I found myself hungry for Mexican food at 8 am. I found that this place was open and that serves chilaquiles. I have heard people say they have great tamales and carnitas, but never tried it before. Place was great. Chilaquiles rojos, served with beans and rice and choice of eggs on top were delectable and abundant! I now want to go to try the rest of the menu. This is a gem! Food is always brought out extremely fast and made with love. Service is always great, good music, good seating, and I've been going for 20+ years, my father went growing up as well. Well lookey here at this hidden unknown gem!! I used to make the trip down to South O to stock up on some other popular chips, salsa and other Mexican but I'll probably never return there with Sam's around! Much much better chips and salsa which I didn't know was possible! Three of us loaded up on tacos, tamales, enchiladas, chips and salsa and our bill was $24!!!!! I then took home a dozen tamales, more chips and two different kinds of salsa that quickly disappeared in my house. A huge container of the pork chili bean dip which is amazing! Don't leave without it! I love that they are fully prepared to pack up a huge to go order for you but also have seating so you can down some fresh stuffed tacos while you're there. If you live out West there is nothing around that you can get like this and it's well worth the drive!!! read more

I moved from the Sedona area in Arizona to Omaha and have found it difficult to find authentic handmade tamales. In the Sedona area this was often a customary food served for Christmas. I searched online and found that Sam's-Leon Mexican Supplies store in Omaha sells a dozen authentic handmade tamales. So I made a purchase for a bargan price of just $26.00. So glad I did. They were fresh and even steamy when I made the purchase. I took them home and discovered that they are also generous in size and the taste delivers that truely authentic quality, just like I remember enjoying in Arizona, often served with avocado to enhance nutritional value. I highly recommend. I plan to purchase more as a Christmas holiday tradition. read more

Based on a recommendation I went to Sam's and Leon's for tortilla chips and salsa to go.It is a quaint little restaurant in south omaha. The chips are prebagged and on a shelf so I was able to pick up two bags but had to order the salsa at the counter. I ordered a pint of traditional and a pint of chunky salsa. The waitress at the counter was very nice. I sat down and waited, after 20 minutes they finally packaged my ordered. I think they forgot about my order. Had I not paid in advance I may have left. Just was too long to wait for salsa. On the positive side the chunky salsa was flavorful, with just a little heat. The chunky is the way to go. The traditional was ok but absolutely preferred the chunky style. The chips were nice and crunchy and held up to the nachos I made at home instead of store brand that typically gets soggy under the cheese and salsa. Overall the chips and salsa was very good and plan to go again. I would have rated them higher if I did not have too wait so long for my salsa. read more

