Very disappointing! I booked our salmon fishing/bear watching trip directly with Talon Air 6 months in advance for Labor Day Weekend. I discussed with their representative that my husband and I wanted to fish for salmon, but our daughter was only interested in Bear Viewing; I asked which trip to book. I was told that they would follow the salmon run and take us wherever the salmon were, and Crescent Lake was where they went in September. Imagine my surprise when the day of our trip arrived, and I asked our guide what our limit on silver salmon was: his response was "You don't have to worry about the limit. You won't catch any silvers." They took a total of 8 passengers on a scenic flight to Crescent Lake, put us on shore to fish at 2 locations, and no one caught a salmon; a few people switched to trout fishing and caught a few Dolly Varden. The lake was crowded with other fishing and bear viewing boats, including six boats going at a fast speed, in tight formation, with people whooping and hollering. This was a "remote location." My daughter spent the day sitting on the shore or in the boat, watching for bears. We were able to see a number (maybe a total of 12 ) of bears, so that was nice, and the guides were kind and said they were sorry that there were no salmon. The next day, I did call Talon Air to say that I was disappointed and we did not get the trip that we expected. When I asked to speak to a manager, the receptionist said she could help us, and did not let me speak to an owner/manager. She did say that they could not control nature. I followed up with an email to the owner, expressing my disappointment, and in two weeks time, I have gotten no response. After this experience, I cannot recommend Talon Air. read more

I have always wanted to see bears fishing. I wanted to go to Katmai but decided to do Talons fishing with the bears trip. If you watch the videos on their web site you believe this is the way the fishing will be. I fully expected to be with tons of other boats with the bears on the banks fishing with their Cubs. It was in no way like this. The scenery was nice. We never even got a bite of fish. We had a lots of Sockeyes already and were hoping to get silvers to try. The bears were only in one spot and they are only there because they throw all the carcass of cleaned fish there. We saw 2 adult bears and 3 Cubs. I was very disappointed!!!! Our boat broke down and we missed half of our trip. The guide was very polite about it. Another company towed us back to the base camp. My biggest problem was with the way the owner treated our guide in front of everyone. You don't reprimand employees in front of the customer. He did refund our money but not without saying some very rude and unnecessary things to one of the guests. He basically threaten to leave him out in the bush. Know what you want and don't expect what their pictures show. read more

We did a Remote fishing trip to Big River Lakes (Wolverine Creek) and snagged some Sockeye salmon. Our guide was easy to work with and helped out my parents and I the entire time. He knew of a "secret stash" so when he saw we were having some difficulty he took us over there to get a bit of a confidence booster. We also saw a ton of bear that day on the creeks and just around the river and the pilot who flew us there and back took us around a glacier and included some flight-seeing, So all in all the cost matched the experience very well. Most flight trips that take you to flight see are WAYY more expensive, and we even got fish to take home out of the deal :) However I do have a few negatives - There were a ton of boats near wolverine creek which made the trip a little awkward and not very "wild and remote." - We had a cap of 9 fish and only caught 8. It would have made sense for the guide to make sure we maxed out. Just in my opinion. - I was under the impression because I booked through Ninilchik Charters that our fish would be cleaned at the very least. But they just through the fish in a bag and off we were to find a expensive processing company. I wouldn't ever expect a Air service to clean fish, but I wish that I would have known because it definitely made the trip way more expensive than I planned. read more

One thing we learned after several days in Alaska is to confirm arrival time for all excursions. I am so glad we did. When we called, we were told that our trip had been cancelled 3 weeks prior and our money had been refunded. They had apparently sent us an email about it. No phone call or follow up to confirm receipt of the cancellation. If you are scheduled to travel with them, I would suggest confirming or finding alternate plans. Thank goodness Natron Air was able to accommodate - at a higher rate - but it was an amazing day. Of note, Natron Air said that they'd had many callers state they were not notified of their flights being cancelled, either. read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE, HUNTERS BEWARE! I went on a fly out, drop off caribou hunt a few years ago and had an atrocious experience. They promised to show us the massive migration from the air as well as to check on us via fly by once a day since they had other clients in the area. If we were in trouble they said to signal them and they would land and provide aid, or if we harvested an animal they said to cover the meat with a blue tarp and they would pick it up for us and store it in their meat cooler back in Soldotna. Flying out to our drop point they showed us one animal, the pilot landed and rudely told us to get out. We saw two caribou our whole 2 week hunt and harvested them both when we were promised to harvest our limits of 5 per person if we wished. To top it off after we harvested our first animal we field dressed it and placed it under a tarp like they said and they didn't fly by for 4 days! We lost the entire animal due to rot and spoilage which would not have happened if they had came by, or if they had informed us they would not be coming by which would have allowed us to store it differently so as not to spoil. Aside from that the fact that if one of us had gotten injured in the bush and had been expecting help the next day, we would have been in a bad spot. A close family friend experienced very similar problems with them the following year. Both parties have reported them to the Better Business Bureau. They might be a decent service for bear viewing and sight seeing, but I would never trust them with any sort of service after our poor experiences with them. read more

