I will write this review in the form of tips: Check in and Costs Check in is at 2 p.m., and show up early because there will be a line. Check out is at noon -- and people are prompt! Which is good, because the staff will be driving by and cleaning up ready for check in. Costs are very reasonable at about $40-$45 per night, and most sites allow up to 8 people and two cars (there is overflow parking available, about $5 for each additional car). The splash pad is open May 1 through Sept. 30 and costs $3 for the day (for those aged 1-17). You can buy a season pass for $30 per person if you plan to come more often. Bugs and Things Yes, there are a ton of ants, snails and birds here, and I heard coyotes in the campground at night. So plan accordingly. I was surprised by the number of people without campground discipline. Open drink and food containers for hours. Messy areas with trash floating in their campsites. Wide open tents. Make sure you are keeping your campsite clean. There were several tracks of ants marching through out site and also birds in the wings the entire 3-day trip for us, and we never had a problem with the insects or wildlife by keeping everything tidy and organized. Sites The campground is split into three main sections with just over 100 sites: the upper loops, with 1) one section of exposed full hookup sites and a 2) back section closer to the lake but with no lake view with full hookup sites that have a bit more vegetation, and the 3) lower loop with water and electric at most sites, which is more popular among tent campers, large groups and those with horses (there is an actual equestrian camping section in the campground. Each site has a fire ring with a grill attached along with a table. Site lengths for RVs appear to be mostly around 30' and 32' from what I have seen (but they do have some as small as 20' and as large as nearly 50'), with electric boxes (20/30/50 amps -- awesome!). And pets are allowed ($2 per)! Saw lots of well behaved pups throughout my stay. And I so appreciate that they allow tents at the hookup sites. It's always a treat to have access to water and electricity while tent camping. I found several of the lower loop sites to be far more spacious than the upper link but, still, you are crammed in and there is not a level of privacy to be expected. During my day and previous visit, the site is kept very clean by the staff and hosts. That's part of the reason I prioritized a stay. Some of the visitors however (just some) have absolutely no camping etiquette, unfortunately. Until those trees mature in the upper loop, you are going to want the lower loop if you want shade. Even then, bring a canopy, because the outer side sites, with the views, get HOT. Even on the cooler spring days. Bathroom Situation Upper and lower loop bathrooms all have showers, and you have to get the tokens at the check in kiosk (and get them before 6 p.m.). Overall, I found that the team on site keeps everything as clean as possible. But by late afternoon, it often happened in the lower loop that there was trash and some little puddles all over the floor and stalls out of toilet paper. I visited the upper loop restrooms a couple of times -- for those reasons -- and they were far more pristine and also more specious. Instead of single stalls, each bathroom has a restroom space and a shower space behind one locked door. You can fit a whole family in there, which is super helpful if you are a family and need to all get ready at once. Also, most everyone in the upper loop has an RV (lower loop is more popular with tent campers), so it makes sense that the upper loop bathrooms are cleaner overall. You can buy wood on site at the check in kiosk (buy it before 6 p.m.). About $6 per bundle, and you get about 7-6 nice pieces of wood of varying sizes. One bundle was ample enough for 5+hours of a nice fire. But, and this was surprising to me, you cannot burn a fire after 11 a.m. Location, Activities The campground is in Bonita, about 30 minutes away from San Diego's downtown and coast. Unfortunately, no ocean views here. I take it that many people come here wanting a more remote get away, while still being able to access what San Diego has to offer. On site, there is a whole park for kids, with a splash pad/water features that are open during the summer months. There is also a large grassy day area ideal for parties and picnics. You can also rent out the pavilion, which is near the amphitheater and in the upper loop. It has a kitchen and a large community room where there have been birthdays, showers and receptions. Then there is the nearby reservoir, which is popular for mild walks and fishing, but absolutely no swimming or water contact allowed. Other Apparently, they allow vendors on site -- for parties and other activities. For a cost, you can have a DJ, live music, pony rides, bounce houses. This all appears to be more geared toward summer activities. read more

