I have taken two classes here and am about to sign up for my third…read more My first class was Beginning Aerial Silks. I highly recommend it if you are particularly interested in Silks. If you're unsure, the Intro to Aerial Arts might be better: you do trapeze, vertical rope, and aerial silks. My teachers for Aerial Silks were Sheri and Sandra. They were fantastic. My second class was with Mackenzie and was Aerial Fitness & Cross Conditioning. This class was always fun. Mackenzie kept things fresh with a mix of stretching, strength, and cardio using the floor, trapeze, silks, and other fitness apparatuses. I am about to sign up for the Beginner Contortion class for the Fall and am really looking forward to it! The staff is friendly and all the instructors are actively honing their craft. The class sizes are small so you get what you pay for: lots of one on one attention.

Ever feel the urge to run away and join the circus? Firefly Theatre and Circus has classes in…read morecircus arts for all ages - think more Cirque du Soleil, less bearded lady. Beginners can take their Taste of the Circus taster class held on a weekend several times a year, or their Intro to Aerial Arts class, a 6-week introductory class with instruction on aerial silks, rope and static trapeze. They also offer advanced classes in the aforementioned disciplines, as well as contortion, straps, hoop, loop/hammock, handstands, aerial yoga, conditioning, and kids' classes too! Students even get a chance to perform in their annual student show, Let There Be Height. I have taken several of their classes in the past and have found the staff to all be friendly, encouraging, and safety-minded. It is an excellent upper body workout (hauling your body weight 30ft in the air while climbing the silks will do that!), but should probably be supplemented with other activities for a full-body workout. Although they have safety precautions (there are crash mats below each of the apparatuses and full warm-up and cool-downs each class), you are relying on your own strength (and nothing else - no safety harnesses) to prevent you from falling to the ground, and this part freaks out my non-circus friends routinely, so just a heads up. There have been no serious injuries here that I know of, and they have a very distinct skills progression and won't teach you anything you're not ready to learn. Classes are relatively pricey at around $30 a class if you sign up for the whole session, or $50 for their taster class, but totally worth it for the uniqueness of the workout! See you in the air!

For the most part, I love the fringe. There's loads of shows. Local artists feel well supported…read moreand empowered and its generally well organized and very well attended.... but this was the first year I brought my kids to the Kids Fringe and it was disappointing. To begin with, it wasn't organized well for ages.... there was a booklet that the kids could take around the activities to get stamped.... my 4 year old and 1 year old were too young to understand the concept and my 7 year old wasn't allowed into many of the activities because he was too old and he was bored stiff at many of the others. The fossil digging was pretty cool - everyone enjoyed this. The Box fort zone was highly anticipated.... and highly disappointing.... my front yard on trash day would be more exciting to play in. As pictured, it was a few boxes that were collapsed and largely falling apart.... there was so so much potential for this event.... but it was completely unsupported. We'll continue to support the main fringe festival, but we'll be looking for other activities for our kids.

I love everything about the fringe except the food. You can keep the disappointing 9$ Philly…read morecheesesteaks, but give me so many plays, give me terrible recommendations from artists and promoters, give me unexpected theatre gems that look like bombs from descriptions and names, give me mostly terrible merchandise to purchase with enough neat stuff to keep you looking, give me cheesy and entertaining street performers, give me costumes, racy or not, to grab your attention, give me that sea of humanity in the heart of old Strathcona. It's a whirlwind, you'll laugh, you may cry, you may wonder why it is so humid, hot or cold, you may wonder why there are so many zombie plays (much more last year!). But it's fun and is never a dull moment ... And it means summer is almost over. Enjoy it for what it is. Edmonton at its best! Just a few words of advice. I've NEVER seen an exceptional one man show and zombie show + comedy usually = entertaining. Happy fringe-ing!

Wow! All I gotta say is, Wow!…read more I have never been to a Yoga studio like this one since moving to Canada. First off, this studio is literally in the same strip mall as my daughter's dance studio - Um, yeah... Why did I not go here last year rather than sitting on a couch for 2 hours every week? So let's get the cons out of the way - It's located on the 2nd floor and there isn't a washroom in the Yoga studio but there is one in the hallway you can access with a key. It's a nice washroom and there is nothing wrong with it but I would just rather prefer a washroom inside the Yoga studio itself. Okay, on with the AWESOMEness! When you walk in the door, it's like you are walking into an beautiful and bright Indian inspired oasis with gorgeous fabrics and silks draped from the ceiling, brightly coloured walls, comfy couches and chairs and a beaded curtain leading to chagne rooms. I don't think I've ever walked in without being warmly greeted by at least one person if not two or three. There is a Sun room (hot and warm) and a Moon room (room temperature), They offer classes ranging from hot ( flow, yin, etc.) to relaxation to Hiit (yoga and interval) and many more that I haven't even tried yet. Their website breaks down each style of class offered: http://www.lahariyoga.ca/classes-description/ So far, I've gone to three of the Blissology series by instructor Michellene Kandert and have fallen madly in love with her style. First off, she's hillarious and sometimes makes us dance - yep, dance (especially on Friday night Happy Hour). She is real, supportive, and empowering - pretty much all you could ever ask for from a yoga instructor or human being! After yoga classes, you can sit and enjoy fruit/herb infused water, tea, coffee and snacks at their kitchen bar or lounge in their comfy couches in the "Om Kitchen & Lounge." If you go to a Happy Hour Friday class, there is literally a mini potluck afterwards and wine. Yep, that's right. Yoga followed by wine and treats! Does life get better than this? Me thinks not! Lahari also offers Men's only classes on their schedule (way cool) and kiddo classes as well. Definitely check out their website and live schedule to see what is coming up and give them a try! Your first class is always free - You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! Prices are comparable with all other Yoga studios in town with drop in at $10 or a punch pass of 10 classes currently for $90. They also offer monthly, three months, and yearly memberships which are the way to go if you practice 2 or more times per week! I really can't say enough great things about this place and look forward to continuing to explore this studio and the instructors here! http://www.lahariyoga.ca/
