She's an excellent stylist and has been layering my hair beautifully all this time , long layers because I like my hair long. She's very personable and offers her advice, honestly. When I saw a negative review on her on yelp, I couldn't believe it. I asked her about it and she says that there is no record of this person getting her hair cut. I will never ever come to this place again. "Sugar" was my stylist and did an absolute shit job. This was 3 months ago and I'm still growing out what she chopped. I finally mustered up the energy to write a review after realizing that NO ONE should go through what I did. First of all, who the fuck doesn't "believe in layers"?! Let me back up a bit.... I was greeted and asked what I wanted done to my hair. I responded with a trim and reshaping of my layers. Mind you, she approached me when she was still doing my daughter's hair so I assumed she just wanted to know a bit and would get into detail later. It was my turn, she took me to the back, did a wash. No convo about my hair whatsoever so I assumed she knew wtf she was doing....I mean I'm not a stylist but everyone I've gone to didn't have a problem in doing this. I've been rocking this style for a very long time. I noticed she was trimming....for quite a while. So I asked....are you just trimming and getting it even? She responded with a reassuring yes. Then she goes to talk about layers and how sometimes it makes people look like they cut off too much. She told me how she learned that about layers in beauty school...blah blah blah.... I told her how I actually wanted layers just at the front and I wanted the shortest layer just below my chin. She was fighting me about how she doesn't think it's a good idea. I told her that that's what I wanted. She said....okay. She takes quite a bunch of my hair in the front and CHOPS it off. I'm waiting for her to blend it in....and she says she can't do it. She doesn't believe in it and will not be a part of me butchering my own hair. Calls in someone else to do it. This incompetent so called hairstylist had cut so much in the front that there was barely any hair to blend it out! I've never heard any stylist say that layers weren't good. In my opinion, she probably just didn't know how to do layers. What I don't understand is why anyone would continue to do something they didn't know how to do. The entire establishment gets a 0 from me, luckily Yelp doesn't give 0's. It was very disappointing that they even let someone this unskilled and unprofessional rent a chair under their name. I should've got at least my hair cut for free. COMPLETE FAILURE! read more

5 stars for Cayla! This woman put up with my incredible lack of knowledge and experience when it comes to getting all made up and fancy when I asked for my hair and makeup done for the sub ball. I literally asked her to do what she thought would look best with my hair and face shape and would complement my dress best, and my confidence was not misplaced. Not only did she do excellent work, she was incredibly amicable and made the time there enjoyable. She was able to accommodate my unexpected 2 hour change in appointment time, and asked my opinion as we went, even though I put full trust in her hands of what she was doing. Darlene is the bomb: you know you are great service when, instead of up selling, the stylist says "stop being lazy and just take a few minutes to style your hair instead of perm or dye." Okay, she wasn't that direct but may as well have been but I appreciated her honesty. What I was looking for, I wasn't going to get out of a bottle. Anyway, she took the time to her my concerns, made a couple of suggestions and then proceeded to keep my entertainer while she gave me a flattering cut. I've been lucky with finding good salons on Oahu but I admit I've been jumping around either because of time or distance but I'll stick with Darlene from now on. Plenty of parking and it gets crowded so don't think you'll get a walk in easy so save yourself some angst and makee an appointment. read more