Tamales are right on! Lots of meat and large. Masa was fluffy - I would come back for those. Very friendly staff and cute and clean place. Otherwise prepare for a grease fest. We got green salsa and red and 2 bags of flour chips. Green salsa tastes like it's right out of the can. Red is fresh and not spicy. A good all around salsa - tastes the same as jacobos. Flour chips are good but greasy. We tried pork chili dip and it is floating in grease. I would not eat that again. Chicken enchilada was ok - good flavor I just don't really like enchilada sauce and it was smothered in it and didn't appear to have any cheese. Chili relleno had good flavor but we took the food to go and by the time we got home the outside was soggy. Delicious pepper and cheese though. My husband had 2 Beef tacos with fried shells. My husband said they were good but not over the top good. He would eat them again but not make a special trip. All in all eat the tamales. We took a dozen home and they are great. Pretty tasty - service had a couple of missteps (but maybe our group of 12 threw them for a loop? I tried to order a cheek taco and a chicken taco, plus a tamale (which I heard were to die for). I think what showed up was one cheek taco... though I got to sample one of the tamale's (surprisingly spicy) and some table guacamole (good, but I wish the chips were thinner. these reminded me more of pita chips). After calling Jacobo's and after being told that they are no longer accepting New Year's Eve orders, I was on the hunt for tamales. Behold, Sam's-Leon discovery. I placed my order on the telephone and the person who handled my order was helpful and pleasant. Okay, fast forward to pick up. Up front and honest: the area is not the best. A few abandoned houses around the corner, lack of parking, ehh, you know. The building is an old house, however appeared clean and fully staffed. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is there was confusion with my order, where it was, who was gathering it, etc. Tamales were amazing!! Rice and beans were standard, but good. I must admit that I'm not surprised that I am the first to review this joint. It's a bit off the 'path' of South O (a.k.a. not on 24th st.), and I've never seen an advertisement - ever. This is one of those places, however, that you openly want to succeed, but you also secretly want to keep (what seems) all to yourself. Parking is street only, but I've never had an issue. Mostly because if you aren't reading the window it looks more like a house than a restaurant. What's that you say? Decor?? You'll find none of that here. You will walk in to find a counter, four tables, and a medium sized deli type counter in which you can order bulk meals and Mexican cooking supplies to go. The menu is large enough to always make you pause and think, and it's displayed over the front counter on a large marker board. The entire place is always immaculate, and they have a large open window that shows off the obvious endless work they do to keep the kitchen (literally) shining. Not only have I yet to eat something disappointing from here, but I've never heard anything but raves from those I go with. I'm fond of the pork burritos, and I recently tried the chicken quesadilla for the first time. If you eat in the restaurant they will bring you free homemade chips and salsa, but no such luck if you grab your food to go. Every time you bite down you can taste a distinct difference between the junky junk junk junk that you get served at most all other quick pick Mexican restaurants. Here you'll find all undeniably fresh ingredients. My quesadilla was stuffed with pulled chicken, crisp lettuce, sliced onion, ultra fresh tomato, and large perfect cuts of avocado. The portions are huge and there is no way you could possibly leave still feeling hungry. ::que ron popeil style voice:: So how much would you pay for such an amazing lunch/dinner? You'll actually pay about $1.00-2.50 for any one item. Keep in mind that by ordering two things, you've likely just over-ordered. Consider getting a water, and two people can easily sit down to homemade chips, salsa, and a mouth watering entree for about $4-$5. I'm hovering between four and five stars for Sam's-Leon. The food was amazing. For the first time in my life I had a cachete (cheek) taco and it was so good I want to go back in time and punch myself in the face for having not tried it sooner. The asada taco was very good in its own right, and the salsa was delicious with, for me, just the right amount of kick to it. What is keeping me from giving them that fifth star was the fact that some of our party didn't get their food at first and had to re-order it, while others did not ever receive everything they asked for. That said, I don't believe anyone was charged for something they didn't get, and the quality of the food more than makes this an easy four stars for me. read more

Keepin' it simple, because that's how they do at Sam's-Leon. Corn chips super thick. Not in love with 'em with salsa, but AMAZE with a slab o' peanut butter and/or Nutella (what?! multi-ethnic is wrong?!) Best chicken enchiladas in-house, carry out for lunch or reheated from your fridge! Beware of the frozen aluminum foil if you still have metal fillings in your mouth. Awesome tamales that reheat super well, especially when you buy the bag o' 12 to go. Sometimes they have special flavors (uh...cheese-jalapeno, yes please.) The frijoles are THICK, if you into the more thickish, salty type (I heart all frijoles, so love these too). Service in house was so-so. Carry out (call ahead) was spot on. When you're shopping in the hood, just pop by...they got the enchiladas, frijoles, and tamales ret-to-go. PS- Not a fan of the carne asada taco or chile relleno, but hey...can't love everything and that's OK because I got a bunch of other stuff ready in the freezer! read more

