way. We still had a good laugh and convo afterwards so that's all that matters. For those whose names I couldn't find in my care notes & wheeled me around or had to struggle with my veins for blood draws I appreciate you all as well. I had to get a lot of labs done and I loved the fact that they doubled check the amount of blood needed before taking it. Little attention to detail like that doesn't go unnoticed. They made calls to confirm, took priority samples first and split everything up so I wasn't left weak. Everyone I came across during my two day stay at the hospital was truly amazing, except Mrs. Attitude, thank you for providing me some relief and getting me back home to my family. read more

Maternity care. I'm extremely upset that a botched epidural has caused me so much ongoing pain. 4 days postpartum I was back in the ER waiting 6 hours plus additional time, to get a blood patch. This did not occur with my first kid that I had at Kaiser! The original anesthesiologist was an older woman. She seems frustrated and couldn't get her hands still. She got upset after I told her the needle wasn't placed right. At this point she kept asking where do you feel it and get jamming it in more. This almost caused me to pass out. She was very rude and not helpful. I knew she messed up at that very moment. When she entered the room she didn't have any bedside manner. I expect anesthesiologist who is giving an epidural to be cordial... Now 6 months later after having my baby.. I'm constantly in pain and having severe neck and shoulder pain. I'm just being told to get another blood patch. Staff needs to be better trained. Another woman was in the ER with me for the same reason. So this is definitely a Sutter issue. read more

We had to bring my dad to the ER three times in five days before he was admitted to the hospital. He had an antibiotic resistant, hospital acquired infection in his hand after having a MOHS surgery from a Sutter dermatologist in October. He had already had a course for 14 days of an oral antibiotic which ultimately failed to treat the infection. Only when his hand had swelled up to the size of a balloon and he couldn't bend his fingers did they admit him. The good news: my Dad had five days of two different IV antibiotics. He is on the mend. His primary care doctor and her colleagues from Sutter were attending physicians which was reassuring. Some of the nurses were wonderful. Hailey, Ruth, and Jessica. Several CNA's were wonderful as well. But on some shifts the care team checked in initially but never seemed to be around. Other shifts he had lots of help. The staff seems overwhelmed and burdened. Some went the extra mile but it seems like a very difficult environment to work in. The bad news: The hospital stay itself was traumatizing for my Dad at almost 87. He had some adverse reactions to the medications (painkillers) and he was clearly delirious for a few days. I'm not sure what happened one night but he apparently got angry at the nurse's station because they were very loud (this was something I noticed in the daytime) and yelled and was apparently intimidating. The next day my Dad had a bed alarm so he couldn't leave his bed. Not even move a butt cheek or it would go off! He told me he felt like he was in prison. He was not oriented to person, place, or time due to his infection and treatment and he felt trapped. I tried to reassure him and I spent many hours in the hospital but the fifth day of his hospitalization he called me at 7 am and said he thought he would die if he had to stay there one more night. He told his doctors as well and they fast tracked his medication delivery and he was released at about 8:30 that night. I heard the nurses call a family member of another patient asking them to come and sit with her because she was pulling out her IV's repeatedly, so it seems that agitation is not out of the norm here. Food: The food is terrible. I had to bring my dad soups and sandwiches because the food was dreadful. He wouldn't eat anything they provided for five days. Unfortunately every meal smelled horrible and was unpalatable. It was basically prison industrial complex food. Thick sliced industrial turkey breast, a scoop of instant mashed potatoes, wilted frozen green beans, and a slather of bright yellow gravy was repeated twice. Dessert was usually sherbet or canned fruit. Breakfast was a bagel and eggs from a carton, scrambled. What is bizarre is that he had a three day stay in the same hospital last year in the cardiac ward and he enjoyed the food. It had fresh ingredients and an appealing quality. Not sure if it was b/c a different ward or if they changed their food vendor. Care for the person: most hospitals have a whole person care approach: they will ask if a patient wants a chaplain, if they have dietary preferences, not here. Absolutely no personal approach or support is