Cannot recommend this tour enough: adult, kid and baby friendly! We took our company of 31 people to Haines specifically to do this excursion, and it was even better than expected. Driving the side-by-side Kawasaki Mules through the beautiful rain forest was breath taking and exhilarating! We stopped at a few beautiful overlooks and even got to see Chilkoot Lake from above. On the way down the mountain we stopped for a delicious homemade lunch of chicken, halibut, salad and potatoes. The views from the cozy lodge are stunning! All in all, its a "must-do" when visiting Haines! read more

This tour was an absolute blast. We have been looking to this day for an entire year and it was worth every penny. The trail was so much fun and there were plenty of stops to take pictures along the way. The lodge is half way up and there were hot cookies waiting for us. Then we went up to the top of the mountain and boy what a view. We stopped to pick blueberries and on the way down we stopped back at the lodge for a wonderful halibut dinner! What a treat! From the moment you're pickup and dropped back off at the dock and everything in between was such a delight! You start off getting picked up at the shipping dock. Vans super clean and safe. They have wheelchair access and staff have absolutely no issues assisting those who need it. (From what I saw they went above and beyond for a gentleman on our tour) They had Ponchos and blankets for our rainy day. We had a blast on the tail really getting to see the land. I'm having a hard time articulating how amazing this was but you'll have to see for yourself. On our trip we had 16 people in our group from 6 to 70s and everyone said was the best part of our cruise. Two said the food was better then the cruise ship. Highlight Bus - Vehicle and driver were safe. Has safety belts and wheelchair access. Bathroom- clean and both male and female Tail vehicle- easy to operate, clean and safe Tails - easy to drive and clear path. Food- prepared in clean environment and proper temperature. Excellent excursion beginning at Skagway harbor. We were bused to the 4x4 lot. Lap blankets are available. Halfway up the trail we stopped for hot beverage and fresh baked cookies. Our trek continued 45 minuets up the trail and then back down back to the lodge. We were greeted to delicious baked chicken, halibut, potatoes, and salad. read more

This event was well organized from the start. Making reservations was a breeze. The company was at the terminal on time with a shuttle and it was a short ride to the start of the trail. The Kawasaki Mules were well maintained and the trail was in wonderful shape. The two guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. Dick, the cook at the cabin knows what he is doing, from fresh cookies and the fried halibut it was all amazing. Barb the owner was very engaging and ensured we all had a good time. This excursion on our cruise was the best event of the entire vacation! We docked in Skagway, took a shuttle boat for a 45 minute cruise over to Haines. This was an adventure in sightseeing itself as we cruised by steep cliffs, waterfalls and even saw some hiking trails and eagles. When we arrived at Haines, we boarded a bus who's driver was Mark, our tour guide. Now, Mark is quite an experience as he is very informative and humerous. He gave us a talk along our drive that was very captivating and made the 9 mile drive seem very short. When we arrived they were very organized and had our 4x4 'mules' lined up and ready to go. There were plenty of these buggie available and everyone had plenty of room. The instructions they gave are very simple to follow and the trail was easy to navigate. Now I want one of these four wheelers.... Once we left base, the first part of our trip took us up to a lodge where there were some fresh baked treats waiting as well as clean restrooms. After a break, we continued on up to the highest point allowed by law and were rewarded with spectacular views and information on the geology, geography and wildlife of the area. We saw bear off in the distance, eagles flying overhead, glaciers, snow capped mountains.... Just phenomenal! We did make several stops along the way to stretch our legs and take in the scenery and garner more information from Mark. Mark would lead the front of our small convoy of four wheelers and his wife Ruth brought up the rear. These machines are extremely simple to drive and all are in very good condition looking very new. On our return trip we stopped again at the lodge for lunch which consisted of halibut, roasted chicken, fruit salad, homemade coleslaw and potatoes. All home made and just delicious. We had great views from the lodge as well and plenty of photo opportunities along the way and at the lodge. The only bad part of this excursion was that it had to end. If you really, truly, seriously want to experience the flavor and knowledge of alaska, you must do this trip, it is worth every penny. Just look at the photos I'm posting. I booked this tour on my own as I was visiting Juneau and wanted a few days away. The locals told me Haines was a great place to go and I enjoyed every minute of it. My hosts in Juneau told me about Takshanuk and I'm glad I took their advice. Everybody else was off a cruise ship, but the owners were extremely accommodating to a single guest. The food was all delicious, the carts were fun and easy to drive, and the guide was very knowledgeable. We even saw a brown bear at the end, which topped off a fabulous experience! I would love to take the tour again, if I return with my family. read more