Loved our stay here. Clean large campsite in upper area with nice valley view. Quiet with nice vegetation that provided adequate privacy. Grocery stores and post office close by. Rangers friendly and helpful. Just don't park 2 vehicles in addition to RV and keep vehicles off dirt area. Also, allowed to burn wood purchased at campground. Yes, some bugs but not an issue. Love SD county campgrounds. Great price in nature feels like real camping for this RVer. read more

This was the first time camping in a County Campsite. My family highly recommended Sweetwater because of the amenities and how clean the campground is. And I totally agree. We had a wonderful time as novices. There were so many sites to choose fun, easy to access. #86 is a pull-through and looks like a brand new site. Garbage is close by and shower and bathrooms in walking distance. The rangers are also helpful and friendly. We had a problem before checkout where my daughter's car battery was dead. Desperately using jumper cables, we eventually had to call AAA 45 minutes before we had to check out at 12:00 Noon. I flagged down a ranger and explained our situation. They were very understanding and accommodating and said that we can wait until AAA arrives (ETA 12:22 pm). This relieved our stress and left feeling that the rangers cared. THANK YOU RANGERS!!! It's a nice camp ground and very inexpensive. Close to the highway and located right next to the regional park/reservoir. Campsites have new electric outlets, ground is dirt/gravel and you're not allowed to put up hammocks. Other than that, it's decent for a few nights. Especially when you're on a budget. They recently expanded it and built some new loops, which look very good. They even have some educational events happening at the amphitheater. read more

My stay was very uncomfortable, they charge you for the shower also no hot water, they were rude at the very start, before I could even start my stay I was told not to come back, I was given a hard time about my car ,there was a misunderstanding with my reservation. Which ended in having to leave and pay a fee. They will treat you poorly If you have a certain kind of look or age group. I'm very disappointed in Sweetwater summit campground. read more

Clean and quiet campground. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lower loop is older with a bathroom with multiple stalls and shower stalls with minimal separation. Upper bathrooms are individual bathroom shower combo's so if you camp in the lower loop, use the upper loop bathrooms for a better shower experience. They do charge a small fee for showers, but each token lasts around 4 or 5 minutes. The showers were hot, if anything too hot, but that was easily adjusted. For price, I would recommend and would stay there again. read more

I visited sweetwater summit campground for a weekend and it was a nice vibe to the place and very clean. We also put up a pool for the kids on our spot and after a few minutes we were asked to take down. I wish we could've had more time with the pool up on our space. The employees there are very nice for the most part. The problems i encountered was lots of ants , the trash bins get full pretty quickly and the light on our space wasn't working and it couldn't get fix. Myles tried fixing the issue a couple times but no luck but he was great anyway. I already have 2 separate dates to go back and can't wait. read more

Beautiful camp ground overlooking the city of Bonita. And in San Diego Airport's flight path it was awesome watching the planes. We also saw some of the air show at Miramar from out site. Our site (#127) was very level. They rake the dirt at the sites it was very clean. Our spot had a fire pit and a picnic table. Only problem we had with our site was the last person used powdered comet/Ajax as bug deterrent. What a mess! We tried to sweep it up no luck with that. We ended up hosing rear of site down so we didn't track it into our rv's back door. We also didn't want our dog getting into it! In todays times of bug sprays I just don't know why trashing the place with powder is still allowed. This camp ground has clean bathrooms, trails to explore, a day use area with gazebos, picnic tables, a splash pad to play at. Great place! read more