provided. Their nondenominational "chapel" is a room with chairs in it. The rooms are all doubles and you are crammed in. Dad had four roommates in five days. His half of the room was directly opposite the nurse's station and they were joking and chit chatting at a significant steady and high pitch. Then he could never see out the window because his roommate had the window view. There were two sets of care team members coming and going- like grand central station. Plus visitors, phone calls, two tvs....disorienting if you were well, let alone sick. Leaving the hospital a CNA that was transporting him at discharge popped in behind the curtain without warning when he was on the side if his bed in underwear....began twisting and lifting my dad's arthritic legs so aggressively that he was getting hurt. I essentially pushed her aside and dressed him myself. Then she argued with me about what floor I was parked on. A bizarre end to a challenging stay. My dad said he felt like he was released from prison that night. He had some PTSD from being in this hospital this time. He is on the mend. We are grateful for the treatment he received. But the environment of the hospital was so challenging that my Dad said he wants to go to Mercy hospital on J St. if he ever needs care. The nursing staff and care environment, whole person approach is caring and calm there. A bonus is the food is fabulous and made from scratch in-house. If he has to go to Sutter Hospital again he said he would prefer to die. I have visited folks in a number of hospitals over the years, and I can say this stay was one of the most chilling and negative experiences ever from ER to discharge. Came to the Sutter Medical Birth Center to visit a relative that just gave birth to a new bundle of joy! This location is new, very clean and modern. The parking situation is a private structure across the street, park and use a pedestrian bridge to cross over. Once you enter the hospital, you are immediately met by security where you need to show ID and have your photo taken. I find this extra step normal and necessary. The care of the staff seemed attentive when nurses came in to check on the baby. They were informative as well, giving advice and always asking if we needed anything, I have visited this place before when it first opened years ago and was very impressed then as well. The private rooms are spacious and the newest high tech in a hospital I've ever seen. I came late in the day so the gift shop was already closed. I did bring my own flowers and balloons to make the occasion extra special. There were no complications at all for her delivery. If you are thinking about which hospital to give birth, its seems the care and expertise at the Sutter Medical Birth Center would be the perfect choice. read more

I came to the ER seeking help for severe depression and significant weight loss. I explained that I felt I needed psychiatric medication and was looking for help that day. What was most frustrating was how dismissive the experience felt. At one point, a nurse told me she needed to see if the doctor was "comfortable talking to me." After waiting about 25 minutes, I was simply told to go to a mental health urgent care center the next day. I explained that I felt I needed help immediately and did not want to wait another day. Instead of feeling heard, I felt like my concerns were brushed aside. Losing a significant amount of weight in a short period of time and dealing with severe depression should be taken seriously. I understand that emergency rooms must prioritize life-threatening emergencies, but mental health struggles should not have to reach the point of self-harm before patients feel supported. I came in seeking help before reaching a crisis, and I left feeling dismissed and without the assistance I was hoping to receive. read more

The days of Sutter being a superior care facility have gone by the wayside. The care providers are top notch. Most of the supporting staff is excellent. There are a few exceptions. Much of the wait areas, hospital floor and exam areas are deficient. I won't drone on about the miserable ER. A true blemish. I had my monthly medication IV infusion yesterday, April 5, 2026, at the Sutter Downtown Center, in the Bueller building, and was taken care of by my amazing, competent, compassionate nurse Jim N.!!!Jim is the BEST nurse ever!! He is very skillful in IV insertion. I am a very hard sticker patient since I go monthly for my infusion and needs IV access, and my veins are very difficult to access due to scar tissue, given that I have been getting this treatment for years. And I have been in the hospital many times due to my cerebral aneurysm rupture problems, and surgeries leading to my vein collapse and scar tissue complications. BUT RN Jim N. has always been able to access my veins the first time and easily! I just want to applaud how Jim is an absolutely great asset to Sutter Medical & at the infusion center in downtown Sutter! Jim's Sutter Infusion colleagues are also excellent, competent & compassionate! Jim N .is just unique!!! I highly recommend Sutter Infusion staff & the facility! Came in for a pacemaker. In recovery the staff was talking, laughing and carrying on loudly while patients were trying to come out of anesthesia and sleep. 