I'm so picky and my hair is so horrible to work with, I've maybe liked one haircut I've gotten. MAYBE. I usually just put a hat on and refuse to get a haircut for a few years. I couldn't take it today, my hair is down to my butt and I have zero volume. I was up early just looking for something close and open. Andy was a delight on the phone, super sweet, super fast, so far so good. They take me in immediately. I come in and I get the coolest stylist. I didn't catch his name but he was awesome. I had the worst experience here a few months ago. I came in to get my bangs trimmed and an older gentleman was my stylist. He criticized my hair color and texture and he even criticized how my face looked with bangs! He was so rude and pompous! I just can't get this type of service out of my head and I'm glad I'm able to share what a horrible experience this was. I'm a 24 year old female, I know what I like, this isn't the first time I I'm asking for a certain cut. As a stylist you shouldn't bring clients down, your job is to leave your clients feeing glamorous. If you don't know how to work with a certain hair type then just tell your client the truth instead of making excuses and trying to make your client feel bad. 2nd HAIRCUT WITH NOE: Perfect haircut, BUT! Noe dropped the comb on the floor, picked it up and put it back into my hair. No sanitizing, NOTHING!! This was two days ago- and we are supposed to at least be diligent with not spreading germs at the moment ! For this reason, along with the fact I was charged 60$ for a haircut, I won't be returning. Ps- Noe is very "touchy." Three times during the hair wash, I felt his hand brush the side of my breast. I finally crossed my arms over them so he wouldn't be getting anymore quick feels. It's a real shame I can't feel comfortable and receive sanitary service in this establishment. He's an expert at hair. But his hands wonder and he needs to stop putting combs off the floor back onto the customers head. He brags about his "thirty years in the business." Taki's has been here forever. Being an native Aiea-ian, I know but I never stepped foot in this place until Denise moved here. I was always afraid of the location, being in the Pearlridge area, but I've come to see that it ain't so bad. Most times I have found parking right in front of the store which is good for me because I'm such a last minute person. I started coming to Taki's because Denise moved to this location. This works out well for me because Down to Earth is right next door. Taki's facilities are very neat and clean. All of the employees/independent stylist are super friendly and down to earth; they make you feel at home when you walk in. And if you have to wait, don't forget to help yourself to some coffee. I don't know what else to say about this place except for it feels warm and inviting which are feelings that work for me! read more

Went to get my hair straightened by Nicole. She was very personable. She explained the process and how long it would take. She was right on. Basically she entertained me for the 3 1/2 hours. My hair was beautiful when she was done. I had very frizzy hair and it came out very straight. I followed Nicole's directions and didn't get my hair wet or put any clips in it for three days. After the first wash I was freaked a little. Where my highlights were my hair was basically fried. Nicole did tell me it would be dry but sections of my hair were really bad. Luckily I had really good products that helped after about a week. I've had it straightened for about two weeks now. My hair is straight but not super straight. I can now wear it without straightening it. All of the frizz Is gone. Including the shirt little fizz hairs. I am satisfied with the results. And the price was not as much as I thought. read more

You ever want to confess to your hair stylist that she is just no good after a few tries? When you find yourself purposefully wearing a beanie or a baseball hat 99% of the time after you get your hair styled it says a lot about your stylist. Now I'll confess that my hair is not the easiest to style but then that's why I offer a new stylist 3 attempts to get it right, or at least improve. Allow me to explain: A stylist gives a cookie-cut haircut, right out of the book, to 3 different guys but because all three guys have different hair (thick, thin, wavy, curly, etc.) if they were to show up the following day they would all look differently, even though they got the exactly same cut. This is where a STYLIST comes into play. A stylist adheres to ones hair type, does it wave on one side but not the other? Is it thin on top but thick on the sides? Do you have a cowlick? (look it up). This is why I offer 3 tries to a new stylist. I understand that at 1st she "may" not get it right but it allows the stylist to familiarize themselves w/my hair. The 2nd time I hope they somewhat know how my hair forms/shapes, by the 3rd time I expect them to at least be familiar with my hair. This is why I go to a "stylist" and not your random Supercuts for $9.99. After 3 weeks after I got my hair styled by Genel for the 3rd time I am still wearing a beanie or baseball cap waiting for my hair to grow back to a somewhat decent length where I can style my hair once again. Don't get me wrong, Genel is a lovely person, pretty cool actually BUT I don't go to a stylist to be cordial, I go so that they can my hair look amazing, heck.... I'd settle for good. Time to let my hair go for 5-6 months and offer an opportunity to a different stylist. A little side-note, my last stylist of 2+ years retired, I used to drive an hour just to be seen by her. Good stylist are great when you find one. read more

