We went for a late lunch (about 1:30 p.m.) on a Saturday, so I wasn't expecting the place to be packed, but was certainly not expecting that we were the only ones there. We were browsing the menu and they have a Saturday and Sunday lunch menu for less than £9.00. They also have student specials. Everything on the menu looked really good, but I chose to go with the beef burrito. My friend went with the chicken fajitas. She also asked for sparkling water with lemon and the waitress had asked to double check that she said lemon, but when it was brought over it had a lime in it. At least we knew that the meal was going to be fresh... there was a lot of chopping and sizzling coming from the kitchen. My friend said that the chicken fajitas were good, but could've used a few more peppers rather than onions. My burrito looked lovely on the plate and I was so excited to see Pico de Gallo on the side of the plate. The pico was great, the burrito was really good as well. It was seasoned well, the tortilla soft (not crispy like a lot of other places), and I really liked the drizzle of sour cream and queso on the top of the burrito. The refried beans were good, but a little dry. And the rice... well I still haven't found a really good Mexican rice since I have been here. The rice was good, but tasted more like something you would get in an Indian/Middle Eastern restaurant. Overall I really liked the food. I would go back and I would recommend it to others.

My friend had the meatballs which came in a sea of foul smelling chilli & tomato sauce. He didn't finish them & said he wouldn't order from here again. My girlfriend had spaghetti bolognese which looked & smelled awful, and was essentially a brick of congealed spaghetti with a very meager amount of dry looking minced beef dumped in one corner. She left most of it for our cats but they weren't interested either. I had a folded cheese & bacon pizza which was one of the oddest & most unpleasant pizzas I've had the misfortune to encounter. Unlike a traditional calzone, this thing had very little filling, just a thin layer of slightly seasoned minced beef & onion which had the texture of gravel, punctuated with large sweaty chunks of onion. The topping was a layer of mozzarella with a few tiny flecks of leathery orange matter which I understood to be bacon. The thing was dry & bland, entirely the opposite state in which it made its exit this morning. We also had a side order of "Southern Fried Twizzlers" which turned out to be seasoned curly fries, served moist & floppy in a polystyrene box. The man taking our order was polite & helpful, and delivery took around 30 mins on a Saturday night. Such a shame then that the food we received was made with no love or care. "Lincoln's only Mexican takeaway" is their tag-line, and also the most positive review they're likely to get.

We have been here a few times over the years and have always been impressed with the food. Here, in Texas, we're used to a certain type of 'Texas-down-home-cookin' and Cactus Jack's gets as close to it as I'd expect in the UK. The ribs and chicken dishes are very good (better than some of the places here in Houston). The service is good, and that's saying a lot from us overly demanding Americans. The portion sizes are generous by UK standards. The part I love the best is the interior design. The restaurant isn't just Southwest themed, it's like walking into an old saloon. There is a old school jail cell in the back you can have dinner in. There's tons of gnarly wood everywhere. One time when we were in there, there was a whole troop of older people dressed in Western wear. It was awesome. I did have to correct them once because they had the Texas flag hanging upside down, but I can forgive them on it (people in the USA in other states would get it wrong too). They did fix it and I was satisfied. The only totally weird thing is the waffle dessert. In the USA, waffles are not dessert items, we eat them for breakfast. They do not taste sugary or have little lumps of sugar inside of them. We don't top them with ice cream and chocolate sauce. But honestly, the waffle dessert at Cactus Jack's is so good, maybe we should! If you live in the Donny area and haven't been... Go! Try it out! This is a recommendation from a real Texan who has a cactus somewhere in the vicinity (Houston is actually kinda like a jungle).