100% disrespectful to patients in such a vulnerable situation. 2nd morning the staff let me wet the bed, because I wasn't allowed to get up on my own. I told the out going and incoming nurse and neither one of them helped me change the wet pad, I got up and did it myself in my vulnerable state. Later, I was waiting for breakfast since i hadn't eaten in 2 days. When the break nurse came in she mentioned my new nurse went on breakfast break and she was standing in for her. I asked when do I get breakfast. She said what do you mean? I said I haven't eaten in 2 days and I didn't get breakfast. She was shocked and surprised. The quality of care is so poor. My aunt is diabetic with gastreoparesis and sickle cell and they took their sweet time checking her in when she clearly needed medical attention immediately. She passed out due to the pain and that was when they finally checked her in and got her vitals. After her x-ray they sent her back to the waiting room instead of getting her a room and administering meds. She passed out a total of 3 times and the third time they got her a bed in the hallway. My Sutter doctor left and I have been trying to find a "transfer of care" new provider. Although their website indicates doctors are accepting new patients, I was on the phone for over an hour and told that none of the 5 doctors I inquired about were - the excuse I got was "their website needs updating". After I did get scheduled with someone, I received the following notice: "Please note that we do not currently have any clinicians who are open to new patients and any future appointments scheduled to establish care with our team will be cancelled." THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE EMERGENCY ROOM ONLY 2825 Capitol Avenue Sacramento, CA 95816 Reception was great after that everything went downhill. I had left my wife for a few minutes to go park the car when I got back in the ER she was with a nurse (Zoie T RN) and they were having a disagreement over whether my wife had agreed to having blood drawn or not both my wife and this nurse could have handeled things better. The bottom line is the nurse being the medical Profesional should have should have de escalated instead of disagreeing and when I stated that she cut everything short and took my wife back out to the waiting room. After reading the notes that nurse Zoie put in her chart it really tells me something about her. Her notes make it sound like she was some kind of angel and only stated the part of the interaction that was good for her .After a short time another Nurse ( Keith G. RN) came out called my wifes name when I motioned it was my wife he did not respond and proceeded to sit down at the desk at the enterance to the ER. after a few minutes he got up and started opening up some meds to give to my wife without any explanation of what they were and when asked he was kinda taken back and a bit rude. In the end he did explain what they were, However the doctor had perscribed a couple of the same OTC drugs she had taken already at home only a short time before and one was a steriod which my wife does not like to take because she is diabetic and steriods raise blood sugar levels. I beleive the doctor who I believe was Dr Wagner should have had that conversation with my wife before the nurse started to give her the meds. I believe it was also Dr Wagner that in passing while this was happening stated he did not really care and was busy with two other patients. Thankfully in this instance my wifes condition turned out not being as bad as it could have been. For the past almost a year my wife has been suffering from extreme pain which to this point the doctors from three different health networks have not been able to find the underlining cause. I think the nurses and doctor at the downtown Sacramento Sutter ER should have some training on compasion. I would suggest they go to the Sutter Davis ER for that training. The final issue I had with them is in the notes of nurse Keith he stated that she left before he could have her sign a document. Whats funny about that is the last exchange between him and us was if she wasn't going to take any of the meds we were all done and nothing was stated about waiting to sign anything. read more