my hair has been in need of some real TLC since 2015. yes, you read that right. it's been that long since i've had a quality cut. & there was no better way to kick off 2017 than to walk out of a hair salon feeling bossy & saucy! HYPES: looks professional and clean! every stylist was looking their best and everyone's hair was top notch. that was my first impression. after all, you'd hate to walk into a salon and see a bunch of sloppy stylists, right? not here. everyone was lookin fly! i got Noe, the male stylist, whose father was the one who originally opened the shop. am i super glad for randomly being set up with him! he had 10-star customer service! was so nice, so funny and SO knowledgeable about what cut would work best for my face. i loved him! if it's your first time, ask for him. he's wonderful! i walked out feeling incredible. my head felt 5x lighter and i couldn't stop touching my hair. i had dinner that night with my best friend and her family from out of town and they all noticed the major change in my hair/attitude. it's really amazing what a great cut can do to your confidence. prices were reasonable. i had super long, damaged hair and i was charged $55 for a shampoo, cut & style. i'll be returning for some color! easy location with parking as well. Nikki is the best! I met her many years ago when I took my teenage son to get his hair cut. He and I have the same hair type - wavy with a tendency of frizzing during high humidity days. She tamed his locks so I decided to change hair stylists and have been going to Nikki since. I go there every three weeks because my gray comes out quickly. I would love to go weekly just because my hair looks great after a blow out and style. She does gorgeous up do' which I have her do when I have a special event to attend. It's not just for proms or weddings. And while you're at it, I recommend getting her do to your make up. I had an updo done in Cancun and it was horrible. I looked like I was going to dance the flamenco and was just missing the big comb with lace. I was just missing Nicole. Her prices are a great value. I highly recommend going to Nikki. read more

First time there. I've only had my hair done once professionally. So I trusted Honi with my Hair. I've always had it long and decided to try a layered look. Taki's was very clean and inviting. The atmosphere seemed warm...even the back where they shampoo your hair. I must say that I felt very as ease and relaxed. Honi did hair color, cut, and highlights. I told her what I wanted and asked her advice as well. She was very pleasant and professional. She's been my neighbor for years but in the short time we conversation about hair, kids, and life. It takes a pretty special person to style your hair and make you feel good at the same time. I wish I took a picture of the finish product. I love my Hairstyle and will go back again. We talked story with ease, he had me laughing and just so relaxed. I didn't even get to show what styles I thought would be nice in me. He explained my nine structure and told me what he was gonna do. I was totally at ease and let him go for it, and OMG I just love it! I would definitely recommend him to my family and friends. My appt. today was with Megan. I'm a new customer and she was very friendly, asked me what I'm studying, where I'm from, etc. She made a lot of jokes and small talk to make me more comfortable. I haven't cut my hair since December 2011 so I just told her to chop it all off and do to my bangs whatever she thought would look good. I asked her about straight bangs, which I know would be very hit or miss with my face shape. She said it would match my face very well but that my forehead was too small and that it would make it look like my bangs were eating my face. She also told me it'd make me look even younger (the last time I had straight bangs, I was six years old...I'm 20 now). Most of the hair dressers I've seen have taken my hair and steered it in whatever direction they wished...Megan, though, really listened to what I wanted. She did the straight bangs but left the length a little long so if I decided to part them to the side, it would blend nicely. The location is good, lots of parking. Plus, if you want to show off your new haircut after, the mall is right there, and so is Down to Earth if you get hungry. Everyone there was friendly and it's clear that the staff gets along. They were all talking and making jokes with each other and it was a very comfortable environment, not like some of the other places I've been to where the staff didn't really interact. I looked read other salon reviews on Yelp and their mixed reviews had me worried. It is MY HAIR after all...it's not like I can hide it. I called first to see if they take walk-ins and I found out that they do. The girl on the phone was very nice and thanked me for calling since I was a new customer. Came here on a whim when some friends recommended it. Didn't have any stylist in particular, but had Genel do it for the first time and was impressed. I've been getting my hair cut by Genel for the past 3 years or so now and she's never done a bad job. She always listens to what I want (even though now it's always the same) and we even bounce some ideas back and forth on what to do with my hair next. If it seems like it's been a while, she'll even contact you to see if you're ready to schedule your next hair cut. For a guys haircut, it costs about $27 + tip which includes shampooing, which is about average for a lot of salons. I've seen the work of the other stylists there and am impressed by all their work and would recommend anyone looking for a good haircut see one of the many faces at Taki's. read more

The staff was very friendly but maintained professionalism. The prices are extremely reasonable for what you get!
