So, I walked in for my appointment and said. "I'd like to get a fade. You know, about so long on top [indicates about an 1/2 in with thumb and finger] maybe a number four [tilts head questioningly] down to skin or a zero." After the cut, I asked "This hair is all one length. I wanted a fade. What happened." My hair is now about 1/8th in long. He replied, "You just can't see it because your hair is salt and pepper." I felt my head. He replied, "Well I can take the bottom down more but it will be short." So after a total of an hour and a half, I ask "So how do I get a cut that's longer on top and tapered down to the skin?" I point at the guy next to me as an example. He says, "Oh tell them you want a comb-over so you can lay the top hair down." I felt sorry for the guy and tipped him but I really wish I hadn't. Booked several days in advanced with Eduardo. I show up 15 min ahead of my appointment and only after 11 do I realize the guy isn't even there. Then speaking with him on the phone he blames me saying he tried to text and call, but I never got any call or message indicating it was Eduardo trying to reach out. His only attempt is described below. The guy texts me saying "hi antheny" with out any introduction or indication of who it was or why they were reaching out so I took it as spam and deleted the text. Then I get another text randomly the day of saying "??? Your appointment is cancelled". No calls ever. When I explained to him that he should introduce himself when sending random texts he just says "your appointment is cancelled bye". I can't speak for the other barbers but would not recommend booking it Eduardo. read more

It's very hard to find a new barber when you have one that you know and trust with your hair! Unfortunately my barber moved and I had to go around random hair cut places just to get a cut that was nothing special. I found Tangier's and thought to give it a shot and was definitely NOT let down! Made an appointment easily through yelp as I just shot out that I needed a haircut and someone texted me back availability. Awesome! I setup an appointment and came later that week. The shop is in Costa Mesa and very cool looking and clean with a retro vibe. I met Danny who asked me exactly what I wanted. Told him what I was looking for but since my hair he grown so long some of it was difficult to see like where my old fade was. Showed him some recent pics of what my hair was like and he took it from there. Danny is an absolute perfectionist which is a good thing to have as a barber! He gave me the perfect cut I needed and gave me all the pampering at the end like a hot towel and after shave since I asked for a close fade. Matt was incredible! I'm someone who gets a cut every month or two, and got my hair cut by Matt a couple weeks ago. The best cuts I've ever gotten have always continued to look great weeks later, and I'm still so confident and happy with the way my hair looks after visiting Tangiers. He put so much time and effort into It. I will say that you should set aside an hour or two when visiting, but it is absolutely worth it. I scheduled an appointment here on Yelp. The day of my appointment the barber texts me to ask to push my appointment to a later date. When I showed up at the later date at the agreed upon time, I was asked to wait over 30 minutes. Once I got into the chair, the barber spent more time texting on his phone than he spent cutting my hair. I was completely ignored. The television was so loud, I was unable to successfully communicate with the barber what I wanted. The haircut ended up fine, but overall a very awkward and awful experience. read more

I check back the confirmation is gone, probably cause I checked for it 20 minutes after he was supposed to be there. I checked the reviews, other people had this problem. This place is a joke, they book me at 4pm, and acted like they weren't even aware that I was booked. Keep in mind I'm a first time client. They end up double booking me, unorganized, unprofessional and no sympathy for doing it. They asked me to wait 30 minutes, I know haircuts take much longer and am on a tight schedule. When instead they should've just made their regular client wait and start business off with a new client on a good note. I'm typically one to tip well if business is good, not how I would run my business. Left a bad taste in my mouth the way they treat their first time clients. Won't be back unless they can acknowledge their mistake and make up for it. Edit: also not happy to support this place since the owner seems like a sarcastic prick when replying to all comments. I've been following Damien around since he started cutting hair, when he was an apprentice and at other barber shops before tangiers. He's always had a lot of talent, but at Tangiers he flourishes. The environment at tangiers is next level, all the barbers are clean, stylish, and friendly. The products that they use have wonderful aromas and your hair always comes out looking great. A few months ago I told Damien after 4 years of him cutting my hair that I was trans. I didn't know how he would react, but he was so chill about it, more than even some of my friends. He doesn't treat me any differently than he did before, just changed how he addressed me and used my new pronouns. I'm really happy with how welcoming tangiers has always been. Sometimes old school barber shops can be a little hostile to women and members of the LGBT community but not Tangiers. It's all good vibes and quality care. It may cost a little more than your standard haircut, but you get what you pay for x2. It's totally worth it. I highly reccomend this place, and Damien especially. read more

Hands down best decision I've made since moving in the area! I am a bald guy, but I care about my beard. Rob is the man when it comes to making men look good! Super friendly, and down to earth guy. Very honest, and not pushy! Wore a mask the whole time so I felt safe due to Covid! I'm going to be seeing Rob on a regular basis now. Super excited to find a great barber shop near me! This place is super laid back and very accommodating to your needs. This was my second visit and I'll definitely be back! Love the vibe here, not to mention, they are meticulous when it comes to lining up the sides. The first hairdresser I had was Daniel and today's visit I had Michael, both were extremely detail-oriented and neither of them made me feel awkward for preferring not to talk the entire time :) I have to be fully engaged at my day job so to have a haircut where I don't have to engage with anyone and I'm not made to feel awkward for not talking is always a plus. I have been going to Tangiers Barber shop for almost 2 years now and thought I would finally leave a review. I have been getting my haircut at several different places throughout the last 35 years here in Costa Mesa, from Supercuts to different salons and now, I stay with Tangiers. I had heard that it is a " guys" place to go and a unique experience, and it did not disappoint. Upon arrival, the shop has really cool decor with a very eclectic mixture of art work with a Mexican- goth saloon type vibe to it and great music playing. You are greeted usually by one of the barbers and are offered an adult beverage, if you would like, while you wait. The shop is small, but that adds to the entertaining banter between the staff. I have had a few different barbers, but my favorite is Robert. He is always very friendly and does an amazing job cutting my hair! It is reasonably priced and I look forward to going there for a great cut and fun experience. I would highly recommend Tangiers! read more

A really nice, relaxing place to get the haircut you want. This was the first haircut I had after COVID & was experiencing significant hair loss. The barber did a fine job of rescuing my hair, which was starting to look like a Doc Brown hairstyle. I was pleasantly surprised when he offered me a beer before the haircut. Only a couple things - They do charge $40 or more for a haircut, in addition to anything else you want done. This is about double other local barber shops, but then, you get what you pay for. Gave a good haircut the first time I went so I decided to call for an appointment again. I had missed an earlier appointment during the weekend due to a debilitating migraine and so when I called to make another appointment for today, the guy answering the phone hung up on me after I told him my name and now it keeps going to voicemail. I can see the owner keeps leaving snarky retorts to bad reviews but it might help him more to just put more effort into customer service. The staff of barbers are classic men, dressed the part, communicate the part (as questions first, then give opinion of the best option of the cut based on amount of hair, hair density, facial size/shape and goals).
