Do not hire this attorney. My experience with Tamara Benefield was not just disappointing -- it was professionally and ethically alarming. I paid her a flat fee of $25,000, plus $2,600 for consulting, to represent me through trial and post-trial judgment in a high-stakes family law case involving a critical life insurance issue. After trial, the court's Statement of Decision completely omitted that issue -- and for weeks, I begged her to file a proper objection. She refused, despite knowing the deadline and knowing my rights would be lost without action. Instead of fulfilling her duty, she repeatedly told me to "file it myself," even though I was legally prohibited from doing so while she remained my attorney of record. Her behavior placed me in a no-win situation and compromised my ability to protect my interests in court. She finally filed a Substitution of Attorney, but only after I had exhausted every effort to get her to act. What's worse -- the night before the post-trial brief was due, she sent me a draft filled with egregious errors that, if filed, would have amounted to perjury. I had personally paid for trial transcripts, which she clearly did not read or did not understand, and when I pointed out the factual errors, she became defensive and could not reformat my corrections into proper pleading paper. I have a recorded phone call where she tried, hours before the court deadline, to hurriedly correct these mistakes. This was despite the court having already given her extra time to do the job properly. The last-minute chaos caused unimaginable stress, and left me scrambling to protect myself as she backed away from her obligations. She continued to pressure me for more money, despite having been paid in full. This wasn't just bad service -- it was a breakdown of professional responsibility and a betrayal at a time when I was most vulnerable. Tamara Benefield has been disciplined by the State Bar of California, and (to my knowledge) does not carry malpractice insurance. That, combined with her conduct in my case, should be a red flag for anyone considering hiring her. I am now pursuing formal remedies. **Update** After this review posted last year, I was immediately contacted by Tamara (within hours) after not hearing from her for months. She accused me of defamation, and threatened to sue me for it. I didn't respond to any of her or her assistant Cherie's emails or threats. After months of requesting a statement, Cherie provided me with an invoice a few days after this review posted, showing all of the hours logged and billed. EVERY SINGLE HOUR LOGGED/BILLED WAS COMPLETELY AND LARGELY FALSE AND MADE UP. I could easily prove this by our email correspondence, text messages, and phone records within 5 minutes. This goes to show that they did absolutely ZERO work in making sure they were relaying or noting accurate information. Even knowing how I was lied to FLAT OUT, I still chalked it up as a loss and was just going to leave it at the reviews. Fast forward to the end of July 2018, I received an email from Tamara titled "MONEY BACK GUARANTEED" in which she agreed to pay me back a portion of my retainer in exchange for me deleting my reviews. Wanting to get it done and over with, I agreed, however I did not sign anything just yet. We were text messaging and the minute she was supposed to send me my refund, she immediately went ghost for weeks. She didn't answer or respond to a single email. When she finally did, she told me that she was having a contract drafted to get our agreement in writing before handing over my refund. And so I waited...and waited...and waited some more for this "agreement" that never came. After much frustration, I informed her that I would be filing an official complaint with the Bar and she took that as a threat and said she couldn't refund my money as a result lol. Fast forward to THIS WEEK (last correspondence was Aug/Sept, i believe)...she has now sent me another offer to refund some of my retainer in exchange for the deletion of my reviews. I counter offered for my full retainer (which is ONLY $500 more than her offer), because at this point, the headache of all of this is worth much more. She refused it and now here we are all over again! Since I've posted my review, a string of new reviews from multiple people with similar and almost EXACT experiences have come up and it honestly is frightening and downright sickening to see how many vulnerable people she has taken advantage of. The things you need to know about attorney Benefield. She was placed on 1 year probation I believe in 2021 for submitting untimely fee accounting for several cases (www.calbar.ca.gov). The first call you have with this woman is the most important. She is going to say everything you need to hear. Especially if your in a vulernable position. The next step before you can ever speak to her again will be her retainer. She charges $850/ hr and the retainer starts at 15k (so you're 15k in before your 2nd call). Once you pay that you're gonna meet who she really is. After a week or two expect to receive another bill and notice to