The two tour operators were very nice and knowledgeable. They had many 4x4 Kawasaki mules from which we could choose, and they had extra mules so that no one had to sit with a stranger. They quickly taught the drivers how to operate the mules. The mules were safe with their seat belts and metal cage on top. We embarked on the six-mile trip up and down the steep, curvy, dirt road on the forested mountain. We did not see any bears, although I think that one of the guides had a gun on him just in case. If you enjoy driving or riding these types of vehicles, I would recommend this excursion to you. The only problem that I had with the ride was dirt getting in my eyes and exhaust being inhaled from the vehicles in front of me. We ate fresh-baked cookies and a beverage at the lodge when we were halfway up the mountain. At the top, the view of the Lynn Canal, Chilkoot Lake, and mountains was picture-worthy. On the way down, we stopped again at the lodge, this time for a delicious meal of halibut, chicken, fruit salad, etc. We then continued our way back down the mountain before getting out of the mules and going on a nice, short bus tour of the town of Haines and Fort William H. My family and I embarked on this excursion through our Disney cruise! I can say by far this was OUR FAVORITE excursion!!! Barbara, the owner, does an AWESOME job with making you feel like family. The staff is all native Alaskans. This is very rare. Most excursions are staffed by summer help. You start the excursion by going up to the beautiful house where warm cookies and hot chocolate meet you. Seriously, best cookies ever. Then you continue up the mountain seeing the natural wildlife (a bear crossed about 5 minutes before us) and taking in the sights and sounds of all Alaska has to offer. On your way back, we had a fresh halibut and chicken lunch before we headed back to the ship. This was one excursion that my entire family could participate and we each had a great time. As this excursion was not offered with our cruise line Celebrity, we booked this excursion by word of mouth reviews. I cannot express how beautiful the scenery was, what a great guide Mark was, and the halibut and chicken dinner, WOW! The chef gave us the recipe for making this and his side dishes when we got home and we cannot wait to see if it comes out as delicious as his!! This was such a wonderful adventure. We have ATV experience but it was not necessary, as the roads are well maintained and allow easy maneuvering. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in having a little fun, a little history and education, and a whole lot of beautiful scenery. One of the best excursions we have been on! Mark & Rita were exceptional guides and very knowledgeable. The views were absolutely stunning. The warm cookies and hot chocolate at the lodge on the way up the trail, and the delicious lunch on the way back down just added to the overall experience. This was a fantastic experience ran by a very gracious group of people. The weather couldn't have been worse for the day we went. it rained the whole time and you couldn't see a thing off of the mountain. however, that didn't detract from it at all. I would definitely do this tour again. The operation is ran with military precision and down home friendliness - an unbeatable combination. I never once felt that I was on a commercial outing. it really felt like we got invited to hang out with some friends who had some really cool toys. this is a mechanized operation, but nature was the star attraction. My family really enjoyed hand picking the blueberries which were everywhere. the food was great. they had everything pre-planned. it's raining - here is a poncho. it's cold her is a lap blanket with plastic on one side to keep you dry. all of the equipment ran great. as soon as we pulled in I even saw the chalked lines for the shuttles to park in orderly fashion; you are in very good hands. These folks are proud of their Alaska. you can tell by the way they talk that they love their state and they love their town and they are pleased as can be to be sharing it with you.
