I was told my car would take 4 days and it took 4 weeks. I called several times for updates and the manager kept saying he would look into it and call me back which he never did. I told them that if my transmission was going out I didn't want to put money into the car and they said it was the transfer case. I paid $3,000 for the transfer case to be replaced along with fixing some other small things only to find out the transmission was indeed going out too. Upon getting a second opinion the other company said the work on my transfer case was unprofessional and that the bolts weren't even tightened. I giving tanner in sunset and bad review. Took my truck in driving and got it back broken and couldn't drive it home. First they burned the clutch out and then on top of that they broke something inside the transmission. I pulled it my self and found that the pilot bearing was what was making the noise 27.99 at auto zone now im paying out 1500. To have my transmission rebuilt. I will never trust tanner again. This is after paying $2K and still getting the TCS warning light that was the reason for taking it to this jerk in the first place. Blaine is terrible at communication and won't return calls. They called us yesterday at around noon and by 2:00 it was literally on fire. Engine compartment completely destroyed. Please support me on this effort to make this right. Before doing that I thought I'd try changing the solenoid on the transmission. $50 later my transmission was running like new and still is running perfectly after a few months. My mom also went in to get her transmission checked and they said she needed a rebuild when the only problem was the fluid was a little low. I wish I'd paid more attention to all of the negative reviews before taking my car here. My car was experiencing hesitation when under load/going uphill. I'd had two other companies try to diagnose the problem with no certainty. I brought it to Tanner on State Street to get a third opinion. After spending $4500 for a rebuilt transmission and receiving a warranty, I took it for a test drive around the block and felt that it was okay. The next day, however, when I drove uphill, I found it was doing the same thing. I brought it back and was told that since it was now under warranty, they would fix it and told me they would pay for a rental for up to $30.00 per day. When the car was ready six days later (it wasn't the transmission, but a faulty solenoid) I picked it up and gave them a copy of my rental car receipt. After hearing nothing for some time, I went back in to ask about my reimbursement. I was told that "they" were not happy with having to pay the reimbursement because "all they had done for me." I left another copy of the rental car bill and was told again to expect repayment. Having received nothing, I am now preparing a case for small claims court. All of this for a mere $180. Over 4 whopping months later when I got my vehicle back it came with damages I didn't leave it there with. They ran someone else's car into my car 3 different times. My trunk had a huge dent in it from a black car & my passenger door was backed into with a red car & a black car. They didn't say shit about it, Nor attempted to fix it. A month later, (Today). My transmission still is not right. It's worse. I drove my car into Tanner Transmission as it had a ticking sound, they diagnosed the problem immediately saying it was the clutch plate, 100% sure, and would be an easy inexpensive fix. I left the car and they then said it needed a rebuild, not so inexpensive. I went ahead with this and get the car back, almost $3,000 later, and the transmission is not corresponding with the dashboard computer, I can't see the temperature of the transmission. Jim, the manager, says you didn't ask me to ensure the transmission was corresponding to the computer. Really, you have to ask? He says it drives, doesn't it? The car also had a new funny vibration. Jim didn't care, so I asked the mechanic that worked on the car, he crawled under the car and pulled out a big 2X4 board (they use it to brace the tranny and had accidentally left it there? I had planned on selling this car, now I am not sure how to sell it when the dashboard clearly says there is a problem? I called the owner, Blain Tanner, he quickly says I am sorry, of course, you don't have to ask, that's silly, let me get back to you. I never hear from him. When I call him back, Blain tells me he has never heard of a car that the dashboard is connected to the transmission? Really Blain? And this is not their concern. Terrible terrible service. Don't go here. I went to them exactly a year ago with a Volvo that needed a new transmission. They offered to tow it in for free to take a look at what it needed. Should have known a crook when I heard this. They put in a battery without telling me, then wanted to charge me for it saying they couldn't have looked at the problems without a new battery. After about two weeks of being there, they had the new transmission in so I went to go pick it up. I took it for a stroll around the block and there was some weird clicking noise. I asked the manager about it ( I think his name was ken, who continued to call me bud and comment that they are going to take care of me throughout the whole process), and he commented that it was normal and I shouldn't worry. It's just the new transmission and after driving it around the kinks should leave.We paid them ( so glad we did it on an American Express) and left. After driving it for about 3 hours ( the clicking never stopped) the car died on me in the middle of a busy street. I called them ( I was probably about 10-15 blocks from where they were located) for them to come tow it and they said they couldn't, all the tow trucks were being used. So I pushed it the 10-15 blocks to the location and told them this is ridiculous and they need to fix it. He asked if I heard anything or saw any leaks when I was driving and I reminded him about the click to which his response was: oh ya that could be bad, let's take a look. I left the Volvo there and just left the place. Didn't want to deal with it anymore. We cancelled the payment with the AMEX, and A few weeks later we spoke again and they said we owed them money. I agree we owed them a little bit, but I walked out of there without a thing for the money I would have spent. So we just left the Volvo down there as compensation. This place will screw you over. Miserable experience. 