It's the best burrito restaurant around. It's always excellent, it's family owned and run.

Tex-Mex is a perfect cuisine to me. I am not always craving it, but when I am, nothing hits harder…read more Through my years in college, I discovered Taqueria Jalisco to be the gospel and genuinely the best Tex-Mex in Lubbock by a long shot. My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

Seriously the BEST place I have been to in Texas. They truly deserve their "Authentic Mexican Food"…read moresign out front. The restaurant is decorated nicely with Mexico's infamous bright colors. The waitress was absolutely amazing. She answered our questions and even gave suggestions. Rice and Beans: its difficult to find a GOOD place here in Texas with retried beans that don't taste like they're coming from a pre-made can/bag. They had a nice consistency and booming with flavor. The rice was incredible! Most places fail with the rice because they're over salted, mushy, or undercooked. T.J.'s rice was fluffy and nice orange color. Truly authentic Mexicano rice. I had the asada tacos which were really good. The meat wasn't tough to chew. The only thing I didn't like was the fact the tacos weren't individually put on the plate. They laid out four of the double stacked tortillas almost like a deck of cards and poured the meat across. I had to basically prepare the tacos myself. They also had a lot of grilled onions, but next time (if I'm ever in this part of Texas again) I know to ask for easy onion. The only thing they could work on is their tamales. The masa tasted almost sweet, too sweet for a meat filled tamale. Overall: Highly recommend! Service: A+ Food Quality: A Ambiance: A+

Thankfully our local friend provided us with the details for Chuys. The decor on the inside really leans into the 1950s/1960s Americana vibe that's often associated with Lubbock without leaning into kitsch territory. The table we were at took about 5-10 minutes to clear up for us and once we were seated we felt right at home. Food came out hot and exactly as expected. The server also recommended that I HAD to try the local concoction adult beverage that apparently is a staple of this location. It was a nice treat and a quick way to feel at home. Our bill was also not exorbitantly high, which is also something else to note about this place. You'll get your dollar to go far while here. Parking is convenient right off the highway and in a large shared parking lot.

The steak burrito I got was good but pretty mushy with the burrito quickly falling apart into a bit of a soupy mess. The chips and salsa were passable, and part of a quesadilla I had was alright, but overall it was all subpar to mediocre. Service was lacking a bit, and the interior is just kind of a mess of styles. 6/15 overall it was just a very passable experience, but I don't think I'll voluntarily eat there again. There is just nothing drawing me and there are much better options. GLEAMER

It seems there is a second hidden parking lot as well. The menu touts "green beef enchiladas". Being used to Tex-Mex where beef enchiladas are served with dark red chili gravy, I asked about the "gravy". The server told me that green chili was what they made and assured me that I would like it. Perplexed, I ordered a guacamole and went back to the menu. The guacamole was the best I've ever had and about that time six Highway Patrols, two local Police, and a Deputy walked in for lunch. Cops don't eat bad food, so I confidently asked for Green Enchiladas and a chalupa. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and crisp, but the enchiladas were incredible.
