Aurum is a fantastic little independent jewellers in South Croydon. I remember walking past it as a…read morechild and always wanting to look in the windows at the beautiful pieces, and now as an adult I still can't resist stopping to stare in at all the beautiful things on display. Aurum is a working goldsmiths, with a little workshop out the back where they make everything, a fact which instantly makes them ten-times more appealing than the brightly lit chain jewellers you will find in the town centre, where the staff are just sales machines, rather than experts. At Aurum, they are on intimate terms with metal and precious stones, and you can go in and buy something gorgeous off the shelf, get them to remodel something you already have, or get something bespoke made, and they will be knowledgeable and helpful throughout. I've got some Aurum bits which I was given for my 18th birthday, and they are still going strong (I won't tell you exactly how many years later), my Dad has a pair of their frog cufflinks, which are still his favourites after 15 years of wearing them, and my brother has bought all manner of things from there for his wife - from those first teenage presents, to the ring he gave her on their wedding day.

It is a class above high street jewellery shops, but it is not overpriced for the quality you get and the personalised service you receive. You can buy gorgeous jewellery straight from the displays, but you they also make bespoke pieces and they will spend as long as you need advising you on the best designs, metals and stones, with no hard sell or pressure to buy. They also sell a range of high-end watches and they do repairs and cleaning. If you are looking to buy something special, I would definitely recommend popping in to Pravins - you won't be disappointed.

Ernest Jones do some lovely jewellery and my impression is that they're providing more choice at the less expensive end of the market now than they have in the past. Because the Staines branch is small there aren't many staff so you do sometimes have to wait to be served if its busy. I've made several major purchases here and have never had a problem with any of the items I bought. The service I had varied though, depending on who actually looked after me. It's worth having a look in the windows and then a browse inside if something particularly catches your eye, but if there's already someone in the shop being served you might have to come back later.

I found a Rose and Lavender candle that smelled divine. I flipped it over to look at the price and I got brought back to reality really quick - it was £4.50. OK, so I am a cheapskate, I admit, but still, I'm not into spending a fiver on a stupid candle that's going to burn into nothingness in the long run. Ignoring my reservations, I held onto it while I perused what the rest of the shop had to offer. It had cute little knick knacks of all sorts - cards, lipstick holds, keychains, purses. I took a photo of the jewellery display. Then I went to the back of the shop and found loads of overpriced ugly clothes that only a wicked witch or a sexless spinster would wear and I took a picture of them. 'Excuse me, no more pictures please!' said a woman behind the counter that I did not even recognise existed until that very moment because she did not bother to greet me when I came into the store as she was picking her cuticles and developing blisters on her buttocks from sitting on her ass for so long embracing indolence with all of her being. I was annoyed to say the least. Like seriously, why can't I take pictures? Do you have a black magic banshee kickin' it behind the trouser section or something? This shop reminds me of John Lewis on a budget, complete with Camden style strippy tights for your goth moments or years. J. Selby comes complete with a wig salon with normal coloured wigs and a magenta wig! I thought the kitchenware was really cheap and there were some pretty glasses on offer from 1.50. I want to come back here (Why can't I ever buy anything here the first time, damn North London rent) to buy this silk polka dot dress for 34.00. It's one of a dying breed, the independent department store. Upstairs, shoppers can buy sewing notions, polyester granny smocks and aprons, low end Wedgewood lines, Pyrex, and linens. A nice range of linens is offered from practical no-iron percale to sheets and pillows by Monsoon. On the ground floor, clothes are grouped into boutique-like clusters. Evans has a section, so does Monsoon, so does Top Shop. Cosmetic counters flank the front of the store, next to the wig shop and hair salon and a few sticks of furniture are sold in the basement.