This was our first time staying at Sweetwater RV Park and this review might get lengthy, strap in. We stayed for 7 nights for a conference in July in our 43 foot toy hauler. We're on the fence of staying here again and I'll run you through our pros and cons. Mind you, this is our experience, our opinions, and yours may differ. Pros: - All the employees/workers were super friendly and nice, except for one (we'll discuss him later). - They rake the sites after each person checks out of their stay. - They do have pet stations around the park. - It's cheap. $35 a night for full hook ups in San Diego. - Weather, it's San Diego. Highest we saw in July was 84. - It's out of downtown and in the hills. - They have a decent hiking/biking trail. - Bathrooms were always maintained and cleaned. - Splash pad and playground were clean and kept. - Picnic tables were in great condition. - I love planes, the campground is directly over the flight path for San Diego airport. Cons: - "Supervisor Ranger James" is a (insert not nice word) who likes to fluff his feathers. The park doesn't allow golf carts, which is dumb in itself. But ranger James shines the flash light in my wife's face and demands her return to her site and asks what site she's in. There's dozens of kids going WELL over the speed limit on E bikes and E scooters all week, and they're fine. But my golf cart which only does 10mph (the posted speed limit), ranger James acts like we just committed murder. He never explains anything to us, refused to talk to us, just wanted to fluff his feathers. I go talk to all the other staff members throughout the week, ALL of them say "yeah we allow golf carts, i don't see why not". You all need to get on the same page. We aren't harming anyone in our golf cart, heck we mostly need it to take the trash the half a mile away to the dumpsters. You need to allow golf carts in your park, they don't harm anything. The workers all drive around polaris ranger gas UTV's...... so is my Can Am allowed since it's registered? He drives by sites, shines his flashlight into people's sites, makes people move their truck a foot over, he's a prick in charge and the power is in his head. Go after the ACTUAL problems like the homeless walking through the park. Power trip Officer Doofey over here. He does all this at night, never during sunlight. - Instead of ranger James being overly concerned with my golf cart, maybe he should address the trash issue in the park. My mom almost hurt herself on your broken trash enclosure. (See photos). These enclosures are massive steel structures designed to keep animals out. Well, the bottom hinge welds were broke clean off. How are we supposed to open this gate when all your other dumpsters are over flowing. (See photos). - Again, ranger James needing to address the trash issue, the dumpsters often are over flowing and trash just piled up (see photos). - Ants. LOTS of them. Ants every night in everything we have. - Dry brush and overgrown bushes everywhere. Fires are allowed but most people don't understand how to safely have a fire especially with all this dry brush on the sites. - The campground is hilly and tight. My tail swing hit the wooden fence getting into my spot. I couldn't be more inside because then i would have taken out their light that didn't work. A lot of the drive entrances are STEEP and most trailers will drag. - Check in takes a while and a long line occurs. They need pictures of license plates on everything, driver's license, etc. This isn't a huge con because it maintains who is supposed to be here but it takes forever when there's a massive line. - Once the rangers leave for the day, there is no gate or security to stop any randoms from driving in. I don't think having a locked gate after 5pm is the solution, but a gate with a combo lock that rotates weekly would solve this. Multiple county parks do it. If you're still with me, thank you for reading all my thoughts and opinions. I hope your experience is good, but we probably won't stay here again which means nothing. read more

Being in the Military a number of years It was ingrained into me that 15 minutes early is on time. I showed up about 15 minutes early on one trip and I got lectured by the Ranger. The next trip I was on time and had to wait 10 minutes or so in line to get checked in which means I wasn't at my campsite until after 2pm. So its okay for them to rob you of your paid time by them being slow but you get lectured for showing up 15 minutes early on their time? They don't seem to enforce rules on the long term (my guess is employees stay here) campsites because a few of them had too many vehicles illegally parked according to their own rules. But yet I was told I couldn't have a tire on the dirt on my site but this site had 4 vehicles when their rules say 2. Rules for thee but not for me? The place is nice, the place is clean, The campsite was really immaculate when I got there and really level. This place is fine once you get past the grumpy check in Rangers and their select enforcement of their own rules. read more

