Found a piece of metal in a burrito. It was an egg and chorizo burrito and the owner said it was from the machine that chops the meat...umm it was egg and chorizo! Only offered to give gift certificates to use on a future date. Basically said you didn't eat it and there was nothing he could do about it. I like this place. Good, large servings, hot sauces, free chips. It's not fancy at all and that's fine with me. I got the camarones (shrimp) a la diabla. I liked the heat and the flavor. The shrimp was over cooked and it was tail-on, which I don't really like. But it was still good enough to not impact my five-star rating overall. My daughter got chorizo and al pastor tacos and was quite happy with them. They are the kind of tacos that are sometimes referred to as "street tacos"; meat on 2 layers of corn tortilla, with cilantro and onion on top, with no cheese or other stuff. In Mexican restaurants and food trucks though, this is simply what a taco is and doesn't need to have the "street" in the name. My husband had the chicken torta, a sandwich. Though he's usually a quesadilla or burrito guy and didn't really like all the breadiness of the sandwich. But sometimes you gotta try different things so I'm glad he took care of that for us. A huge part of how happy I am with a restaurant comes down to the sauces; if they are hot with good flavor coming through, and if big bottles of them are brought to the table, well, I'm generally going to be quite satisfied. read more

We came here for my step daughters birthday, she loves authentic Mexican cuisine, and you can definitely find that here. It's nice because the quality is good, and the prices are better! For a large party, we were accomodated well. I really enjoy the atmosphere, and parking was easy for us. A large group from work went there yesterday for lunch. We stopped in right at 11 and they have no issues seating us at all! The waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and kept all 16 orders straight. They start you out with chips and beans which is amazing. I ordered the asada and al pastor tacos and they were delicious. All the food came out hot and not a single person complained about anything! El Rey is one of the go-to spots for Mexican in Omaha, some of these other reviews got it twisted. They consistently make tasty burritos (I like carne asada) and some days you luck out and they are extra THICC. Tacos are good but I can't speak for any of the other menu items or horchata, yet. My one comment is if you make a bulk order between several people, you may need to ask for more of the sauces as one is not enough for one burrito. read more

If I'm making the trip to south 24th Street, there are a couple other places I'd choose to stop before ending up at El Rey, but having the food truck parked in the Avanza, now Supermercado, parking lot (2900 Leavenworth St, Omaha, NE 68105) tips the scales in El Rey's favor. As such, I've never eaten at the restaurant itself, so this review is dedicated to that delicious mobile food wagon. We've eaten from the truck several times now and it's been good each time. This review is for the actual building on s 24th street, although I've had food from the taco truck and it's pretty much the same. I've been pushing off coming here for awhile, I'm really loyal to the place across the street. However, we decided to do our own taco tour and this was the first stop. I'm very let down. We ordered 4 tacos; 1 al pastor, 1 carnitas, 1 lengua (beef tongue), and 1 chorizo. None of them tasted good. The place was PACKED when we got there around noon today and a lot of the people weren't eating all their food according to my husband. Well if theirs tasted like mine I understand why. The WORST taco is a tie between the lengua and the carnitas. The lengua was so over cooked and cut into little cubes it tasted like I was chewing on rubber bands. I could not chew them up well enough and it was just gross. The carnitas were just bland and way too greasy. Yes I understand that carnitas are typically fried in their own fat, but these were gross. The chorizo was WAY over cooked even by my standards (and I like it crispy), It was burnt and greasy which pooled in the basket on the side. Finally the al pastor, which to say it was the best isn't that much of a compliment, was still rubbery and if I could compliment it at all I liked the onions. It was served with roasted peppers, radishes, limes, a red salsa, and salsa verde. None of which really helped it. Oh and we got chips when we sat down with some bean dip. It didn't have much flavor so we tried to add hot sauce and it didn't help. The chips were rather burnt on some part and they all tasted kinda... weird. If I had to guess they need to change the oil in their fryer. The best part was probably watching 3 of the staff members in the kitchen almost come to blows because they were arguing over something. The rest of the staff were okay, I wouldn't really say friendly either. So no I probably wouldn't come back here. Go across the street to Taqueria Tijuana and get good food. This is an authentic Mexican place on South 24th St. It was packed to the brim on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered a plate of deviled shrimps. My dish was very flavorful, the portion size was huge, and it was very very reasonably priced. The shrimps were of good quality and came with rice and some beans. They also serve freshly made tortillas with the meal (I love these tortillas). The server was friendly, efficient and quick. I also bought some of my favorite Mexican Candy after my meal. Next time, I am going to try their tacos as I have heard many great things about them. This place is definitely worth a visit. read more

The food here is really good! We ordered the burrito Al pastor, tacos buche & carne asada & the horchata. All are highly recommended! They brought out chips & a hot red salsa & a avocado salad in containers (great for adding to your tacos!) & a bean dip in a small cup with a spoon for putting on your chips. The burrito can't out with grilled Serrano peppers & a cup of onions with a spoon. I'm not entirely sure that comes with the burrito or the meal in general, since our food was brought out in two trips. Very quick service. As part of a military family, we moved a lot and I always looked for places that reminded me of home and my roots. Taqueria El Rey was the first place I visited where the atmosphere and food made me feel like I was back with the latino culture I had in California. The servers are bilingual and incredibly friendly. Their carne asada is amazing and tastes good on everything from their tacos, to their sopes, or even tortas(mexican sandwich on a large traditional Mexican breadroll). The only item on their menu that broke me out of my nostalgia would be the beans. They're more watery than I would have at home, and also include some small pieces of meat, but it isnt uncommon for there to be a wide variety to the way latino families cook their beans. All in all, it is authentic food that always delivers. P.S. They have some traditional favorites like menudo, and posole, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention their burritos are popular and extremely large. read more

