This is one of the few Mexican grills in Waco that is closest to authentic Mexican food (NOT Tex Mex). I have tried many other "Mexican" restaurants in Waco and they are not close to authentic, however, the Taqueria El Mexicano Grills are. Seating inside can be a bit awkward if it's a busy night and you are seated in the middle of the restaurant since the tables are pretty much crammed up. The plate of Enchiladas was good. I will definitely be trying this restaurant more often to try other plates. I think their drinks are also very good, I got the frozen strawberry margarita. Our server brought out some extra sweet syrup in case we thought it was too strong. Service was fast and our server was very nice. read more

I can only rate the food as I ordered delivery. The food was decent. Probably would be quite a bit better if I had it there. That's why I did add a star. Since I was about 15 minutes away. The queso was very flavorful. You have a choice of white or yellow. The Torta was good. I added refried beans. It was much bigger than I expected. This was my first experience. People discussed value in the reviews. I think the Torta and the queso were a pretty good value. They actually gave me a ton of salsa and chips four bags chips. The red salsa was good. If you don't care for cilantro you might not care for it. The green salsa was good on food IMO but I didn't care to dip chips in it. It was pretty strong. The plate I did feel was a bit overpriced. The carne on the side was very good. I found the beans rice and enchiladas average. They were average here but in another city would probably be ranked a bit higher. I actually ordered here by mistake but it was pretty decent. If I was in the area I probably would go back here and try the restaurant. read more

Visited the place for lunch about 10 days ago. The food was good, like the ambiance but service was non-existent. Our server was very friendly to the customers that she knew and was very chatty with them but we had to chase her down to place an order to ask for a box at the end of the meal and never did she check on us during the meal if everything was ok, nor did she offer refills. It was a bummer because it really was a disappointing experience. Service is big part of the restaurant visit and it surely needed much improvement. :( read more

Just a nice place that Wacoans love! The staff are quick and friendly. Food is delicious and really reasonably priced, especially their lunch specials. They have the best Spanish rice -- it is so flavorful and rich! My favorite thing is that they give you a tasty bean dip with the chips and salsa included. The margaritas are pretty big too. Ordered the Chimichanga and 2 Tacos Barbacoa Al Pastor I had the 2 sauces on the side and wanted the Chimichanga dry with guacamole. They served exactly what I ordered and the Chimichanga was huge and could not finish it. I tried the 2 sauces that it came with and the guacamole. I just like the tortilla a little bit more crispy. The tacos were good and I prefer the Barbacoa meat over the Al Pastor. Good size with plenty of meat, these are not street taco size. The chips were meh, Coke was flat. Service was very good. I've eaten lunch here so many times in the past and breakfast in the mornings with friends. I don't particularly like the place because the food is mid, and the building is old and nobody would accuse it of cleanliness... especially the bathrooms, but locals like it and it was never so bad that I'd refused to eat there. Basically if a group of friends votes to go there, I choose not to fight them on it. Cut to today... I went to lunch with my family there and ordered the guisada plate and some flour tortillas for the baby. I reached in to get a tortilla out of the warmer and there was a WHOLE BITE taken out of it with TEETH MARKS! Some other guest's tortillas ended up on my table after they left! Reheated and served alongside my guisada. We didn't make a big deal out of it. I gave them to our waitress, who saw the bite and immediately apologized, then offered to get us the manager. The manager took all her sweet time coming over, didn't even see the tortillas because the waitress had taken them and proceeded to explain to us that it was a tear, not a bite. As if we couldn't tell the difference. We asked her to comp my meal and we'd pay for the rest. Instead she chose to give us a generous (sarcasm) $6 discount on our whole ticket! If there wasn't a bite taken out, we would never have known those tortillas were on another guest's table. Needless to say, my family and I will never eat there again. I just wish I'd had the forethought to take a picture before I left the waitress take the tortillas. read more