My boyfriend and I were so excited to camp at Sweetwater. The reviews were relatively okay, and I did an insane amount of research to make sure we had everything we needed. It was one of the last campgrounds that still had sites available at such short notice (one week) so I decided to book it. When we arrived, we were a little underwhelmed by the campground. First, everything is extremely dry (as to be expected for San Diego - but this was even more so) - everything was yellow and dead. There were no pretty mountains, no pretty rolling hills, just view of highways and dead prairie. When you go camping you want to have pretty view, feel like you're away in nature, but this wasn't the case here. Immediately I was a little bummed, but thought we would ride it out and just make it fun regardless. When we got to our site, we got a little more upset. First, the site directly to the left was what we believed to be someone who actually just lived full-time on the campground, which is totally fine but they had not cared for their site and it looked like a straight up salvage yard. There was a car directly off the camp road on the site that was completely totaled, just sitting there. It was the strangest thing. Also, we had a random sewer at our site and on the other side of our site was another person who lived there full time, drunk and scream singing at the top of his lungs. Awesommme. Still, we thought whatever it'd be a funny story. THEN I looked down and saw swarms of ants. Everywhere. Disgusting. It's camping, I know there are going to be bugs, but this campground has a legit problem. They were crawling everywhere and I knew the second we put down food on the picnic table to eat or put a tent down they'd be crawling all over all of our things. Gross. To make matters worse, there were wild Foxtails surrounding the entire site. Growing about 3 feet high. This place was not cared for, it was just full of weeds and bugs. Foxtails are a concern when you have dogs, especially our two English Bulldogs because the foxtails can get burrowed into the skin, throat, ears and mouth and cause an immense amount of pain and even require surgery to remove them. With these blowing around everywhere, we didn't even think another second. We just packed back up our site and left. The cherry on top of the cake was the fact that the rangers didn't seem to care one bit about the disgusting state of the campsite and wouldn't give us a refund for the $34 we paid and refused to apologize. Awesome! Guess you'll just get another horrible review of your awful campground you care nothing about and proof of how terrible it is from someone in marketing who you really should've been a bit nicer to. Hopefully this serves as a warning to any future campers, just don't go here. San Diego has too many beautiful campgrounds to choose from to go here. read more

Recent trip review. Stayed in the upper campground for four days. Bathrooms were kept clean the entire time we were there. Didn't seem to have any ants in our space, but I noticed others were sprinkling borax around their trailers. Come prepared just in case. Regarding check-in time.... they are pretty Gestapo about entry time being 2 PM. You have to show your car and trailer registration when you check in, if you've never been here before. We had to show drivers license and all registrations before entry. If you arrive before 2 pm, they make you wait in the staging area that's gravel and gnarly. The check in process is the reason for the loss of one star in my rating. Nice easy hiking trails around the area. Off-road bicycling is permitted as well. Nothing real serious, but a few up hills. Some folks bring their horses to ride the trails here. We would return and stay in the upper section only again. Be aware also that the campground is under the flight path of arriving passenger planes at San Diego airport. read more

My family and I LOVED this place and can't wait to go again. DISCLAIMER - If you are use to camping up in the mountains and in the real wilderness, you might think this place is a joke. But for city folks like us...it was a cool experience in our own backyard. The campground is built right next to a freeway. It is right in the path of the San Diego Airports landing path. So there is noise. You should know that if you are not expecting it. You are less than 2 miles away from major supermarkets and busy city life. This campgrounds is by far not out in the middle of nowhere....having said that....it's fantastic. The site is very well maintained and the staff...I can not tell you how nice the staff is/was. There is a cool little water playground for the kids. There are several easy trails you can hike, and a near by reservoir that you can fish at. Like I said...this is not real, out there in the wilderness camping. This is get away from your normal city life camping in your own backyard. We had site #8 which was great and well shaded. Site #2 or #3 are also very good. And the price is right on!!!! Thanks again Sweetwater Campground staff!!!! We will be back again soon. read more

We came to Sweetwater Summit Park before to bring our kids to the splash park which they loved, but had never camped yet... until a few days ago, we finally spent the night! We reserved our campsite online. The site seemed a little bit outdated but it was still easy to navigate and make our reservations without any problems. What I loved most about it was that they provided a picture of every single campsite lot for you to preview it. Each lot seemed to have at least 1 tree for enough shade to cover a tent, which is always nice. We arrived at 10am. We were told check-in is only at 2pm, but since our lot was empty they allowed us to go in which we were pretty thankful! Later that day, I returned to the gate to buy some campfire wood. The person told us they'd deliver it to our site. Cool. Fast forward to when we actually wanted to start a fire.. Still no wood. I went back to check what was up. It was a different person, but he apologized and promptly delivered the wood to site. No problem. I slice the bag open. Earwigs. Everywhere. The wood was infested with them. I probably looked pretty silly kicking the wood around, but hey. What's camping without encountering bugs right? .. I guess. (Encountered more while undoing the tent but that's another story). Other than that.. I do want to mention that the bathrooms weren't very clean, to say the least, but I've seen worse. My oldest, 4, potty trained was too scared to use the toilets, but luckily we brought his little portable one just in case. Overall... The park was pretty clean. Great spot to bring the kids, especially first time campers since you're not too far out of the city, which is perfect. It also seems to be one of the cheapest place around (so far) in the area that I've found. (34$ for a tent lot) We'll definitely be coming again!! read more