16 trips to the same shop to resolve a transmission issue that I'm still experiencing. My car has been dropped off at least twice without receiving any attention. I wish I was exaggerating, but I started to document the experience on Instagram because it was becoming such a joke with my fellow car friends. The owner is defensive and abrasive over the phone, and doesn't create a positive experience that makes me want to trust his shop's work. They take shortcuts to handle a lack of management (someone was fired halfway through my repair), and this has been the most stressful experience I've ever had with any company with my life. THE GOOD - They really saved me a bunch of money. I couldn't get my transmission past 3rd or 4th gear, and thought I would have to replace the whole transmission. But they repaired it for me for about 200 dollars. That was probably 3 or 4 months ago and I haven't had any problems with it since then. THE BAD - The communication is lacking. They didn't give me much information, and they never called me to give me an update like they said they would. I had to call in 3 different times to find out what was going on, when it would be ready, and what the pricing looked like. My nightmare With Tanner Transmissions, started on 9/12/2018, at their Sunset, UT. location. It was on that date, in accordance with the service and maintenance schedule for my vehicle, that I stopped in for a "transmission flush", for my 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, Prior to that date, there was absolutely no problems or leaks with either the vehicle or vehicle transmission.... They proceeded with the Flush, while in their waiting room, I was asked to come to the back shop, where I was directed into the shop pit, and observed black oil all over the transmission and a five gallon pail with pitch black oil that they said was drained from my transmission. Both of which I did not understand, but foolishly I believed them. Even though, My garage floor where the vehicle spends most of it time, did not have one drop of oil under the parking spot and there was absolutely no problems with the shifting or operation of the car or transmission prior to that point.. I questioned them as to why the company that has changed the motor oil since the vehicle was brand new always checked the transmission oil as being full and OK. This question generated a quick response from him, that he would put the black oil back in the vehicle and I could be on my way.... It was at that time I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life, both financially and regretfully by agreeing to let him proceed. As of this date, the nightmare continues, although their last attempt (11) did eliminate some of the "banging" problems, the vehicle now has a rather loud rattle underneath. Lets keep in mind that during the last five months they have had possession of the vehicle over 2.5 months which included weeks of "test drives". In that time period, never once did they call, text or e-mail me of any status. (even though Jim Tanner, gave me his word that he would follow up with me.) One of their invoices included a note, " Transmission Bangs in reverse, delivered hoping they wouldn't notice, but they did." this statement was the result of writing the note to their home office and writing it on top of my invoice, unbeknownst to them...... I could fill another page or so quoting the falsehoods and outright lies that I endured during this traumatic five months. I now have a vehicle that operates worse than when I left it with them, been without a vehicle for 2.5 months. $3917.63 less in my checking account.( includes 2 front end alignments.)....Also, FYI Tanner Transmission uses only one fluid fits all. NOT COOL. Chevrolet voids the warranty on any fluid other than Dexron. That is another conversation I had with Jim Tanner that produced 0 positive results. IN SHORT, CHECK THE UTAH BBB RATING FOR TANNER TRANSMISSION. (they are not members for obvious reasons.) BUT CHECK IT ANYWAY, BE SAFE NOT SORRY. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS FIRM TO ANYONE. IT IS MY STRONG OPINION THAT THEY SQUAIRTED THE BLACK FLUID ON THE TRANSMISSION TO MAKE IT LOOK AS THOUGH IT WAS LEAKING AND FURTHER THAT THE OIL THEY SHOWED ME WAS NOT FROM MY VEHICLE. IT IS ALSO MY OPINION THAT THEY REMOVED MY GOOD TRANSMISSION AND REPLACED IT WITH ONE THAT THEY REMOVED FROM SOME OTHER VEHICLE. I got my transmission re-built on my 2005 Ford F-150 4 years ago and have put less then 5,000 miles on it. It has already broke and they won't stand by their 5 year "warranty". There service manager in Draper was very unprofessional. Got angry with me to think that I would suggest that they should stand by their work and fix the problem. They said I hadn't brought my truck to get serviced enough, which I did for 3 years and they only recorded 1 year. Are you kidding me??? There intent is not to uphold their warranty that has a thousand outs on their part. That transmission should have lasted for 10 to 15 years or more if done correctly. Salt Lake State Street Location: My 1996 Explorer transmission started slipping and I started checking around for prices on a tranny replacement. Typical price was around 1700.00 for the work with warrantys. I was thinking of buying one kout of Arizona for around 950.00 and installing it myself. Decided in the essence of time I would have it done by someone else. Bad mistake!!!! Called a few shops 1700 was pretty common price. Saw an ad for tanners on TV which somewhat impressed my since they could Dyno test it. I was quoted over the phone for 1700.00. Took it in and told them max was 1900. They told me they were not one of those shops that tell you a price then you get a 2500 bill. They told me this specifically. However