Wow, can not say enough good things about the bear viewing trip. We flew via float plane from a lake in saldotna to a emerald glacial lake on the kitmai peninsula. We then transferred to a small outboard boat. Our guide Danny was phenomenal. We saw at least 12 bears from the boat . Some as close as 25 feet. Only one or two other boats on the entire lake. Pricey, but worth every penny. The pilot even flew us around the snow capped volcano on the way back! Forget to other company's , use this one! Amazing!!! read more

I can't really comment on the flight or the fishing as our trip went sideways 12 hours before take-off. 12 hours prior to my reservation for 8, I received a call that stated that my time had been pushed back by 5 hours due to unscheduled maintenance, which Talon Air had known about for three days. As we'd had this reservation for 6 months, we'd planned our itinerary accordingly and had to make it back to Anchorage that night to freeze our fish and leave AK the next day. Pushing our reservation back 5 hours wasn't acceptable. After about an hour of speaking/arguing with the secretary and then the manager to try to keep our original morning time (it was given to someone else) and failing and then trying to get our deposit back because the later time wasn't going to work out, we finally were able to secure our deposit. Very unpleasant experience. Generally a 1 star customer service experience; however, I wasn't sure I would receive my deposit back or receive it in a timely fashion. I added a star because Talon Air was true to its word and I received my deposit back within three days. read more

My husband and daughter did a tour with Talon 8 years ago and raved about it. They were just as awesome last week. Went on a salmon fishing, bear watching trip with a fly-over a glacier as well. Our guide Matt rocked! Caught our limit of silver salmon and got to see sibling bears sparring in the water. Very helpful with the fishing part of it and extremely knowledgable about the area. I give this service a two star rating instead of zero because of the terrific guides we had on multiple days. The airplanes were also reliable, unlike some others in Alaska. Which is obviously important. But due to the owner of this business, I could never again patronize this place. I was hosting several clients on this particular outing, when i was aggressively approached by the owner about the location of my vehicle. Which was still occupied by me and all 5 our our clients at the time. I was in the same location the prior day without a word from staff. Yes, it's clearly marked, but we were dropping of a days worth of gear for a total of 10 people. The way I was spoken to by the owner without warning, was shocking to me and every person in my vehicle. We were literally dumbfounded. As a man, I can tell you this situation would have ended differently had I not been hosting clients. Later, the owner yelled at my client for peeing in the grass near the pickup location. It's the wilderness! And it was pouring rain with the nearest bathroom about a 45 minute flight away. I've heard other stories since about this bully and would love to see him the next time I'm the area, perhaps at the local bar or restaurant. read more

Outstanding trip to Wolverine Creek, had nine in the party. We took the Caravan floatplane. Pilot was outstanding with pointing out bears, moose, seals and Glaciers. This was the best experience of all the guided trips we took, all nine limited on Reds. read more

