I had take out from the Bengal Brasserie last night, and I must say I was disappointed…read more Firstly, I have to preface any review of a curry house with the following statement, I'm from Glasgow, we have some of the best curry houses in Britain, and we take curry very seriously; and with that out the way... I ordered a few different things from the menu to get a taste for the selection on offer, the majority of which missed it's mark like an Original Trilogy Stormtrooper. For starter I ordered Cauliflower Bhaji and Mutter Paneer. Now where I'm from a Bhaji is typically a spicy fritter (somewhat like a Pakora), however the Cauliflower Bhaji at Bengal Brasserie was a mildly spiced cauliflower curry, this was intensely confusing and unfortunately not aided by the cauliflower being tasteless and stringy. The Mutter Paneer faired better, however after 10 minutes with the lid off the cheese (which had obviously been cooked in a lump together and not in pre-fried pieces) had resolidified into a gelatinous lump under the admittedly well made lentil and pea curry. The Lamb Madras was received similarly poorly. BLAND and unappealing it featured not one of the textbook hallmarks of a good Madras; heat and lemon zest. What I received tasted like unseasoned meat stewed separately and added to two ladles of diluted curry paste. An emulsion texture and consistency adding a depth of blandness to the whole experience. The one redeeming feature of the whole meal was the Stuffed Paratha; herby, rich and buttery, it's hard to believe this came from the same kitchen. The experience was further compounded by the awful reception in the restaurant. After hustling up for 25 minutes after ordering I was greeted with "Takeout?" followed by pointing at a seat. The one table in the restaurant which was occupied had to call over three times for the staff member in the dining room to come take their order, to which he repeatedly responded "Of course sir" while continuing to text. After 10 minutes of waiting (having not yet paid nor received anything so much as a glance since sitting down) I came very close to walking away.
