This park is located outside of the French Market. It is located on the site of the former Latrobe…read moreWaterworks, hence the name. It is very rundown and trashed. It is a hang out for Dirty Mike and the Boys. It is very small. I would say about a quarter of an acre if that. It consists of a non-working fountain and a statue. The area is highly traffic and has a lot of urban campers hanging out there. It is very dirty, but does offer some shade on a warm sunny day. There is metered street parking available on nearby streets, but why would you come here outside of you being there already for the city market of doing some sightseeing. The highlights of the park are the fountain that has benches around it and the statue, the Four Ladies Sculpture, that has 4 woman as pillars holding up a roof like structure. They occasionally have local music bands playing here, which unfortunately was not the case during my visit. I hear that it is popular though and hope to be able to check it out one day. I would probably skip or at a minimum walk briskly through this park towards another destination. It does not appear that the park is well maintained, nor has much oversight.

For a couple of years now, they've been guides for those of us who visit the area specifically to learn about the histories of the water and the land. I and so many other folks from all over the country are specifically curious about the St. Malo Settlement. These 'Manilamen' comprised the first permanent Asian settlement in the country back before Louisiana was a state. Our Bayou Barkada (Filipino & Filipino American community group) relies on Captain Jimmy and his crew to bring us onto the waterways that our collective ancestors also navigated, also fished in. He teaches us about what the area looked like generations ago and what's different now. He offers concrete information to the needs of the area so that he and his neighbors can continue to not only provide services, but to thrive by stewarding the land and waterways. To many of us, Captain Jimmy and his crew help us ask and answer questions about ourselves and connect us to each other. I booked a family Christmas present through Captain Dude. He was always pleasant on the phone, easy to talk to, and breeze to plan with. He took my brother, dad, and mom out and they seemed to have a great time. The weather was unfavorable, but they still made a decent catch. Within the package is included ice, bait, and fish cleaning. Bring your own drinks and snacks. Captain Dude set me up with a second boat who was Captain Mike. Since many of the people who live in the area do not have a ton of yardspace, many make this their defacto front yard which is fun to observe and not crash (unless invited of course). Love that the trees are lush and beautiful right now despite the cold winter...or maybe because of it. Now I just wish some neighbor with a green thumb would plant some flower beds to enhance the beauty.

I never ventured all the way down to where the fountain is, though, and therefore I never saw more than a fraction of this cute little dog-friendly park. Why three stars? Well, I'd probably give it four if I... A) Lived in the Lower Garden District B) Had a dog. C) All of the above. So, yeah, there's a fountain (who knew?) that looks really scummy and smells like wet dog when you're up close, but that's probably not a big deal if you have a dog. Even less so if you have a dog who loves water and are looking for places to let your puppyface swim. Because there were definitely dogs swimming in the fountain. It has your average number of sketchy and/or homeless looking people, but not all sprawled out on the ground, sleeping, like I've seen on weekday afternoons in Lafayette Square. Also, it apparently closes - there's a sign that says the park is closed from 10:30 pm to 6:00 am (interesting that they give you the closing time first, rather than the usual open/close times). Since I didn't realize it was such a big park, I also didn't realize it had official hours. You learn something new every day.

We booked a 2-day guided trip for four to catch redfish. We were disappointed, to say the least…read more We all know how to fish, so were not expecting a lot of help with equipment or baiting hooks. However, having fished charters in Florida, Alaska, and Hawaii, this is the first time we have ever had to compete with our guide to catch fish. Never before have we even been with a guide who actively fished, but instead took care of his guests and kept them on the fish. The Captain stood in the prime angler's spot on the front deck next to the trolling motor - he had a remote, but chose not to use it, for what ever reason. His line was always the first one in the water, and he fished virtually every new area ahead of any of those of us paying for the trip. He did, reluctantly, put his gear aside for a quick reset if one of us asked for help, or to net a fish for us. Otherwise, it was as if he was going fishing, and we just rode out on the boat with him. He never put us in any area where there was a lot of activity; we would fish a non-productive area until we would finally all sit down and wait for him to look for another spot. We did catch some fish, but not much compared to the photos on their website of other groups with their captains on those same dates. Also, he did not dress the flounder properly that we caught, and the restaurant couldn't cook it for us. The second day, we just gave him the fish we did catch; I think he caught about 5 himself, and the rest of us caught about that many. With a paid trip for four, one of us had to sit out since the Captain kept fishing ahead of us. I was offered minimal compensation not to post this review. I told the owner I would not post it if they wanted to refund 1 full day of guided fishing as we had paid for two. They declined, so here it is.

In my own warped world, 2014, like 2013 was the year of the "bad back". Having a bad back…read moredefinitely limits participation in many sports, so recognizing my limitations and in an effort to change my sedentary lifestyle, I bought a starter set of discs in April 2014 and went to the City Park Disc Golf Course. My first few visits here were "just ok", as I could not throw the discs as far as I had hoped. I also threw a few in the water, which is no fun either. The grass on the course was high and this made locating your discs somewhat of a pain if you didn't watch exactly where it landed. But I felt good about being outside and at least I was getting a little exercise as I walked the course. It's easy to gain proficiency rather quickly in this sport and I watched my score go from the 80's down to the low 60's in just 2-3 months of casual play. In the summer of 2014, the course started receiving more attention and the grass was getting cut more frequently and they installed several brand new baskets. They also started repositioning many of the baskets and eventually reversed the entire order of the course. If you haven't played in the last few months, the course layout will brand new to you, and the new layout presents more challenges. Some of the trickier holes (baskets) can be: Hole 1 - This short hole forces you to throw parallel with the water to your right and makes you go around a tree next to the shoreline. Therefore, you have to throw it out far enough to get around the tree, but high enough to make sure it gets back to the shoreline. Hole 2 - The tee box to this hole forces you to throw across the lagoon, but unless you hit the tree on the other side, there is little chance of losing a disc. Hole 3 - Unless you play it safe by going along the shoreline, this hole will force you to throw over the water into a basket on a peninsula. And yes, I have lost a few discs here. Hole 4 - Here is another hole where you can play it safe by throwing parallel to the shore as there is over 225 feet of water on your left to cross to the basket. Hole 6 - Although short, you have to throw straight or your disc will bounce between trees like a pinball. Hole 8 - Grip it and rip it as this hole is even longer than it appears. Hole 11 - Overshoot this basket on top of a hill and your disc will disappear in the brush. Hole 13 - This will test your skill at making your disc perform a right hook in order to reach the basket. Hook it too much and you are in thick brush. Hole 18 - If you want to make a par, you better be able to throw at least 225 feet straight over the water. The course has steadily improved this year, as has participation among local residents. It can be played and enjoyed by people of all ages and athletic ability and I would recommend this course to anyone. It's a fun sport that requires very little start up costs and no greens fees such as the real game of golf If you do happen to play, use a sharpie marker and write your name and phone # on all of your discs. I have had at least 5 discs returned to me by "Joe", who regularly fishes them out of the lagoon. Hope to see y'all out there.

Family, kid, and pet friendly park. For more seasoned players it's probably a real simple course, but for beginner's like me, it's tough enough without making me lose interest.
