At United Books--and as far as I can tell, you have to ask to get the name (which is what began my ill-fated chat) otherwise it's just signs outside for live nude girls (not sure where they are)/peep shows (there are *tons* of booths, seemingly unregulated)/adult books (a few)--there's also a theater, once called the Sansom Cinema and apparently freestanding but now accesible only through the far back corner of the booth area, where a black box tells you to slip in ten bucks and leave the way you came. I did not venture far enough to report on the theater, though I will admit I remain curious. But weird hostility/recalcitrance notwithstanding, this is one majestically decrepit relic of a place, staggering along into the early 21st century without much acknowledgment of the changing times outside. The Music Box is located alongside the casino near the Borgata buffet. The location makes it very easy to enter comfortably right before showtime. The Music Box is not Borgata's main showroom, but instead a medium size venue with about 1000 seats. There are floor seats and elevated seating to suit most people's needs. You'll get a great view and sound from just about anywhere. If you're seeing a rock band, the first few floor seat rows to the side of stage may be too close to the speakers. They do have a bar within the theater with basic drinks. The venue is well-staffed with experienced help to ensure a smooth show.

Fast-forward four years: on another December trip to AC, now Wally's World is gone, replaced with Play Ground, a modernized, more couples-friendly iteration (lingerie now tops the marquee). Since the sign on top was without question the best aspect of the place, I must sadly downgrade it for rendering itself bland. It probably makes better business sense this way, but I ain't here to judge marketing plans, I'm here to grade as I see fit, and given how abundant the smut is in Atlantic City, I can't think of much to recommend about Play Ground without the historical resonance of its old marquee.

This was my first trip back to AC since 2019 and this pool has seen better days. Our 3 days visiting were a mixed bag. The best server at the pool is Brenna, a sweetheart who sincerely loves her job. Otherwise it's loads of young kids (and even one older bartender on Tuesday that was rude and genuinely could give 0 you know what's) "working" (on their phones, huddled in the towel cabana). The best deal is the bucket of beers or hard seltzer, and the pita and vegetarian dip appetizer (our favorite). The ground on Monday morning was sticky and dirty and the water needed to be skimmed. However the strict no children after 2 pm rule was a god send (can we stop bringing children to AC?) and security is on it. This place is torn between no one caring about it and security upholding rules.

Unfortunately, my recent stay at the Borgata was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I've had. We checked in Saturday. That evening, we went to put food in our refrigerator and discovered food belonging to a previous guest still inside the fridge. Gross, but I initially brushed it off as an isolated housekeeping oversight. The next morning, things got significantly worse. The TV in our room wasn't working, and when my friend went to take a shower, she discovered a significant amount of someone else's hair sitting in the shower drain. There was also no soap in the bathroom hand-soap dispenser, so we had to call to have that addressed. At that point, we went to the front desk and spoke with Connor, a manager. We explained everything, and he was apologetic and told us he would put a $100 food & beverage credit on our room and send housekeeping up to properly clean the room. We appreciated the response and went back upstairs. Except housekeeping never came. After waiting, I called the concierge to check on the request, only to be told that there was no housekeeping request in the system. The concierge then put one in and I asked how long it would take because we needed to get ready for dinner. I was actually told that I could take a tissue and remove the hair from the shower drain myself. I'm sorry, but absolutely not. I paid to stay in a hotel room. I should not be cleaning another guest's hair out of the shower drain myself. Eventually, housekeeping did come. However, after the housekeeper left, the hair was STILL in the shower drain. I literally had to follow the housekeeper into the hallway and point out that the hair had not been removed. This is not about expecting perfection. Hotels make mistakes. It is about basic cleanliness and the fact that we repeatedly gave the property opportunities to fix the problem, and somehow the most obvious issue was still not addressed. Then, to make matters worse, I received our folio after checking out and discovered that the $100 food & beverage credit Connor specifically promised us was never applied. So now I'm left wondering what, exactly, was being done to resolve the situation. I have stayed at an enormous number of Marriott properties over the years and have never experienced this combination of poor housekeeping, lack of communication, and failure to follow through on a commitment made by management. Food left in the refrigerator. Hair from a previous guest in the shower drain. Missing soap. Broken TV. Housekeeping request not entered. Being told to clean the hair myself. Hair still left in the drain after housekeeping. And finally, the promised $100 credit not applied. That is an extraordinary number of basic failures for one stay. The Borgata is a major property, and as a Marriott-affiliated hotel, I expected significantly better.

The bar occasionally offers live music, but my favorite time to visit is during the holidays, when they turn it into a festive Christmas spot with holiday beverages. There are fun decorations, strands of lights, Home Alone 2 playing on the televisions, and much more to really get you in the holiday spirit. I most recently tried the Pomegranate Margarita on their seasonal menu and thought it was excellent; it was not too sweet or too weak. I should note that there are rarely servers in the lounge area, so you typically need to go up to the bar to place an order, which can disrupt the flow of fun you might be having. Overall, I think the 1927 Lounge is decent on a normal day, but much better when they have a themed takeover happening.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but as soon as I walked in I noticed a male dancer up in the cage, followed by about 8 women in costume. The choreography was sexy yet very tasteful. They have acts that incorporate thrilling tricks that keep everyone on their toes. I could not help but take videos so I could show all of my friends and family back at home just how incredible it actually is. You will not be disappointed!
