Lots of tequila but we were in the mood for breakfast. Chips with hot sauce r great. Roasted pepper sauce is especially good. Coffee is strong but aI like it that way. We sat indoors but they have a large patio that would be fun when warmer. My husband got pork carnitas. The pork was tender but no spices. Beans and rice were very good. I had the breakfast skillet. For a trendy place, the food is incredibly affordable. The complimentary salsa and bean dip was fantastic! Everything sounded good but I love enchiladas so I ordered the enchilada verdes. Authentic Mexican food - not TexMex. Asada and carnitas were very flavorful. The flour tortillas are homemade. We loved the warm black bean dip they serve with chips. We just stumbled across this place after arriving in Waco completely hungry. Saturday brunch was perfect! Two of us split the huevos divorciados and migas with chorizo. A slow Sunday morning brunch with friends went well until it was time to pay. The Skillet a friend and I both ordered (2 separate orders) with 2 extra egg whites was good. Our server brought us a small plate with egg whites on it and said that there were 4 egg whites and we could separate them. No big deal, we just mixed them in with what was left of our meal. The itemized receipt said "side eggs - $4" then right below "egg whites - $2". we were charged SIX DOLLARS for 2 egg whites. When I asked why we were charged two times the lady behind the bar shrugged and said "that bill is correct, eggs are expensive and we had to separate the yolk" Ummm okay. Won't be back. read more

I do not recommend Maria Mezcaleria in Waco, Texas. My experience was nothing short of chaotic and frustrating. Upon arrival, I was told to place my order with the hostess, who was clearly overwhelmed and constantly moving around. Eventually, she pointed me to the bar--but no one there acknowledged me either. I placed my order at 6:15 PM with an estimated pickup time of 6:50 PM. By 7:10 PM, I still had no food and had to repeatedly ask different staff members about my order, even showing them my confirmation. I had asked for chips and salsa with jalapeños, and when my order finally came out at 7:18 PM--over an hour later--I was told I needed to pay an extra dollar for the jalapeños. Seriously? After all that waiting, being charged a dollar on a card machine for something that should have been a courtesy was disappointing and insulting. It costs more to run that transaction than it would to simply apologize for the delay and confusion. The order itself--just three rolled tacos and enchiladas--wasn't worth the hassle. Poor communication, disorganized service, and a lack of basic hospitality. I will not be back. read more

First time here with a group - very disappointing meal. 6 of us ordered appetizers, drinks and drinks. I ordered ceviche and the portion size was generous and plated well, but the first bite was so spicy that I couldn't taste any fish, lime or cilantro. After 3 bites it was obvious it was just too spicy to eat. I've had it often at other restaurants and it's never been too hot to eat. Menu didn't make it sound like it'd be spicier than usual - and I'm not a wimp about spice. I told our server, Israel, it was too hot to eat and he told me they don't serve "Tex Mex" and the food is authentic Mexican flavors - and then he laughed at me for saying I couldn't eat it. Having been to Mexico multiple times, I've never had ceviche like this. I thought he might offer something else but he just walked away. He came back with our check and still charged me $23 even though I wasn't able to eat it. No effort to make it right, no apology, nothing. One of our party ordered Shrimp Diablo and it was overcooked and bland - so not everything is spicy even when you want it to be. We were told no manager was available to talk to, so we left, but what a terrible experience. We're in Waco often and will never go back or recommend it to anyone. Lousy customer service and a really terrible experience - who laughs at a customer who's not satisfied with their meal? If I could give it zero stars, I would. With drinks, dinner and apps, my portion of the bill was almost $50. What a colossal waste. read more

We each ordered the Tlayuda. It is huge--more of a pizza than an entree. We were shocked by the amount of food. We each ate about 1/8 to 1/4 of our food, which felt wasteful. Even the late comers got their food shortly after we got ours. not only that but they serve breakfast till three in the afternoon and who doesn't like Mexican breakfast?
