But to find it, I had to do a bit of looking and on the way to the airport , made my driver, Nathan, stop so that i could buy some (along with beans). They have many other items, some of them local, from the pumpkins (can't carry those in a suitcase alas) to sweet pepers and a lot of other tasty delights which are NOT made locally. they are only open until Oct 31, so plan on getting there before Halloween. VanAntwerp Farms are out of Seymour, Indiana. Today, they were selling spring produce. The lettuces were huge and beautiful. I counted four different varies plus kale. The strawberries were so fresh that I had to pick up a quart at $8. The clerk was friendly and worked quickly to keep the line moving. He gently bagged my strawberries. The strawberries were delicious - one bite took me back to my childhood of eating fresh picked local berries. The berries were perfect, dark red and super juicy. You have to get there early to get the lettuce - it goes quickly at only $4.

VanAntwerp's is based in Reddington, Indiana about 5 miles North of Seymour and their 50 acres of farmland produces tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, green beans, winter squash, pumpkins, eggplants, lettuce, berries, cantaloupe and watermelons. They bring practically all of it to Statehouse Market - it's incredibly high value produce at fair prices and with super friendly service week after week. Owned by David and Kim Sturgill, VanAntwerp's is also known to bring plants and other items to the Statehouse Market. I'd say they're one of the most consistent truly "farm" type vendors. The employees are always knowledgeable and can help you select the correct items for your needs. This includes being able to explain different types of tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables. I haven't experienced VanAntwerp's outside of Statehouse Market, but I've never heard a bad thing about them and never bought a bad product from them. So, if you're in the downtown area on Thursdays between 10:30am - 1:30pm, stop by the Statehouse Market and you can pick up remarkably fresh veggies. There were close to 40 vendors that actually carried wonderful local produce, eggs, meat and baked goods. There are also vendors selling art and crafts. Several local restaurants had booths selling assorted street food, iced tea and lemon shake-ups. I left (wishing I had bought more) with several bags of produce including fresh corn. Prices were reasonable. The market is hopping with lots of people. There were a lot of dogs on leases enjoying their people. Expect short line at most vendors. The market featured a live musician and there was a group entertaining the kids with balloon creatures. There is plenty of parking just behind City Hall and across Washington Street. I highly recommend and will be back. This is the 5 star farmer's market that I've been looking for.

I was in search of fresh, farm grown, vegetables and found plenty here. As I walked around the market all of the vendors were very friendly and helpful as they eagerly described the items that they had for sale. I ended up leaving the market with green beans, corn on the cob, zucchini, kohlrabi, beets, red potatoes, and tomatoes. All of these goodies will last us through the week. I have never tried kohlrabi but the farmer that had it said they just peel the green off and slice it put a little salt on it and eat it so I thought I would give it a try! The fresh flowers and arrangements were absolutely beautiful as were so many items found in the local craftsmamen's booths. I will probably be right back here next weekend.