My best friend and I went to eat there on a Sunday. This is the one on Valley Mills Dr. The hostess was not friendly, I asked for a booth instead of a table, because I'm having back issues and the table chairs hurt my back. The hostess said she couldn't give us a booth because of the seating chart, but there were a few open and others were sitting in booths, though most were crammed in the center at tables. She took us to the table, I couldn't sit there it hurt my back. We decided to leave and as we got to the hostess area, she asked what was our problem. I told her couldn't sit there, it hurt too bad and she said ok. She couldn't care less, cause she shrugged. We left and will not be back. She was rude and her behavior was unacceptable. We decided to try the one in Hewitt, they were packed and the hostess there found us a booth. The food was good and they were friendly. I will eat at the one in Hewitt again. This is our favorite mexican restaurant here in Waco. It probably is the best place for mexican food around. Cleanliness is a 3. It is pretty clean except the restrooms are left unattended most of the times. Service is a 2. I understand when it is busy the wait will be longer than usual. But to not be seen for a good 20 minutes or more is kind of outrageous. We will see our waitress when she drops off our chips. Then 20 minutes later ask for our order and another 20 minutes when she brings our food we'll never see her again till it is time for billing. Maybe they're shorthanded but need to learn how to juggle your tables more efficiently. Food is a 4. Definitely good. If it wasn't for the food we would probably never come here. As far as i've tried, this is the best in town. Price is a 4. A bit better than everybody else and serving sizes are pretty good. All in all we like the place. Food and price is great. We waited about 45min for our food until I asked the waitress how much longer she went in the kitchen came back within a minute brought my food out and said we are still waiting on the tacos my food was kinda cold but my husband said just eat them cause we are thinking the tacos should be out anytime, about 10 min later the tacos are still not out and everyone else is getting food around us. After searching thru our beloved Yelp!, we landed at this place. The interior is pretty decent, simple, quite big but a little outdated. The nice host seated us to the first booth in the middle section. Chips and salsa were great. They taste fresh and flavorful. Our server lady took our drink order. Typically I would order iced tea with my Mexican feast but I have had enough of caffeine of a day so I sticked with water. If you mind with tap water taste, please request for an extra lemon. That's what I did but I had to requested couple times, which brings me to the service topic. Our server wasn't the best one. She didn't write our orders yet she forgot few things we requested and extra lemon was one of them. And seemed like everytime she stopped by our table, she was in a hurry while the restaurant wasn't even busy, yet, we were there during early dinner (5pm). On top of that, I saw a couple of waitresses just standing there on their phones and giggling. Hmmm? For our meal, I ordered fried whole tilapia. Menu said it comes with rice and fries. I requested with no fries and double rice, simple request yet the server brought me rice and beans. I really enjoyed my dinner. Fried to perfection and not greasy at all. Rice was incredible! So tasty and fluffed perfectly. No comment on the beans since I've never a big fan of it. The BF ordered one of their dinner plates, if I'm not mistaken it's called gorditos plate. It contains beef crunchy taco, cheese enchilada and chili releno. He enjoyed his plate. Random thing I found is they have a vending machine inside the restaurant. I am talking about snack vending machine not a gum ball machine. I obviously not impressed with the service but don't worry folks, we still tipped her accordingly. We have been here many of time I always forget to do a review I had the Bistec Ranchero which is chunks of steak cooked with tomatoes onions and jalapenos peppers. Side: Rice and cactus strips with flour tortillas. My daughter had the Fajita Nachos which is your choice of meat (she had the chicken and steak) served with beans sour cream guacamole and jalapenos. I enjoyed my food very much so plus that's all I ever get when we come here. My daughter did not enjoy the nachos this go around the chips were stale so she sent her food back (1st time ever) and got what I had. I used this place while traveling because I saw they had a discount on Restaurant.com. That requires a minimum purchased price of $10 but the waitress kept telling me that I must purchase $15. I showed her in black and white what it said and she still refused to honor it. I called and talked to a Restaurant.com representative and he told me that I was correct and that needed to accept it. The waitress then walked to another person, that person didn't want to talk to the representative so she passed my phone to another waitress who spoke better English. By that time, I was embarrassed and no longer wished to eat there. I walked to the bar where all three were with my phone, got my phone, told the representative to refund my money and that I was put in a very embarrassing situation and that I wanted Restaurant.com to know that this establishment isn't honoring what people are paying. The representative said he will conduct a bad review and encourage me to do the same. By far the worst, rude, and most unprofessional staff I've ever dealt with. If they don't want to honor coupons, they shouldn't advertise or put them on reputable places such as Restaurant.com I'm glad I didn't eat there with those rude and money hungry ladies! read more