I've had one or two doctors who were EXCELLENT!!! But overall my personal experience recently has been non-caring doctors and nurses. Often they just aren't even listening. Once I was referred by Sutter Urgent care as see ASAP because of my symptoms. I was even given a referral slip to give to the ER nurse and Doctor. The nurses AND doctor didn't even want to look at it. I waited 5 hours just to be seen!!! Many of my friends and neighbors have STOPPED going to Sutter and are going to Mercy dignity or Mercy General (even though it further away). Sutter Medical Health in Sacramento I had a very disappointing and painful experience at this hospital. When I came in with urinary issues, the staff inserted a catheter incorrectly, which left me in severe pain all night. Instead of helping to resolve the issue or clearly explaining what was wrong, I was left feeling confused and not cared for. The next day, I had to go to another Sutter Health location (on Franklin and Post), where the staff quickly fixed the catheter and treated me with compassion. The difference in care was like night and day. What upset me most was the lack of communication. No one explained my condition clearly or told me what steps I could take to manage or fix the issue. For something as serious and personal as not being able to urinate properly, clear communication and proper care are essential. Sutter Downtown Sacramento is the best hospital I think I've ever been to in my 31 years of life. They're usually always really busy and short staffed but still happen to always go above and beyond to provide quality medical services. Bravo on whoever hired these people because I've maybe in my handful of times coming here have only encountered someone rude or off putting 1 time. My son was born here and this is the only hospital I will take him to. Very thorough with their care and I really like that the pediatric's has its own unit and space. They also have one of the best Labor & Delivery / OB / High Risk Maternity units I've ever seen. I received a call saying they wanted more information on our insurance before an upcoming appointment, this was an automated message, but they did not leave a name of the person they were calling and my wife and I both have upcoming visits. When I call back they will not say who the call was for and want our information before telling us who they want to talk to or which doctor is requesting this. They all have heavy accents and refuse to give any information that would identify them as from Sutter Health. This is not an acceptable way to do business with all the scams in the world. For medical emergencies DO NOT go to Sutter Emergency Med Center. The team is slow as snails. I've been waiting for an imaging rep to take me back for 2.5 hours, the emergency waiting room is not even busy, theirs 4 patients in total in the waiting area who may all not require special imaging. I was advised my so far 2.5 hours is not long, and that my wait could be up to 6 hours for imaging, not including see the doc for my results. I don't understand why! The waiting room is also freezing cold, due to doors constantly opening. There is no heat running, patients in the waiting area are wrapped in blankets. have been here since 2am, it is 5:20am. If you have the option to go another emergency med center, PLS DO. Sparing you the long wait. read more

I spent the last days of my moms life here at Sutter. There were ups & downs for sure with her care. I want to recognize the medical staff that really stood out for us. She was on the 4th floor (Cardio). Zach, RN - what an incredible nurse! Friendly and efficient. Very caring to my mom. Responded quickly to my moms needs. When my mom became sicker & was moved to a private room he came to check on us. Without him saying anything, I could tell we didn't have much time left and because my mom wanted to die at home I knew we were running out of time. After calling hospice, they were able to bring her home quickly. My mom died within an hour of being home. Chase, RN, was her nurse the night before she died and has a great personality and was attentive. He let me listen to my moms heart through his stethoscope. My moms final nurse was Shayla. Could not have asked for a more perfect nurse for my mom. My mom was struggling to get her dental partials in and it was super important to her. My mom always wanted to look nice and had much pride. Shayla was able somehow to get them to fit in my moms mouth- it was a challenge. Thank you Shayla for helping my mom keep her dignity in death. I was also impressed with the hospice RN (Michelle I believe) was super understanding and helped me expedite my moms trip home when I let her know my mom wanted this so badly. Room for improvement: the food trays were just dumped off with the same crap on it everyday. My mom ate none of it. I bought food for my mom. Only a handful of nurse assistants were around. I'd see a few of them hanging out chatting in the waiting area. My mom needed help and they were nowhere to be found. She would sit in her feces for much too long and had sores