I admit that despite a life that has lead me across the globe, I am from Terre Haute and I have a soft spot for the Swope Art Museum. Let's start with the free admission. Funded by private money (I myself being proud of being a donor for most of my adult life), this is a rarity in the art world. Go see their installations and permanent collection, because this is something the staff, volunteers, board and donors work very hard to provide (free of charge) for the greater community. In a normal situation, in most cities, to view this caliber of work comes with an admission of fee. Secondly, let me highlight the quality of the permanent collection in this museum. Edward Hopper, Grant Wood, John Rogers Cox (regional artist and really spectacular work...."White Cloud" from 1943 is not to be missed !) and George Schrieber ("From Arkansas" from 1939....I have looked at it a hundred times and could spend an entire day in front of it). Art is not for the privileged few, but for the many. Their place is not on the outskirts of daily life, but the center of it. Art should contribute to the well being and happiness of everyone. On this concept alone....GO VISIT THE SWOPE! I am proud to be a member and donor. I am proud to say that my very first job ever was at the Swope back in 1988. I am proud this museum is still open to the public showing great work, not only in their permanent collection, but in their varied installations. I don't live in Terre Haute, but on the occasions I am here, I will never miss an opportunity to visit the local gem of the Swope. Go visit the Swope!

Museum was well staffed with security. Superbly clean. It took us a little over an hour to walk through the various rooms. Several of the rooms were empty, awaiting new exhibits. I'd probably come back again when the academic year is in full swing. My favorite part of this visit was the Blue and White Ceramics exhibit they have on display. There are many great pieces of art to see, though. Ellnora Krannert was extremely generous and numerous pieces in the museum are thanks to her. I wouldn't recommend this museum to children under 13-14, unless the kids/tweens/teens are really into art, art history, etc. I just think the little ones would be bored. You can visit KAM's online calendar to see if they ever offer children's programming. (Head to the Spurlock Museum if you're on campus with little ones instead.) Highly recommend KAM to anyone else. We're very fortunate to have an art museum of this caliber in our community. Summertime is the perfect opportunity to explore these locations on campus. I grew up in Terre Haute and this is my first time visiting (Vigo County school system in probably not real quick put such a progressive figure like Debs into their regular field trip rotation, thus why I never visited as a kid myself). Upon spending some time on the campus of ISU last week, I made it a point to wander over to 8th street and pop in. I was warmly welcomed by Allison Duerk, the Museum Director and a new intern who were at the front door. Very clearly stating at the beginning that this museum, tour and talk that this house/museum is open to all regardless of political views, backgrounds or opinions. Eugene Debs is part of the historical fabric of Terre Haute and the socialist movement and is simply honored by having his Terre Haute home preserved as a museum for all to visit. A sincere treat to have Allison as my personal tour guide on the day of my visit, for she is an extensive wealth of information and understanding about the Debs history and the family. Really very interesting and paced well as we wandered the home. She was excellent! Not a historical museum in a big city, but I provide the Eugene V Debs Museum a 5 star Yelp review because Allison and her open and welcoming manner coupled with her extensive history and understanding of socialism and the Debs family is remarkable and makes for such an interesting tour. Short the prior occupants of the home, the house itself is an interesting piece of architectural history and neat to see on its own. In the summer of 2019 as I visited, the museum is open from Tues-Sat, noon-5pm. There are not set times for tours, but they will start a tour as guests walk in. I asked a lot of questions and was engaged, so I was probably there for an hour and a half. You could take longer or less time depending on your interest level and time I suppose. You could probably wander the house on your own, but the information someone like Allison or one of the docents or tour guides would provide would easily tie everything together into a better understanding of who Eugene Debs was. There is not an entrance fee to visit, but they do point out their donation box and suggest a donation if you can. Without donations, this historical building would most likely not remain. An interesting little gem on the campus of ISU. Go visit!

Why bother visiting if the mansion is closed, you ask. There is a cute sculpture garden behind the mansion that is open even when the mansion is closed. There are close to 30 sculptures. There is limited parking next to the house but plenty of street parking. We walked up to the front door and you have to ring the doorbell to get let in. We were greeted by one of the many volunteers on site. Frequently, there is a short presentation before your self-guided tour. We missed the presentation so the volunteer gave us the highlights. Mr. And Mrs. Haan, who donated the house to their museum foundation, were walking the house also!! We made our way through the mansion which is wonderfully decorated for the holidays. Upstairs, there are multiple train sets. One has buildings from England and the U.S while the other one features Lafayette buildings that have been made available around town for purchase. It took us about one hour to take in the whole house and read about the antiques and view the Indiana art. (P.S.- there is a public restroom available for use if needed on the first floor). We enjoyed this visit and look forward to coming back in the Spring to enjoy the outdoor sculpture garden.

During regular office hours (M-F 9-5), visitors may view the dozens of representative pieces in numerous styles in the gallery. The colorful and whimsical landscapes are from his native Greece as well as of time spent in Indiana. Most of the paintings are in bright autumn colors. But don't be fooled by the whimsy. Below the large paintings are a couple smaller paintings that have the most realistic water images I have ever seen in a painting! Absolutely amazing! Towards the back of the gallery are pieces that represent the dark experience and observations of the artist from World War II. The color and whimsy of the landscapes really contrast the dark tones of this part of the collection. The caricatures of each painting express the emotions that many of the people experienced during the period of war. The gallery also has a nook where other style of painting are represented. My only negative about the gallery is that there has been no attempt at labeling any of the pieces. Some of the signatures include year references, but otherwise, there is very little information. No flyers or handouts. The only information about the artist or any of his work is at the website. If they would add small descriptions for each piece, it would add to the experience for the viewer. I dropped off some photos of my Grandmother and Great Aunt for a future exhibit of entertainers and famous people from Terre Haute. The museum is currently closed as they are preparing to move to a larger space in downtown Terre Haute. However, we were able to take a tour of the museum and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the items that have not yet been packed up for the move. A couple highlights for me were artifacts and a lovely painting of Gerstmeyer Tech High School, a Terre Haute school which is no longer in existence. My parents met at Gerstmeyer in 1943 as high school students, so that was special for me to see. I also really LOVED seeing the one and only Stiffy Green, legendary bulldog who used to reside in his master's mausoleum in Highland Park Cemetery. The museum staff who we met, Susan and Tanis, were both wonderful and enthusiastic about the museum and Vigo County. I am looking forward to them moving to their new space (which will also be ADA compliant, the current lovely old mansion is not). This is a must visit if you are passing through "The Crossroads of America" .

Everything is very well organized and the people who work there are really friendly.
