Was heartbroken when I looked up Taco Casa and it was "closed". Spoke to my aunt and she told me that it is now Taco Al's. It was everything my soul needed! So nostalgic. My go to is and always will be the veggie burrito. The only difference now is that they LOAD them up. I would have paid double the price. From a NON-Local.... This is a mom and pop owned place and it's old, but It hold memories for many including mysef who used to eat here when visiting my grandparents. That can account for a star or two for me. Now the food.. it's simple, just that. However the cheese is grated fresh daily and your order is made once you place it. So yea, it's not drive thru fast, but it is quick. I'm not sure if "California style" is a thing or even it.. but it's for sure not like the others. I personally think the taco burger is the best. If you have never tired one or you do like them, get one here. Those are delish. I order mine-no lettuce (just my preference). The second item I suggest is the tostada. I do not get the 4 & 5 star reviews about this place. The chips are literally a personal bag of Tostitos. The salsa is Pace in either mild, hot or extra hot. The refried beans are from a can and I'm not sure about the Spanish rice-it wasn't good enough to be Rice-A-Roni. I had the super Sancho and it was fine - nothing to write home about but when I opened it out of the paper wrapper neither end of the Sancho had been tucked in so half of the ingredients fell out onto the paper wrapper. The taco was what you would make at home with generic ingredients. I don't know - I guess if you were raised on fast food and don't like fresh ingredients then this is the place for you. read more

50 plus years making Taco's! One of my favorite places to grab a quick bite of get it to-go and it's really not changed but the name. Food is always tasty and they do use a microwave. I wish I would have payed attention on how they heated the food before the microwave was invented. Always order a Con-Queso with chips included (make sure they add the chips on the to-go) It's simple but so so good. You might want to take some home because you will crave this later on. I always get the combo burrito with a small side of hot sauce. I will actually dip my burrito in the queso!!! It's not a large burrito so feel free to order a Taco they always put a slice of tomato thats either going to love or hate. The other favorite is the taco burger. Yes Taco Burger! All the ingredients that goes in a taco goes on a bun. Simple but when steamed (microwave) it's fabulous. sauce on the side or add it lightly. I like the bean tostado but always ask for a double shell and it's perfect. And they have the best crushed ice machine and you might come back just for a beverage as I witnessed! read more

Used to be one of favorites. Probably won't go back. To start with I put in an order for 2 items to go and then waited for 40 minutes, yes, 40 minutes! They were not very busy they were not understaffed, they're just extremely slow. It's a 3 minute drive to the office, the food was soggy and didn't taste very good. This is a great hole-on-the-wall Mexican food joint. The atmosphere is simple but pleasant. Hard seated booths and hand written signs about the "No Checks" policy. The menu has all the usual offerings; tacos, burritos, etc. They also have some surprises including sanchos and taco burgers. The staff is friendly and helpful. Don't expect table service. Orders are taken and picked up at the counter. As you order from one person, another starts making it. The meat is well seasoned, the vegetables are fresh. The tortillas tasty and the taco shells are crisp. The cheese melted well and the re-fried beans were flavorful. The critical reviews seem to expect more of the interior and the food than the exterior promised. Taco Casa delivers exactly what it promises. I grew up eating at Taco Casa. I love the location. It's small, the only windows in the joint facing the street. Every other wall is brick, and the place is dark and mysterious but I feel comfortable there. I remember when we would come here on Friday nights when I was young, my dad would give my brother and I just enough money to pick out two songs on the old jukebox. Every time, without fail, I chose Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2." It's still my all-time favorite song to this day. Sadly, the jukebox isn't there anymore. But the jukebox isn't the reason my family frequented this restaurant. They have good food, too. Granted, it's a bit on the greasy side. And while it's made fresh, they still microwave a lot of the items. I always order the combo burrito with extra sauce. Their queso is good, but served to you in a styrofoam cup. The tacos are crammed with meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes, and if I remember correctly, they also serve a Frito taco salad that's pretty yummy. Don't go here expecting authentic Mexican food. In fact, I think it's pretty hard to find authentic Mexican food anywhere in Topeka except at the fiesta and in Oakland. read more

The food isn't anything special does hit the spot when I'm wanting some quick Mexican food. Queso is pretty good and the burritos are okay. They tend to fall apart pretty easily though. This is a Topeka staple for Mexican fast food. They are quick and their food is GOOD!!! It's a little location. So when they are busy, it gets crowded. They do a really good business during lunch. So be prepared to wait. But, it is worth it. Their double decker tacos and bean and cheese burritos are awesome. The chips and Queso are wicked as well. There is nothing in California that resembles this place, nor has there ever been in the last 20 or more years. Therefore, I don't know where they got the, "California Style" that is displayed on their sign. It should read, "Taco Tico Style." The food is somewhat unique and somewhat good, but in my opinion a complete rip-off. I just paid $5.77 for a taco burger (which is only about 10% better than a Taco Tico taco burger) and chili con ceso which is a bag of Tostitos (3 oz.) and a styrofoam cup of cheese sauce. Although somewhat enjoyable, for that price I didn't even get a drink or enough cheese to finish off my chips. The burger was luke warm....and most importantly, I'm not full (and I'm not a fat-so either). The people weren't in the least friendly, but weren't jerks either. It was just business as usual. When I walked in, the three or four of them stuffed behind that little counter, all appeared to be hypnotically staring out the big front window and couldn't break their stare. It looked like the start of a SNL skit. I will say it is fast. My two items took less than a minute to receive and I think involved a microwave. The prices here should be more in line with Taco Bell. Taco Casa strangely has a following, so I think they'll be alright. Rumor has it, it's magically good for hangovers. So, I apologize to all my alcoholic friends for this review. But, if it were the same food, same service and had just recently opened, I think they'd be out of business fast. I was going to go with three stars, but "Meh, I've experienced better." is definitely more appropriate than "A-Ok" for Taco Casa. For less money, there are better MX places to go, especially if you have more time. I'm stuck between 3 and 4 stars on this place. Usually the food is pretty good -- Something that really gets to me is the paper wrapping that they put on the food. By the time that you get your tray to the table and start to eat your burrito that will fall apart if picked up, the paper wrapping is falling apart as well! Seriously, if this place has been around for so long, could they not invest in some wrapping that doesn't fall apart after one minute, or perhaps some plates? If they have plates, I've NEVER been offered one. Anyway, like I said, the food is good but not so great that I want to come here all the time. The locals seem to love it though. read more