I visited this place during happy hour with a friend. We ordered beers and an appetizer to share. Their server did not bring extra plates or napkins. When it was time for more beer, we had to ask another server to get it for us and asked for another appetizer. I also wanted water, but the waiters were in so much a hurry, that I never had the chance to ask for it. When I told the waiter it would be separate checks, he rolled his eyes at me. Our waitress was extremely unpleasant and was not attentive. First, I found a hair in my drink... no big deal right? Stuff happens! Unfortunately, it took 15 minutes for me to be able to get the attention of our waitress to request a new drink. It wouldn't have been so bad had I not been eating salsa & completely finished my husband's drink. Then, it took 45 minutes from the time we ordered to get our food. Once it FINALLY arrived I immediately noticed a dead fly in my beans and pointed it out to the waitress. As my stomach churned, I requested that my remade and she told me she would have it right out. That definitely did not happen. My husband was finished with his meal & mine still had not arrived. I got the attention of another waitress and explained what happened. I asked that my meal be make to go since we had already been there for 2 hours and quite frankly, I no longer had much of an appetite. Once they finally brought my food boxed up, we paid our tab and left. I wasn't pleased with the fact that we had to pay full price for the meal I ended up throwing away untouched and I was surprised that a manager never even came by to apologize. Since then, we've came back again and again, bringing friends, relatives out of town, and just brining ourselves for a relaxing and delicious night. Let me tell you all the reasons we love this place: - very friendly staff - delicious food - I have not ried ever item on the menu, but so far I've loved everything that I've tried! - authentic Mexican food - with enough of a TexMex influence to make it comfortable for us - dishes that involve grilled cactus, and mexican sour cream (there's a world of difference from regular sour cream) - two kinds of home-made salsa (the warm salsa is my favorite!) - regular sightings of firemen in the restaurant - you know that they know where the good stuff is - and did I mention $2.00 Mexican beer on tap? I was in town for work, and decided to opt out of the usual fast food fare to try something new. Thank youuu, Yelp App, for leading me to Taqueria El Mexicano. First off, I have to point out something that most people may not be aware of- the more ran down the exterior of a Mexican restaurant, the more authentic and delicious the food. Take a look at the pictures guys, they speak for themself! We pulled up in front of the restaurant, and I was immediately excited haha. Stepping inside, the restaurant is extremely clean and nicely decorated, so do not get the wrong impression that this is a rundown place. We were seated quickly, and as soon as we were seated, I was won over- the chips and salsa were brought over, and we were given our own salsa. Not one measly dish to share, but SEPERATE bowls. When you go through salsa like I do, this is a big deal. And no sooner then when we finished our salsa, new bowls was brought over almost immediately. I had a very hard time picking through the menu and our waitress was very patient....don't think she could blame me, they have an overwhelming amount of choices! I can't remember the name of the plate that I ordered, but my buddy ordered the abuelitas plate lunch special. We waited for a short period of time for our food, and couldn't believe our eyes when it came out. Let's just say that they do not skimp on portions, but at the same time do not skimp on taste either. I could not finish my plate, shoot I think I left a third of it. The waitress made a small mistake on the tab, but fixed it quickly and without complaint. The damage? Just over $15. Are you kidding me?? We both walked out stuffed and completely satisfied. This used to be my favorite restaurant in Waco, but it's been steadily going down hill for more than a year. The food is not nearly as good as it was before, and I've been unhappy with my entrees more often than not. We took out of town friends last month, and it was embarrassing. The service has always been either really great or really bad, now it's at least consistent, but very bad. The management is rude. You can't have a conversation over the very loud music. If you decide to venture in, review your bill very carefully. We've been overcharged the past five times in a row that we've been there. I kept hoping they'd improved, but now I'm officially done. There are so many other, good Mexican places in Waco. It won't be missed. read more