there is a 850 or so teardown charge. Well I get that dreaded phone call and was informed that they found 2 other parts that need replacing, total cost 2350.00 plus tax. Teardown already started.....This car had almost 200,000 miles on it and they didn't have clue what parts go bad in it.....Well they had it for a week, bill was around 2500.00, and I even mentioned there comment about others raising their prices.. Then I find out there warranty only covers it if you bring it back to them and them only. . All the other shops had a nationwide warranty...So if you break down out of state, you have to get it towed back to Tanners....Well long story short,it had a 12 month warranty, at 11 months I took it back due to something wrong and it was not working right. They kept it 3 WEEKS.....3 WEEKS......I called every week to get some excuse, claimed once the only had 1 mechanic (they had 10-20 cars in their shop), ....They claimed they found one little part, supposedly. If I knew how to rebuild a tranny, I can guarantee you I would do it in a heart beat...next time I'll install a rebuilt one myself. Done it before.. Lessons Learned: Advertising can be deceiving, shop looks great on the TV, but the shop was a dump... Warranty work the worst, 3 Weeks wait, no out of state coverage!!!! Actions speak a lot louder than words. Blaine says they want to make it right and get it fixed. But I had to go back again, because I still had a leak after they fixed it. So this time they say that the leak is due to a problem with the pan, and that it's leaking from the "Neutral Switch", and of course, "Those aren't covered by the warranty." Maybe it's because you have messed with my transmission so much now that you caused the issue. These people are crooks! I have no idea how an honest person would work at this place. Took my 2002 Ranger to Tanner in Sunset for a new clutch. That was Sept 2012. Spent over $1,400.00, thought I was set for life. Wrong. Had to have the clutch replaced again. Only 90 day warranty on labor. Paid nearly $300.00 labor. Clutch started chattering again. Took it somewhere else. There is procedure required to adjust the pressure plate prior to assembly. It is printed right on the part. I have the used part clearly showing premature wear. Tanner left a message on my cell today. Owner basically said how sad, to bad. They have an F rating with the Better Business Bureau and a consumer advisory against them. Buyer Beware. Cannot recommend Tanner Transmission. New repair warrantied 24 K miles and 2 years. These guys have a F rating from the Better Business Bureau for a reason. They put the wrong transmission fluid in my car - this is basically a death sentence for my transmission. My transmission had been fine, but was overdue for a fluid change. I had a power flush done on my Ford, and they told me my car used a Toyota transmission, which sounded weird. After driving for 5 miles my car started shifting hard, and when I got home later I did some research. They wrote down on my receipt that my transmission as a TF-81sc, which is not only NOT the transmission used on my car (6f35), it isn't even used in Toyotas. They also said they added Lubeguard for Honda or Toyota... The transmission they said my car has (TF-81sc) isn't used in either Hondas and Toyotas. It uses a completely different transmission fluid than what my car needs, and then they added a fuel additive that isn't compatable with either transmission. Even if my car had the TF-81sc transmission, the additive was totally wrong for it! They also broke my trans fluid dipstick so I couldn't check my fluid levels - they removed the lomg metal part completely. I had checked the fluid levels before bringing my car in, so I know it was broken whike it was at the shop. Malice or incompetence? Either way it doesn't matter. Stay away from Tanner Transmission. I also found out a friend brought his car into Tanner Transmissions just to be looked at for a quick diagnosis. They took his transmission apart without telling him, and then they refused to let him have his car back until he paid them $600 to put it back together without fixing it. They wouldn't even let him have his car back to be towed to another shop. These guys are super friendly in person & on the phone, but it's a ruse. Don't fall for it. I had to bring my car to the dealership, where they confirmed that I had the 6f35 transmission. The dealership replaced the fluid with the correct type, and my car has been fine since. read more

BEWARE!!!!!!! In September 2017 I had my transmission replaced at the Sunset Utah location. Sign said $.1599 for 4x4 they charged $1799. Plus labor in excess of $1300 after quote of $2600 total. Their website and all literature show 5 year 100000 mile warenty. On paperwork they crossed that out and wrote 3 year 3600 miles. Took it back to be " checked out" witch consisted of manager asking if there was any leaks on my driveway. Several hundred miles later and on the first freeway travel the transfer case blew up. Stranded on the side of the freeway just inside Arizona at 3 AM the morning of Thanksgiving. Roadside towed it to the closest shop which was St George Utah. Owner of the business which has been in business for more than 25 years told be the transfer case had been removed and put back without re filling the fluid and all of the mounting bolts were only hand tightened. Causing a "Catastrophic Failure". He was not told Tanner had replaced the transmission. Repair and other costs incurred on a holiday weekend in excess of $2000 Blain Tanner, owner would not take or return my numerous calls. NO INTEGRITY!!!! Warranty very carefully worded that if you have any issues they will not stand behind it! Warranty not worth the price of paper its printed on. Avoid them at all cost. Very poor workmanship, no integrity, deceptive billing and a worthless piece of paper they call a waranty. Please warn anyone you know. YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF!!!! They will telly you anything to get you to sign for their repair the rob you blind and walk away leaving you holding the bag when it fails!