Overall, this is a great and convenient park. This is not a park tucked away in the mountains, and it's located by the freeway so you have to expect some noise and traffic. But for a weekend getaway, it's great. The Good: Convenient- This is a great location and very easy to get to! Forgot anything? You can just hop over to many stores that are ten minutes away! Somewhat Clean- The grounds were clean and the restroom by the tents were fairly clean. The new restrooms by the RV's are great though Friendliness- The rangers and volunteers were friendly. They DID put out our campfire @ 11 am with water, but rules are rules. The Not-SO-Good: Questionable Characters - We were next to a site that had some questionable characters. They didn't cause us any problems, but one of them asked us for cigarettes about every 4 hours. It seemed he spent his day walking around asking for cigarettes in a daze. There were some questionable characters at the RV restrooms in the middle of the night. Again, no problems, but odd. Restrooms by the Gate - The RR by the gate, where most tents are located are older. They seemed fairly clean, but with the sketchy characters around, I would have liked the restrooms that were individual stalls with a closed and locking door. read more

They are full hook-up sites that are a lot nicer and are partly paved with fire-rings. I have stayed in the upper area a few times now and since, I haven't had any incidents and it doesn't feel as sketch. I still pack up all of stuff and stay aware as you always should. BORING HIKE champagne, strawberries, and horse sh!t I forgot about this place until recently. I was new to San Diego and didn't know much about anything - excited to see anything new. Show me something amazing! My X took me here for our first hike together when I first moved to San Diego. We didn't camp here, just hiked. The hike is VERY simple and shared with mountain bikers and people riding horses. We hiked maybe 1-1.5 miles to the wooden structure with picnic tables and he surprised me bringing champagne and strawberries in his backpack (so cliche, its not that romantic). The view is nothing but an elevated view of Sweetwater "swamps" and Bonita (very boring view). Nothing amazing. As I tried to sip on champagne and strawberries the smell of horse shit filled the air... the trails are used by horse riders and if you road on a horse before then you know they crap like crazy and it stinks and it's just left behind. So don't be surprised when you see piles of "brown rocks". After sitting at the view point, I was ready to get going. We both are runners and suggested we do trail running down back to the car with his two dogs... that part was fun. Until the next review... read more

We stayed in the newer campground Positives: inexpensive, RV spots were very spacious and had some privacy shrubbery between spaces, splash pad and parks were great for the kiddos Cons: the ants, ohhhh the ants, we got infested and spent much of our time trying to fend them off :( The added daily rate for a vehicle was a bit frustrating, we drove out motor home in and had to pay for another vehicle because our RV was a 'driveable' RV. The shrubs don't offer much for shade and there is not much enforcement on driving speed through the park. Overall we liked the park aside from the issues we had. read more

We don't camp here, but the park it's self is a wonderfull place in the hills. There is free parking (you'll simply roll through the toll booth and make a U-turn). We come here to run the trails in and around the lake. The provided maps are - poor to say the least. I'm reasonably sure that they were drawn by a grade school child with broken crayons, and a need to pee. Sadly, many of the extended trails are marked closed; limiting longer hikes into the beautiful hills. The grounds themselves are really well maintained, the bathrooms clean(ish), and the staff is very friendly. If you ask them about trail options, they're glad to take a moment and explain land marks and a little about the trail. Very much worth the trip! read more

I HATE this place...don't even THINK of going on a weekend. When it first opened we LOVED it...it was free and a great place for my little ones to play. So when they next year they added $3 a person, which I didn't mind, it was that they also added no diapers. My little ones were one and two. Both in diapers. When we arrived my kids were excited and when we pulled up, she looked at my little ones and said Recently they changed it to no diapers because the filters cannot take urine. OKAY. Why the heck would you make a KIDS water park and you can't make it with filters?!?! So we had to leave with crying kids in the van....THANKS JERKS !!! read more

