Wow! This was a busy place the night we stopped in for a quick meal. Ordering was fast and accurate. Service was fast and we received our order hot. It is rare that you experience extremes. Taco Tico is certainly the absolute worst fast food Mexican restaurant I've ever suffered through. We ordered three items, the mixed platter, the enchilada platter, and the deluxe nachos. Soon after receiving and tasting them they were thrown into the garbage. Wow! The "beef" is almost all texturized vegetable protein and tastes just like bad canned dog food. The artificial sour cream at least tasted like almost nothing. The rice was spit out it was so bad. The oil laden chips were....edible if you like that type of thing. Not one single item that wasn't bad. Disgusting! If the food was anything but horrible I would give a much higher rating. The service was quite good. Friendly staff, prompt delivery, low prices. The restaurant was very clean including the restroom. TacoTico is either the strangest one off Tex mex inspired fast food joint, or some sort of after school/summer work program for white Iowan teens to experience a bit of culture while avoiding slinging drugs like their older less progressive cousins two blocks down at Taco Bell. (to be fair one of the young man was brown but his ethnicity was not actually identified). This rag tag crew in black tees, khaki shorts and those very cool drive through headsets is ran by one 40 year old man who was talking about which of the tween boys he could beat in rocket league because is I quote he is a "grand master" Atmosphere: felt like a more local authentic Hispanic taco spot with cheep prices (initial 8.2) I peeped inside and saw my burrito being tossed in a microwave and instantly had second thoughts. 5.6 Food: Appearance: 2.4 I have not put something in my body that looked more like diarrhea than what this food will ultimately create soon in a bowl near you (like really near you) Taste: 11.6 or 6.2, but that all depends on your prep, if you ask me to grade this as Mexican fast food I feel baffled my taste buds tasted ZERO Hispanic flavor. but my god is it maybe the greatest lazy drunk or low budget bang for your buck, the only comparable o can come up with is the south east cook out. They have a version of their "food" anyway you could ever want it and it's cheep and if you know that it taste so much better. If you go and want Mexican food you WILL BE UPSET! (Built into the final score is an editor note of tomfoolery, I feel like what info that was available online about this place and via word of mouth failed me, reviews were great Mexican local joint and no actual website to explain the style is hard if my initial expectations had been corrected the score would be higher, but because I feel they duped me (it's 2024 make a fucking website have a yelp page) 6.98/10 not a seven and sadly it could've been. For years, Taco Tico has been my favorite fast food TexMex. I frequented the two restaurants in Lexington, Kentucky during my college days. After moving to Wisconsin and then Texas, was elated to stumble upon the Taco Tico in Macon City, Iowa. The food was as I remembered until my visit today. The salsa bar was the same: yeah!!! But what happened to the light and crispy chips and fluffy, tasty corn tortillas? The ones served today were hard, thick and tasteless! Couldn't talk my little one into eating her soft shell tacos because the shells aren't the same. Is this a supply issue or a permanent menu change? Speaking of menu, the Texas Smothered Sancho was no where to be seen. My husband settled on a Smothered Sancho and it was nothing more than a burrito with a few sprinkles of cheese. How is that saucy and smothered? I pray this was just a fluke on a busy day! Will be in the Lexington area next month. Hopefully my memories there will stay in tact. read more

The allure of this Taco Tico is baffling. I have eaten here twice and was disappointed both times. The enchiladas were cold, the nacho cheese lumpy, and who knows what was going on with my Tico dinner. I have eaten at the Fort Dodge location numerous times and I must say the Mason City location needs work. Not bad, but definitely nothing exciting. I had a cheese enchilada, served on a styrofoam plate, cold in the middle and hot on the edges. The Taco deluxe was pretty good, and they do have a few choices of sauce so you can spice it up to taste. The refried beans, well were refried beans, again served in a styrofoam cup, hot on the edges and cold in the middle. Looks like I must have just missed the rush, came Sunday night at 5:00 pm, so the floor had a nice coating napkins, lettuce, and taco chips.