in that area. Shameful. Even saw her nurse checking her Facebook on her phone while at the nurses station (not on a break). Dr. Kiwan needs to work on his delivery of bad news. It was so uncaring and cold. Just a quick update for transparency. After Sutter customer service replied to my post expressing interest in speaking withe to learn more about my experience, I messaged them immediately. Weeks later and still no answer. End to end it took 8 weeks to get the "urgent" referral to a specialist processed. Then another 6 weeks to finally see someone because their doctors are so busy. Once you see the medical team they are usually wonderful. I still maintain that the changes to the Sutter referral process is broken and not focused on patient care at all. Seems to be more about controlling access and costs. read more

I pulled up today for a covid test. It's by appointment only... so as serious as it is to take your covid test, I was excited to drive up in my car and check out this quick & easy service. I was set up on the phone for this appointment and as I have said before, must people over the phone is at a call center. They are so difficult to get any information from.. however, I spoke with Fran and she was perfection. As you pull up you check in with the first man who guides you to which of 3 lines to get into. You need to have your ID and medical card ready. They also told me on the phone to wear a mask as I approached and if anyone was riding with me, they also needed to wear one. So as Arthur came over my car, he was dressed in surgical gear, covered from head to toe with a face shield, and gloves. After he verified I was me, he gently swabbed both nostrils while talking and keeping me comfortable so I didn't fear my brain was going to get stabbed. Fran was a blessing to be on the phone with and I absolutely enjoyed Arthur's time & positive attitude. He was super pleasant to pull up to. So I made several attempts to contact them in regards to my medical bills I acquired from the physical abuse from the two nurses. I had to get X-rays and injections done. And within 3 days I had a letter explaining they reviewed the case and closed it. And when I asked for the second nurses name I was told it would be sent to me in a letter and it wasn't. I've been here at Sutter Medical Center many times, either for my medical care, to my family, or to visit my friends. The Sutter Medical Center is one of the best hospitals in Sacramento. They have the best rooms and the best lobby. I believe that they have the best doctors, nurses, and the best medical equipment too. But they're also the most expensive medical facility as well. I guess the best always comes at a price! The lobby and drop-off area look like a 4 or 5 stars hotel lobby. The rooms look excellent too. This hospital looks so good sometimes I even forget about it being a hospital. The only exception is the emergency room area. It can be very crowded sometimes. But I think this is a common problem in California! Overall, I am recommending Sutter Medical Center to anyone lucky enough their insurance covers this hospital. Wow this place is slow as most Emergency rooms are at night. Lots of strange characters here. Many homeless trying to get free food and stay out of the cold. There is a lot more security than in old days which is good. Still no metal detectors like in other big cities. They limit the homeless bringing in all their stuff so that was good. So many people scamming the system. A lady was puffing away at her cigarettes and then went inside and tried to act like her lower leg was in so much pain yet she was just outside standing smoking a bunch of cigarettes. While I was standing there was a screeching van pulled up and almost hit the piler and came to a stop. The driver was screaming at the other guy to get out quickly. I thought it was a gunshot victim but it was a baby that wasn't breathing. Thank god the staff were able to get the baby breathing again. It's a little crazy down here. I was surprised that the bathroom wasn't totally dirty. With so much traffic in there. It was pretty good. read more

The pediatric unit is amazing, took my non verbal 9 year old son here because he was seen here prior and level of care is far greater than any other ER, they are accommodating understanding and very qualified for all sorts of special needs, I'm crying as I write this because how hard it is to have a scared little one unable to express his fears and they just made everything so much better than anywhere else he's been, I so appreciate the nurses and the physician that addressed all my concerns eased my fears and were brilliant and loving towards my son / I would recommend to any special needs parent read more