We did our homework before leaving home and decided to bear view and salmon fish with Talon Air. The communications with this company was great. We showed up on time and all the staff was friendly. We lucked out and had a sunny day. We boarded the float plane with our 4 adults, 2 kids, another couple, 2 guides and the pilot. The pilot made the smoothest take off and landing I've ever encounter even with this being the first on water. Both guides and the other couple were super friendly and we all chatted watching the scenic views below as we flew out to the jon boats. Our guide, Morgan, was wonderful. He's a school teacher in Oregon during the winter and a very knowledgeable guide for Talon by summer. I spoke with the other guide, Ben, on the flight out who was a super nice guy as well. I wouldn't hesitate asking for either of these gentlemen for you trip. We lucked out and were the 6th boat back waiting to get up to Wolverine Creek. In the meantime Morgan was showing us how to cast and what to feel in snagging the salmon. Bears were in the lake at the mouth of the creek and in the creek. Overall we saw 11 bears, 4 were cubs. We also caught our limits of salmon. Morgan was super great with all of us in netting our fish and showing us what to do. Even my 2 great nephews, ages 8 and 9 got their limit. Morgan then took us to a photo spot with a great waterfall then back to a small grassy island to clean our fish and grilled 2 fillets with seasoning he brought, one he makes up hisself. This trip was worth every penny and on the flight back the pilot flew us over and close to this huge glacier. Use the porty potties before you fly out. If have to go while out they will take you to shore which we didn't do but saw another boat do so. read more

We filed with the Alaskan BBB and Attorney General - Talon's response was that we couldn't afford the trip and couldn't handle the out doors. Terrible Terrible people and service. This Fly In Bear Viewing to Crescent Lake was supposed to be the highlight of our Alaskan Vacation. Steer VERY CLEAR of this company. They take your $$ and treat you like total krap. Our excursion was from 12:30-6:30. The weather report for Soldonta was clear for the day - BUT NOT FOR CRESCENT LAKE! The pilot/owner was a grumpy crimudgin - clearly didn't want to speak. IT POURED RAINING with UNDER 40 degree temps! - No shelter - No fire - No nothing The boots provided leaked. We asked for the guide to send the pilot back to pick us up at about 3:00 but were told he couldn't! We literally stood on the side of the bank - soaked - freezing - shivering for 3+ hours. Guess the guy had to mow his yard or something. A few minutes flight in - why in the world would you let your customers endure something like that?? Why not come back and get them when requested in those conditions? Obviously because they don't give a krapp - nice as pie before you pay - All of us ended up with Phenomena and Bronchitis for the remaining week in Alaska. We also noticed that the other excursion companies on the lake, provided pontoon boats with cover on them rather than the johnboat with NOTHING. An email was sent explaining why we wanted a credit and/or refund of some type but they don't even respond to the request. We travel all the time - we are country people who hunt, fish, ride horses, farm - but being on vacation without our personal gear to keep dry and warm in those conditions - I would think would be pretty typical of anyone out of state. I think the guide probably didn't get a full day pay if we went in early. TALON AIR - Takes your money and treats you like krap! One can only hope Karma is a wonderful thing.... Fantastic! This was the fishing trip of a lifetime and what I always dreamed about. The price was an exceptional value at $375 per person. We take numerous flightseeing trips by plane and helicopter and usually pay about $400 per person for a 1-1/2 hour tour. This fly-in fishing trip included the flight, lunch, sightseeing around the lake for birds, and five hours of Sockeye Salmon fishing with a professional guide. Black & Brown bears were observed fishing the head of Wolverine Creek less than 50 feet from us. They were several other boats on sight at the creek but they line up and each boat, by gentleman's agreement, takes 30 minutes at the head of the line at the creeks mouth. During that 30 minutes we had the fishing experience of our lives and filled the cooler with all four limits of Sockeye. That didn't include an almost equal number of fish released. Our family of four went on a "bear viewing trip" to Big River Lakes using this service. We flew over on their DeHavilland Otter, which was cool. We were told to bring fishing licenses, which we did, only to find out that we were not fishing. That cost $25.00 more, and we would have happily paid it. We were told that the pontoon boat we would be on had a hibachi grill to cook our fish for lunch. Instead, we got to watch a lot of other people catch fish, while we and another family, (including four teenagers in total), who were equally confused and disappointed were bored to death for several hours. Finally, on the return flight home, they flew us through the top of a glacier, (very close and quite scary), and the plane seemed to stall coming off the face, (probably a cold air pocket), but frightening as the throttles on the 58 year old plane were punched. The pilot knew his stuff, and it was probably fine, but I have flown too and would not have risked the low altitude, low speed pass in a plane with one engine, in an unrecoverable situation - should that engine fail. If we had fished it would have been four stars, had we fished and had a flight by the glacier at a safe altitude without the theatrics, it would have been a five star. Scared me good, and I used to fly sailplanes, but I may be to timid for the Bush pilot world. read more