I ran into this one by searching for Mexican restaurants right here on yelp.com. After reading the reviews, I wondered if this might be the place with the fabulous tamales a coworker took me to about 10 or so years ago; if so, it was definitely worth a look. Dropped in with the family tonight, and we were all agreed: everything was good. Moreover, I recognized it instantly as the place that had impressed me so much a decade ago. The taco meats were seasoned just right, the tortillas were homemade, the tamales were as good as I remembered, and everything was inexpensive. My wife ordered an enchilada that looked a bit north-of-the-border with a flour tortilla and cheddar-jack sprinkled on top, but the filling was very good, and the sauce was unique and quite tasty. Even the rice and beans were a cut above most I've had in town. Better yet, you can buy the tamales fresh from the steamer by the dozen, or cold. Tonight, they were selling a dozen cold pork tamales for about five bucks. Guess what we're having for dinner tomorrow? Anything sold in the restaurant is available for take-out, often in bulk, including chile verde and three different salsas. A number of Mexican and US sodas round out the menu. I had heard about Sam's Leon from some co-workers, but was inspired to try it after reading the review posted on Yelp. The reviewer was totally correct. Really good food and really reasonable prices. I had the Chicharon burrito. It was a burrito filled with fried pork rinds (chicharonnes), beans and cheese. Not health food, but worth the splurge. The refried beans were delicious and the rice surprisingly good. I had water, which was delivered to the table in a pitcher filled with ice and wedges of lime. Totally refreshing! I spent a whole $3.99 on a meal that I couldn't finish. Wow! I'm glad I took the advice of the Yelp reviewer who recommended to order only one menu item! I will go back again.....soon! read more

Ok people - this place is legit. I finally made it here and now I wish I would have a long time ago. We tried the tamales, pork chile, beef flautas and the refired beans. The flautas were ok but everything else was outstanding. The pork chile turned out to be red but it was the best I have ever had. The tamales tasted very fresh - the masa was not dry at all. The refried beans were probably the best in town. We will definitely being going back here - very soon. read more

This is one of the best Mexican places in all of Omaha to eat at if you want good quality Mexican food. Sometimes it's quick, and sometimes it takes them up to 15-30 minutes to make the food, but in the end it's worth it when you have their fresh excellent tamales, their fantastic red rice with peas & carrots, and their addictive chips w/ guacamole. When you eat their food, you can tell that they work really hard to make it taste good. I've been coming to this place for 17 years at least and not once in that whole duration of years have they ever made me disappointed. I've been going here since highschool for their homemade chips and salsa. I will continue to go back. its really a cool, home style shoppe/restaurant. The only thing that gives me the willies is the douglas county health assessor's rating. Yum! Yum! Yum! The carne asada tacos are great! We also had the fried carne asada burrito which had beans and rice in it. It was awesome too!I think this is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. They have daily specials and their Tacos are discounted on Wednesdays instead of Tuesdays like other places. Went to Sam's this morning for the first time in a while since Jacobos was closed. Bought a couple lbs of masa preparada to make some tamales. Masa was great but more on the salty side. Maybe I'm just not used to their masa, but we did find it salty to be honest. We also got some menudo and that was great. read more

This local restaurant located in South Omaha offers affordable (especially if you get the specials) Mexican food. I have order pick up order from them several times and have never been disappointed. Service and preparation of the food was prompt and efficient. They have wide variety of meats available for tacos and burritos to keep those who want more traditional options as opposed to "tex mex" style of food. Customer service is nonexistent, if you have any issues they will not stand behind they're product. They do have good Menudo and enchiladas. Everything thing else is very similar to everyone else. Don't go out of your way the owner doesn't appreciate your business. Keep in mind I'm typing this as I just realized I got shorted 6 cold tamales. I was told that since I took them "to go" and I wasn't there when I realized it, they don't know that they didn't give them to me. That's right they called me a liar and they stole from me. My first 5 star! This place is just a 5 minute bicycle ride from my house and has been there for over 30 years (longer than I have been around) and yet this was my first visit. I got everything on takeout and overall was VERY pleased with it all. I ended up getting 4 steak burritos, 4 chicken tacos, 2 chicken tamales, one pint of rice and a large bag of flour chips all for just over $20 (I wanted to try a lot being my first visit). It ended up lasting me 3 meals. Only thing I could knock them on was the rice. It was rather bland and dry, but when mixed in with some salsa and eaten with the tamales or burritos it was fine.