This post is only for the activities today between 3:00 PM and 3:15PM and it was performed by Chris The Assistant that wheeled me down from my room. He made the hospital look really bad other than that I love SUTTER HEALTH medical and my doctors and all the nurses at Sutter Health but CHRIS really has to go, Today! I was released from the hospital and Chris was the person that brought me down from room 8604. . I just had a full knee replacement and he said I had to transport to another wheelchair which is totally ridiculous. TORTURING ME/I mean how much pain do one have to experience to save your wheelchair you only have one wheelchair in the hospital And then nobody can justify why this is necessary. SUTTER HEALTH SACRAMENTO HAVE LIMITED WHEELCHAIRS.You could have taken me down with one wheelchair to my car and let me go. I HAD A FULL KNEE REPLACEMENT AND TO add insult to injury when you call the patient care they have a 12 minute message that is so INSINCERE/ It's no way the message is sincere or genuine. You are unable to an appointment with an orthopedic doctor unless you need surgery. I have a partial tear that has not healed over 3 years and the orthopedic surgeon whom has treated me for this condition refuses to see me again for consultation after an MRI he requested showed a parital tear. How about the quality of care when evaluating a partial tear in a supraspinatus tendon? I have tried to get through to the referral department both on phone and chat line... Phone, I have been on hold for over 2.0 HOURS, and no one has answered. Stayed on the phone and tried the chat line. Was number 64 in the queue. Shake my head. I was dropped from the queue somehow. Honestly my son was in the hospital here a few times over the last couple of years and each time it's disappointing. There are some great nurses and doctors there but they are far a few in-between. However the majority are uncaring and disrespectful. every day they have a new attending doctor changing medications and care instructions. Sutter E.R.without going into my trrminal disease, infusion patient 14 years. Even when busy I'm removed to the back. Also,first time I saw no doctor,wasn't spoken to,and P.A.Wolfe said nothing to me out of waiting area. I had been in a head on car crash,thrown around with huge lump on forehead,broken foot,and the guy put sire back. I never said anything about my back. I was in such shock,I just sat there. No conversation,no mention it was a car crash,no mention I had a cast on. As a nurse,I saw this arrogant P.A. look at one of the nurses rolling laptop. He looked maybe a minute,saw I had had,ann enormous surgery 2yrs.ago,47 days in the hospital,so he decided to order an mri of the lumbar spine in which six weeks earlier I had a C.T.of my spine, the 47 day one 2yrs.ago,not looking that two years before that,I had a complete laminectomy and fushion of cervical spine,19days in hospital. I was thrown all over the car,small personvwith a sear belt on. My cervical spine was already beginning to hv problems. I currently,(been exactly one year) thrown all over,hitting my head on the steering wheel with a good sized lump on my forehead, no mention.I couldn't move my neck, arm,or shoulder. Don't know if I have awas in severe pain,still can't move my left shoulder,arm. All he did in the one minute he spoke to the nurse was look at the laptop,seeing I had a failed complete sinal fushion abd laminectomy,and tailbone removal all at the same time,almost 50days in the hospital?hence a repeat lumbar mri when we already knew prior to the accident surgery was being talked about. If he read a little bit more shows the total cervical and 19days,that's what I still haven't gotten. Since it was neck,to mid back,shoulder,arm, a previous torn rotator cuff,someone who had more in 30 seconds would have taken a minute and see the lumbar was being taken care of a month earlier. So here I am,don't know if its my cervical spine,severe whiplash,a severly torn rotator cuff with arm pain. I currently am changing primary,with my disease it's hard to find one. Evidently,they think you're going to be contacting them all the time,the opposite,you are dealing with your Immunologist. I need an mri of cervical spine and rotator cuff,not going back there. Oh yep,the broken foot. So in severe pain 9 hrs when in severe pain,fake spine brain stem on down,and no tailbone,that failed duting the 47days two yrs ago. I am filing a legal complaint against them. Never saw anyone accept the kud that put my cast on,no xray,who verbally discharged me saying,come back in abt.three wks.you can leave. I was in excruiating pain. Though I've been a pain management patient ten yrs.,this P.A. offered me 7 hrs.earlier one of the regular pain pills I take at home. They could have at least put me in a wheel chair away from the germs,of course i had a mask on,you have no idea how manh weeks or months I've lived in the hospital, an i.v.with a bit of pain medication,a doctor whicj i never was examined or saw a doctor,malpractice it is.
