    Onion rings

In a world where restaurants find more and more things to put onto a burger, from chili to candied bacon to foie gras to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (look it up on youtube), Sweet Ecstasy bucks the trend by making exactly one basic burger, with just 4 choices to make. That's not for lack of creativity--it's due to pride of product. Every Sweet Ecstasy burger begins with a brioche-style bun, buttered and lightly toasted. This is topped with a slice of tomato, and a lettuce leaf. Those are on the bottom. That's important, as I'll explain later. The vegetables are dressed with "Ecstasy Sauce," which for all intents and purposes is a runny Thousand Island Dressing. The only options you have for your burger are the following: 1. How many quarter pound beef patties do you want? 2. Do you want cheese? 3. How do you want your onions? 4. Do you want a bun? One patty without cheese is a hamburger. One with cheese is a cheeseburger, 2 patties make a double and come with 2 slices of cheese. Onions can come raw, grilled, or caramelized. Add 20 pesos and you can have your bun exchanged for a lettuce wrap. As far as I'm concerned, this is an illusion of choice. The correct answers are the following: 1. Usually 1. If I'm starving, 2. 2. Yes, Cheese please 3. Caramelized. It's the only choice. 4. Of course. Why would I exchange that perfect bun with lettuce? Someone used to the Mcdonald'ses and Jollibees of this world would think nothing of this setup. It's just a burger, after all. What's so special? It's the details. While there is no new component to the classic burger formula, not even bacon, each element of the archetypal burger is brought to its peak. The buttered, toasted brioche bun is soft and a little sweet, but the toasted insides can stand up to the juicy patties. The sweetness cuts the richness of the burger a little, especially the buttery taste adds another layer of flavor. The bun is assisted in its resistance to juice-related flooding by the vegetables being placed on the bottom bun. The lettuce and tomato serve as a barrier to the juice running from the patty, thus preventing the dreaded collapse of the bottom bun into a greasy pancake that sticks to the roof of your mouth. The sauce is mild in flavor in order to let beefy flavors take front and center. However, whatever spices are in the sauce still manage to shine through. As for the patties, they come cooked to medium, with a pink, juicy center and a wonderful sear on the outside. The cheese is obviously cooked on top of the burger patty rather than just laid on top during assembly. That way, it's melted without causing slippage. Finally, the (caramelized!) onions complement the sweetness of the buns, while adding umami to the entire equation. That equation adds up to one heck of a burger. I found myself nodding in approval while juices ran down my chin the first time I had it. Having reached the pinnacle of the burger arts, Sweet Ecstasy lets its hair down when it comes to sides and wings. The fries are alright, but the stars for me are the onion rings and especially the pickle fries. Both are fried in a light tempura batter. The onion rings are made of sweet soft onion and have a light, airy quality. I have to talk about the pickle fries. it sounds strange, but the tang of pickles offset against that tempura crust and dipped in ecstasy sauce is just perfect. To be frank I have yet to order anything aside from burgers and fries here. However, chicken wings and milkshakes are also on offer. Maybe I'll eventually get tired of the burger and pickle fry combo and try the wings and shakes. Probably not though. The burgers are just that good.

The next time you pass by Jupiter Street in Makati, you have to drop by Sweet Ecstasy! My brother and his friends have been raving about this place for a long time (they eat at the branch in Katipunan). I decided to go here after a long meeting and, well, I didn't want to go through the traffic going home. I ordered their Cheeseburger with caramelized onions + an "Adult Milkshake." What makes this burger special is the Bun. They use a Brioche Bun that was glistening with butter. It's the perfect vehicle to soak up all the juices from the beef patty. I was also recommended to try the Peanut Butter Jalapeno Burger. This is basically the famous Goober Burger that I see people eat online (popular in Central Missouri apparently). To go with your burger, order the Fantastic Fries or Onion Rings. Oh, if you want something different, try the Fried Pickles! Lastly, give the "Adult Milkshake" a try. I had the 'Sex Berry' because I wanted to taste how much alcohol is in it. I was a bit disappointed that there was no kick. BUT, I'll give these a second chance next time I visit. The place has few tables and chairs, so visit at a non-peak hour and day. A few friends have gone here only to be turned away because they ran out of burgers!

I was disappointed until I saw San Miguel on the menu in either mugs or pitchers. 1 pizza, 1 spaghetti, 1 bucket of mojos, 5 milkshakes, and 3 beers cost about $40 after being converted from pesos to dollars and it fed a party of 2 adults and 4 teenagers. In America all of that would have cost $60 minimum. Service sucks, but that's the norm in the Philippines. I had to remind them 3 times for a refill on beer before it actually got to me. As for food, nothing beats American pizza back home. But being a 3rd world country, the knockoff American pizza wasn't bad. I haven't been to Shakey's in America in far too long so I can't compare the international chain's pizza by country but it was edible and good enough to eat, it just wasn't great. I can say the same for the spaghetti and mojos. Highlight of the meal was the San Miguel beer, milkshake, and decor. Shakey's in America is a children's pizza parlour but Shakey's in the Philippines is a sit down restaurant with floor to ceiling glass windows that are a nice touch so you can look outside and see all the jeepneys and tricycles nearly get into accidents with each other.

July 14, was my son's birthday, we came at the store early and we noticed that the venue was not yet set and no body has turned the AC on, so immediately called the attention of the crew and asked to turn the AC on, so they did, 30 minutes had past and my guests were coming and the venue was still darn hot! I again called the crew to do something about it and they only responded, we'll have it checked. So, I let it pass and just enjoyed the party. 30 minutes before the party ended, the host approached me and asked if I wanted Jollibee (the mascot) to extend so he could hop in the tables to take pictures. I said, I don't think there's a need for that since I had booked Yum to come out. The host was surprised when I said that, so, I already got mad and walked out the venue and looked for the Supervisor. I waited 15 minutes for the manager to come out, only to tell me that they failed to book Yum for the party!! I was so mad that time. I booked 1 month prior to the event, thinking everything was already taken cared off. I had high expectations and it dropped 0 that time! I was so disappointed with the venue, with the manager and how he handled this issue. Thanks to the host.. Nathan, who had remained composed despite my ranting and still made the event fun. I hope that they have learned their lesson with this and do something about the venue.
