Having taught ballroom and social dancing for over 50 years never have I witness a dance instructor such as Maribai. She is very bright, full of positive energy, just walking into the class her presents demands everyone's attention. She is like a great orator with an abundance of contagious enthusiasm she gathers everyone attention with her presents, planting her feet, explaining to the class with large gestures perfectly executed movements, making transitions, followed with a demo, Pausing, making random eye contact . Speaks as if talking to you personally, using large slow or quick leg or foot flirtations and explaining them so that a beginning student understands what is expected. While encouraging advanced dancers to fine tune for profection . Musicality is not like teaching step patterns. It take a special gift to teach musicality and Argentine will challenge the best of the best. Maribai is a master instructor with that special gift of teaching musicality. It's a joy to watch her demonstrate movements to tango music as if to challenge to you to master. I have never seen a teacher have so much fun and respect for her dance partner(s) or fellow instructors. Tantalizing Tango! After a year and a half of group and private lessons, with only modest progress, I decided to take the leap with Mirabai, and am I happy that I did. At first I was naturally intimidated learning the subtleties of the close embrace from a beautiful international star Tanguera. But her warm joyful personality soon put me at ease. Mirabai has an encyclopedic knowledge of the hundreds of different patterns and styles of tango, and executes all with grace and precision. She fuses art with science as she is an amazing dancer with an amazing understanding of what really is involved in turning steps into the beautiful flow of dancing the Tango. Underlying the technique is her deep understanding of the music, how it carries and infuses the dance with nuance and passion. Her approach with me is to build (or rebuild) the foundation upon which all tango is based, not just demonstrate steps. Her axiom is "Revere the Axis" both your partner's and your own. She provides regular feedback on frame, posture, attitude, walking, and collection, while always reminding me to really let the music in, to be patient, quiet, graceful and creative. I decided to learn to Blues Dance with 60 friends at my 50th birthday party. Mirabai was the first teacher I talked to about coming to the party for a private group class. From the start she was a joy to work with. She offered to give us a short performance to "wow" and inspire us then teach us a few simple moves. I got such a good vibe on the phone that I didn't need to call anyone else Mirabai surpassed all my expectations. She was a complete pro from start to finish and just radiated joy, warmth, and ease. Her enthusiasm for dance was so contagious that she got everybody inspired before she even performed. But then when she did it was pure sizzle. She danced with her boyfriend (because the dance partner she thought she was bringing threw his back out that morning) and even though he was a decent partner dancer it didn't matter. She could have made a broomstick look good. We were mesmerized and ready to do whatever she told us when it was our turn. At one point in the lesson I looked up and saw that the whole yard was filled and every single person was dancing and having a great time. I was captivated by Mirabai's versatility and precision at the Argentine Tango Championship in SF. I only stayed a week in San Francisco and was interested in taking private Tango classes. After some research I contacted Mirabai and did not know anything about her except for a short glimpse of her homepage, which impressed me and made me fear that she might be fully booked, have no time and be hard to reach. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Not only did Mirabai respond within two hours but made room for the most amazing classes I had in a long time. Fun, focused and charming, Mirabai gives you the feeling to shine, no matter what your level of Tango might be. I had three years of experience but my sister - an absolute beginner - rose to a level not hoped for if it was not for Mirabai. Specific to Argentine Tango, she has amazing musicality and calls your attention to every detail from every era of tango music, from the '40s classics to contemporary orchestras. Since she leads as well as follows, she can describe pretty much any aspect of leading or following technique and most importantly, tunes it to the evolving capabilities of her audience. I've been taking blues dancing lessons with Mirabai for 3 months, and the experience has been transformative. Previously, dancing had always been something I had avoided. I had started taking Argentine Tango lessons about 15 yrs ago but never could really learn anything as the teachers were disorganized and unable to teach it even though they, themselves, could dance well, so I finally just quit. I really love this dance and decided to try again about a year ago and was lucky enough to find Mirabai . My private lessons with her are just fabulous. I have recently joined Mirabai's tango formation group which performed in July 2013. Not only is she an excellent and graceful dancer, but also a wonderful dance teacher! I appreciated the instructions, the vision of the dance moves, the fun choreography, her patience is just enough to be firm yet still encouraging, and the challenge for the students to achieve more than they think. Finding the "right" tango coach is a little like finding the "right" life-partner. The qualities that make a good fit differ from person to person -- it's definitely not one-size-fits-all. That said, I can't imagine that anyone who works with Mirabai walks away with anything but adoration for the woman. Incredibly supportive, warm, CONNECTED -- she'll work your technique as deep as you want to go, but she never lets it get in the way of dancing. I have been taking classes with Mirabai at the CPAA studios in San Jose for nearly a year. She is an extraordinary teacher and dancer! Few teachers would show this type of dedication to Argentine Tango: she went to Argentina for five years to study the dance, culminating in a competitive performance where she was ranked in the top ten tango dancers in the world! Mirabai is wonderful. She helped my husband and I choreograph our "first dance" for our wedding. With Mirabai's help we not only had a beautiful "first dance" we had SO MUCH FUN creating it with her. Mirabai's recent performance in the Mundial competition ( BA Sept 2016) was a show stopper. The emotion was palpable and the dancing dazzling!!!