replenish the retainer (another 10-15k). She's rude, impatient, she lies and is the most unprofessional attorney I've ever encountered. We had disagreement and she insulted me multiple times. She text me and my wife and called me "an ingrate" and told my wife "I was spiralling out of control and was gonna ruin my own life." lol. Mind you at this point I had known her for less than 3 weeks. When I hired a new attorney to take the case from her she started to threaten me. Then she emailed my new attorney and attached screenshots and emails between myself and her. She told my new attorney that "I was a spiraling out of control and needed help". She completely violated our attorney client privilege between myself and her. I will be filing a formal complaint with the State Bar of California. If there was an option to put zero stars I would there is absolutely nothing positive i can say about this crook and that is exactly what she is .my nightmare started in 2013 when she was recommended to me by an associate of hers that i confided in about the struggle of seeing my daughter and the issues I'm having with the mother of my child ,after a brief interview, she convinced me to retain her for a ridiculous amount, at the time I was working a lot of over time so I didn't see it as a issue to come up with that amount and before I met her I always believed you get what you pay for , I even looked her up on yelp where back then she had a stellar rating and reviews where all positive I know now that most of those where for sure doctored, sorry for the tangent ,back you the story well after retaining her we worked on the case a lot of times it was me showing up and waiting hours for her to even enter the building and when she did it was for a few minutes and she would have her assistant do the rest , and I get billed , of course, when I look back on it I did most of everything she or her assistant ( Mostly assistant I'm sure )just filed the proper paperwork , she showed up late to every court date and made little to no effort representing me , at that point in my custody battle I was drained mentally and financially I was offered 30-70 and the opportunity to revisit the case , I was told I had hours left over on my retainer I decided to revisit to get a fairer deal after meeting her again repeating more of the same , I was convinced to supplement another retainer ,as a single father that just wanted fair judgement and the opportunity to spend quality time and raise my daughter. So I retained her and things were much worse, I would email her call and sometimes even have to show up there to add information to my case in which I think would be beneficial to my custody battle she was never available. after trying several times to get in contact with her i demanded a refund via text and email, that's when I finally received a call in which It got nasty I was degraded and told she was doing me a favor and that I cannot afford her ,and refused to give me a refund I had never felt so small in my life , Here I am on the phone a single parent struggling to see my child depressed and stressed and this lawyer from Beverly Hills adds salt to an already wound by explaining how superior she is to me and bullied me into continuing with the court date because the refund was out of the question and state bar isn't gonna do anything to her she even went as far and sending me their information. I hired Tamara Feb2018 for a child custody and restraining order case from a referral. She built a good rapport with me being as she was pregnant, I was a new mom, and I felt as if she understood what I needed and how to get there. I am all about empowering women, especially supporting black women , so I took a chance and scavenged up the money to hire her. I paid a 7500 retainer fee. As a discount she told me I would receive her usual 500 hr service at 250 an hr. She was pregnant , but assured me she had just made 6months and would be present and available the duration of my case as she wasn't going on maternity leave until after the baby was born. That was a lie! At our next meeting ( just a couple weeks later) she told me she would be outsourcing me to someone else because she was going on maternity leave. What! After you take my money you give this info?! She asked if I was ok with that and I told her no but what choice do i have. I had hired her, and was paying the fees to have her as my representation not someone else! She should have never took on my case knowing full well she would be going on maternity leave within the next few weeks! UNETHICAL! Our first scheduled court date in March 2018 was initially to appear before a judge. However, we were just going to file continuance. Tamara and her assistant both showed up unprepared, and inappropriately dressed. Tamara's Assistant wore jeans ,open toe flip flops ,and a hoodie. Neither one of them had any of my case documents, I had to provide them all of my original filings just MINUTES before possibly having to appear a judge. She reviewed my entire case there in the courtroom. I could tell she had no knowledge of ANY of my case info as all the questions she was asking was about the docs and not preparing me for anything opposing party could possibly say or ask if continuance was not granted . We filed continuance and left. Later I was charged 1075 for "file review and court prep" the day BEFORE our court date when all parties were already aware of continuance. Also how could she review anything when they needed all my documents IN COURTROOM to review the following day?! I was also charged 3750 for this continuance that was filed billed at a full court appearance. 