My friend just had a sweet 16th party for her daughter 1/19/15. When she sign the contract never once they inform her about the $3 entrance fee. They told us it was a new policy and that it just took place. We didn't want to make many trips, so we took every car she and I own ($18 total). I just feel bad for all her guest that had to pay in order to get in. The place are nice to have a short party. They only give you 30min to setup. Party must be over by 9pm, that include clean up. read more

camped at Sweetwater Summit campground on 6/18 to 6/19. Great place to camp with reasonable price on a partial camp site. Would have given this place a 4 star except for the fact that my campsite was raided by the Gestapo. My checkout day was 6/19 12 pm. I decided to extend my stay and before I could call in to extend, I received a voicemail from an employee named Gustavo at 12:22 telling me checkout time was 1200 and I needed to remove my stuff when I get a chance. So I immediately called the phone camp reservation line and extended my site and confirmation time was 1:02 pm. Well to my surprise when I arrived to my campsite, my tent was torn down and everything in my tent including my mattress was thrown onto the picnic table with disregard to my personal property. My tent now has holes in it and my mattress leaks. All this because I didn't check out in time. I'm sure glad hotels don't throw your stuff out onto the streets when you don't check out on time. Well I packed my gear a and contacted the supervisor James Stowers who informed me that what happened was the computer system didn't update until 5pm. He had informed his crew to remove my gear but when he saw that I had extended, he then instructed them to place my stuff back the way it was. Good relatively hidden spot (entrance to park is out of the way) so it was nice and quiet when my family was in town and parked their RV here. Bathrooms were clean and orderly, park rangers were all informative and friendly and the other interactions with park guests were all cordial with no parties. While the spaces weren't huge, it wasn't super tight like some other San Diego locations where they really pack the RVs in just a few feet from each other. Would gladly go again. read more

Beautiful Place! We reserved the Pavilion with Kitchen for our children's birthday party. It comes with 10 picnic tables. 2 outside BBQ grills (good thing we didn't need them because they were dirty)the inside kitchen has a grill and burners. It also has a refrigerator/freezer, microwave a sink and plenty of space to prep. Be careful when you turn the grill or stove on! You can't really tell if the gas is on or off. The rangers don't turn it on so you have to figure it out on your own. The reservation fee is $350 with a $100 refundable fee. Bathrooms are next to the kids playground. There is also a $3 Day Parking fee. read more

This is an okay place .. I would say it's pretty small . I know the lake is open for fishing down here but no animals are apparently not allowed near the lake . The parking isn't free I'm assuming and it closes at sunset . read more

Sweetwater Summit Campground - Parks Near Me - Bonita, California

This place is very well kept. Nice campsites. South ones have lots of trees covering them. All the north spots are new and there are very little trees. North area is very new (2013). Nice bathrooms with showers and curtains. Very kid friendly. Nice waterpark and playground. If you come on weekends you can fish at the lake. If you don't like kids don't come here. Only one space looked like someone lived in it and had junk all around. Some spaces have horse corrals. Water and power at most spots. North newer spots seemed to all have sewer as well. Dump station when you leave. read more

Sweetwater Summit Campground - Panoramic of Lake - Parks Near Me - Bonita, California

We came, we saw, we left. Took the dog here for a day trip. Maybe it was just the 3-day weekend, but literally every picnic table and shaded spot was reserved (we were told to leave one area that had no signage that it was even reserved and was quite empty). All the trails were near the water - so not dog friendly. Even drove around the camping area, just to get a feel for future camp spots, and it had a great view of...houses and a golf course. Overall, I was extremely surprised at how small and crowded it was compared to how large the reservoir was. I would not camp here since you may as well camp in your back yard. Water was also quite a ways from the camping/picnic area, and fenced off - one entrance only. I was disappointed to say the least. On the plus side, it was SUPER kid friendly (they have a little water park), so if you are going to have a kid's birthday party, and you reserve the area, that seems to be the way to go. For a spur-of-the-moment, pet-friendly day trip, this is NOT the place to be. read more

Not bad for a somewhat urban campground. There is no privacy at the sites, so don't expect it to be quiet, but it's fairly clean and well organized. Doesn't get very dark at night due to light pollution. Every campsite has a water pump. Most people here use RVs, but there were a few tents as well. Very dog friendly. read more