We enjoyed lunch at this restaurant during the week. Free chips and warm bean dip come out at the beginning of the meal. You have two salsas for dipping (green and red) . Both are spicy. Red is spicy with a little sweetness to it. All very acceptable. We tried the cheese quesadilla with rice and beans as well as the asada (grilled steak), chorizo (spicy pork sausage), and al pastor marinated pork) tacos. All meals were good. Service was decent, but it does take a little time to prepare the meal. Definitely a place to add to our list when we desire Mexican food. Wait staff didn't help out with food selection at all even though it was my first visit; later the waitress was too busy on the phone to expedite check payment. Food didn't look anything like their tv adds and tasted even more subpar. I don't recommend their "steak" sandwich and chicken burrito. What a great experience! Several colleagues of mine tried this place for lunch and truly enjoyed the food. They came out with the warm chips and salsa (Green one was refreshing and the red one was hot). Most of us got the tacos. I ordered 4 of them at $2.25 a taco and they were well worth with it! Went to taqueria el Rey to go enjoy some tortas, but what I wasn't expecting was uncooked meat! I ordered three tortas de asada at the window then they told me to go aside to wait for my food. I waited so long for what! The meat wasn't cooked properly it was missing ingredients it didn't look finished. It looks like it was made in a rush without care or anything. Then later I called and they claimed to not have some of the ingredients in that moment, that Also just asked me to go back and get another when I was really just going to waist my time again. I've stumbled across many a Taqueria El Rey truck out in the wild, yet am just now visiting the actual sit down restaurant, so review time! This particular location is located on the far end of 24th street, my most favorite road in the whole city. It's small building with a drive thru option. The inside is surprisingly spacious for how small the place looks from the outside, with tables and booths with super uncomfortable wooden benches attached. There is a tv that always seems to have Univision on (I walked in right when the news was detailing my horoscope for the day-sweet!) and there is a cooler that offers canned and bottle drinks, as well a water. Again, pretty typical setup. Taqueria El Rey is authentic food at decent prices. We were promptly greeted by a waitress and given a basket with chips and a watery bean dip with a red salsa and tomatillo/avocado salsa. They were both delicious, with the green having more of a spicy kick. The menu is pretty typical of most Mexican restaurants, so I didn't go in their expecting to have my mind blown by some obscure dish. They do offer pozole on the weekend, which means a second trip is now warranted.. I ordered the combination plate, which was 1 cheese enchilada, 1 fat chile relleno, 2 potato flautas, and a substantial portion of rice and beans with fresh tortillas. One thing I didn't even consider when ordering is that I accidentally chose a full vegetarian meal-no meat at all! Well, the beans prob have lard in them so I guess if you're a militant veggie person, this may not fit the bill, but I was impressed by my accidental faux healthy choice. Our meals came out quickly and we dug in! The rice and beans were decent. The rice had peas in it, which I personally like but my dining companion did not. Beans are standard, but they do have a sprinkling of jack cheese which I enjoyed. The potato flautas lacked flavor, they needed more lemon or lime juice in the potato mixture, or some spices at least...I had to douse these in hot sauce so that I didn't feel like I was eating mashed potato rolled tacos. The enchilada was VERY cheesy. Seriously, it was like 75% cheese, 20% sauce and 5% tortilla. Not super flavorful, but decent! The chile relleno was not my favorite. The breading was soggy and there was not much cheese inside the chile. Guess they used it all up on the enchilada. We also got Mexican coke to drink. I don't drink soda very often so I was surprised that it tasted flat with very little flavoring. I can't say it's their fault, most likely my stunted taste buds were to blame. It came to around $13 each, and we had more than enough leftover to take home. It was a decent meal, but I have way too many other favs in the area. For three years, every time I am in Omaha, this is the only place I will eat dinner. The food is amazing. The tacos are the best. Have tried tacos all over the USA and Mexico and they don't compare. Their soups are phenomenal. The place is filled with locals and can get very busy, very quickly. Their drive thru is nonstop busy. I found myself in South O with limited cash (which I was saving for my post meal trip to Jacobo's), so opted to give lunch a go here rather than my normal fav joint. My dining companion was new to the beauty of authentic Mexican food, so got a bit crazy with the following: 1 guacamole, 1 cheek taco, 1 carne azada taco, 1 pollo gordita, 1 burrito with carne azada and chorizo, 1 flan and 1 churro (don't judge). Our waitress had that "totally over it" look on her face, but we were not going to be deterred as we tore into our comp basket of chips with a side of beans and salsa. Both tacos were flavorful, the guacamole was chunky and fresh, and the burrito was tasty and large enough to serve both without all of the other accompaniments we ordered. The chicken was packed with flavor, but the gordita itself was not my most favorite. I do appreciate the side of crema and shredded lettuce that came with it to help freshen the intense seasoning on the meat. The flan was a miss, as were the churros. I'm glad I gave it a go, but probs isn't on my frequent visitor list with so many options available (although I am curious to try their chilaquiles). I'll continue to pop by their truck on occasion, due to convenience of grabbing a meal on my way home from downtown. Our could-be $5 lunch turned into a $30 smorgasboard that resulted in a couple of food babies and plenty of leftovers for dinner. After a crazy haunted hay rack ride, we stopped at their taco truck which was parked right off the interstate and leavenworth. I had the chorizo torta (basically a chorizo sausage sandwich). It was delicious! Needless to say adding a crisp bun and mayo to sausage is just great. The best part is that it cost $4.50 and is a huge sandwich. They also had two hot sauces that you could try. I have a high tolerance for spicy, so I didn't think either was too hot, but the green one was very refreshing with the abundance of cilantro. It lightened up the richness of the sandwich.