500 an hr for Tamara and 250 and hour for her assistant! Not the 250 I was supposed to be discounted.FRAUDULENT and OUTRAGEOUS charges. Tamara went out on maternity leave immediately after this continuance and was completely unresponsive for months ! I spent weeks blindingly forwarding info she previously said I needed. Couple of days before our next scheduled court appearance of In June 2018 I finally got some direction and documents through her assistant . One document stated my attorney fees being far more than my retainer amount of 7500. I refused to sign and asked for my billing statement as they had never once sent me any updates on my retainer throughout the duration of employment . I received a bill totaling 13182.50 for her services. 13,182.50 and NOT ONE COURT APPEARANCE! I responded via email and phone calls addressing my questions and concerns about the bill and she never responded. She then told me the DAY BEFORE court I needed to forward a payment of 2500 or she would not go to court . That night her assistant dropped off case documents along with new evidence from opposing party that they had received weeks before but never told me about. She nor anyone she was supposedly supposed to outsource me to appeared in court the next day! Nervous and embrassed I had to go before a judge the next day and explain why my lawyer wasn't there. It's all ON THE RECORD, and I am waiting for this judge to sanction her. I eventually had to settle my case prematurely to alleviate the stresses of court and it's Financial burden mainly due to this huge mistake I made in hiring Tamara. If your thinking of using her JUST DO IT YOURSELF! In the end, Tamara never explained the charges only that she never received the email. Also, going over the bill with opposing party representation, I've been made aware she billed me for conversations she never even had with their attorney! I have already filed my complaint with the CA state bar and hope you all do the same! It's a lot easier now you can just file online! Don't believe these fake referalls on yelp (as you can see none of the good reviews have any specifics on their case, ask for RECEIPTS!)or her bogus counter claims against the reviews she can't get deleted off!! read more

Paid her $25K, 9/1, she attended one hearing (said virtually nothing, leading me to believe she wasn't prepared for our case), she claimed she was at second hearing, although court Minute Order reflects No Appearance. And was a total no show at third hearing on 10/17. When I called her office right after the hearing, her assistant, Cherie, said the hearing wasn't even scheduled on their calendar. So she 'represented' us for about 6 weeks, made an appearance at ONE hearing, and charged us $9,020 without ever providing an invoice. I've filed a complaint with the CA Bar, waiting for result now. I also filed for Fee Arbitration with CA Bar and when date was set, she claimed she couldn't make it because she was in the hospital. Do not hire Tamara Benefield! She's on probation for money issues and I completely understand why after unfortunately hiring her to help with my domestic violence custody hearing. Originally I gave a 15k retainer and signed a contract stating a $500/hr rate. Several months later and after no real work from Tamara she thought we were in a place where I desperately needed her so she hit me with an amended hourly rate of $850/hr and a bill for almost another 8k. After confronting and telling her I will no longer be using her she forgave the almost 8k and accepted that I would be going forward without her. Based on the original contract and ballooned hours she billed for she technically still owes me close to 3k. I found an attorney through a domestic violence organization who fought for me and my son and who cared about our dangerous situation. If you want a lawyer that will fight for you with all their might, Tamara Benefield is the attorney to look for! She's a tigress in the courtroom and does not stop until she gets what she wants! She is the best at what she practices! She's not like most lawyers that is all about money. She truly and genuinely cares about you. She listens to you, knows your pain, comforts you, and reassures you that she'll take care of everything (which she really does, all the time!). She treats you like you're a close friend/family not a client. Which is really difficult to find from an attorney. I've had 2 attorneys prior to her and they do NOT even come close to the knowledge, experience, and passion she has. I definitely recommend her to anyone.
