Negatives: the food is very limited at the gates. Once you are through security and at the gates you realize you have to leave and completely exit to eat, then go back through security again once you are done. This would be extremely difficult for large groups or families traveling with children to go through security, then have to leave to eat a meal only to go back through security again. Horrible design.

Unlike a lot of metropolitan airports that have updated and renovated over the decades, Norfolk has retained the same aesthetic but it is a dependable airport. The terminals are clearly defined once inside. Where you go to check in is easy and stress free. There are food options both within the terminals past security check as well as before hand. It's fairly stress free where there was no terminal that is specifically overcrowded. While an international airport, Norfolk does have a regional feel that is not as full throttle. It certainly feels easier to navigate and not as cramped as say Asheville that is a regional airport. Overall, it was solid.

The airport is also located 8 nmi (15 km) west of Naval Air Station Patuxent River. It is owned and operated by the St. Mary's County Board of County Commissioners. St. Mary's County Regional Airport has been in operation since 1969. The airport was re-dedicated as the Captain Walter Francis Duke Regional Airport in 2000. It recently reverted to its original name. Trooper 7 flies medevacs all over the area including to as far north as Montgomery county and even in to northern Virginia. There is also a small flying club where people can learn to fly and rent planes to fly over the Chesapeake Bay. The St. Mary's Composite Squadron (MER-MD-089) of the Civil Air Patrol [meets at the terminal building and bases their aircraft there, as well. CAP's primary missions in the community include aerial and ground search and rescue. The local squadron is about 100 members strong, including senior members and cadets. The St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce has its offices in the terminal building of the airport. The EAA also meets there.

tl;dr: Don't fly Southwest at this airport…read more The Southwest Terminal (Terminal 1) at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is one of the worst airport terminals I've experienced. The biggest problem is the layout. Once you pass through TSA in Terminal 1, you're essentially stuck there. Unlike many airports where you can walk between concourses after security, Terminal 1 is separated from the newer terminals. If you want access to other dining or amenities, you have to leave the secure area and go through TSA all over again. The food options are also disappointing. There are a couple of sit-down restaurants, such as Reservoir and Page, but most of the terminal consists of food court-style vendors with very limited seating. Finding a place to comfortably sit and eat can be a challenge, especially during busy travel periods. What really makes the experience frustrating is how crowded the terminal becomes when flights are delayed. Since Southwest operates heavily from Terminal 1, delays can quickly turn the gate areas into standing-room-only spaces. The terminal feels undersized for the number of passengers using it, and at times the congestion borders on uncomfortable. It's definitely a fire hazard and panic attack inducing. Part of the issue is that Terminal 1 is the airport's oldest terminal, dating back to the 1940s. While it has some historic character, it was not designed for modern passenger volumes and it shows. The only major advantage of Reagan National is its location. Being just minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. and Arlington is incredibly convenient. If proximity to the city is your top priority, it's hard to beat. But if you're flying Southwest through Terminal 1, be prepared for limited amenities, crowding, and a less-than-ideal airport experience. By the way, if there is any kind of event in D.C. expect the traffic here to be horrendous and good luck getting a Lyft. What a clusterf*ck.
