Dr. Allmen quite literally saved me. She truly cares about her patients and takes the time to get to know their healthy history, challenges and current concerns, and then works diligently with patients to map out a customized plan of action. While I was half way around the world and had some concerns and questions about a treatment plan, I emailed her and much to my surprise, she responded almost immediately. Even though it was 6am on Saturday morning in NY, she cared enough about me and my health to call me and discuss everything with me for half an hour. I couldn't believe it! No doctor has ever done that for me. She really went above and beyond the call of duty, and her expert advice has helped prevent an unpleasant fate that I once thought was unavoidable. She's truly amazing. She has also just saved the life of my friend, too. After reading her incredibly helpful and insightful book, Menopause Confidential, I recommended it to several friends - her book contains so many medical facts that I had no idea about, it totally blew my mind. One of my friends took the advice Dr. Allmen laid out in the book for when to get a colonoscopy (my friend was long overdue for her first one), and thank goodness she got one because during the colonoscopy, they found some polyps that were cancerous and removed them. That wouldn't have happened if my friend didn't read Dr. Allmen's book and act on her excellent advice. I love that Dr. Allmen bases her recommendations on evidence-based research, hard science and her years of experience. She's an amazing doctor who is at the top of her game. I have been lucky enough to be a patient of Dr Allmen's for 20 yrs! Yesterday was our anniversary and she greeted me at the door with a hug. What Dr does that? She is an expert in her field, on top of all the latest findings and treatments! And she takes as much time as needed with me during each visit. Pros: very responsive via email. When she is in a good mood she is so pleasant and funny. Initially, I was happy to have found her 8 years ago as there was not a lot of knowledgeable practitioners in the field of HRT. Her book is good, she shares basic need to know- new to peri meno and menopause knowledge. Her knowledge is adequate if you do not have any other concerning health issues or do not ask her to dive deeper regarding other health issues /concerns. Cons: Started with Dr. Allmen's services in 2018-19 for debilitating peri meno issues . She recommended a complete hysterectomy (including ovaries) to safely start transdermal estrogen/hrt even tho' it was only my uterus(fibroids) that was the "issue" regarding HRT. Two other healthcare providers (obgyns) stated it is not a good idea to remove ovaries with out solid evidence, reason or history. Because if HRT was not right for me and I needed to stop, I would be in full blow surgically induced menopause. Dr. Allmen's blanket, firm statement that vitamin supplements are a waste of money if you eat a balanced diet. She didn't even ask me about my diet which is plant based therefore I need certain supplements. Not many people can successfully eat a balanced diet especially with present day farming practices. Supplements can help fill that gap. When asked about my vitamin D supplementation she adamantly stated my dose was way too high and neglected to ask me to get my vitamin D blood level tested or ask me if I had I had recent levels. Which I did and my vitamin D levels were optimal. Around 2023, her attitude has changed. She is abrupt and at times just arrogant. I actually saved a voice mail she had left me so my husband could listen to it. He said "wow , maybe her hormones are not balanced?" Her lack of compassion was disturbing. At that point she made it clear to me that she was not the menopause practitioner for me. She seemed more motivated by money than the care for her patients. She was clearly not as knowledgeable as 2 others NAMS practitioners that I recently found. Past year I was having breast issues which required biopsies . I needed advice as to whether I should stay on HRT. My other providers that are not NAMS trained immediately told me to stop the HRT due to the recent breast biopsy result. After I emailed Dr Allmen the breast biopsy reports she replied "NORMAL ! Read report. All I see is benign. No change on my end". I then replied "did you read the report"? As one biopsy was benign, but has the risk to upgrade and deemed high risk though on the lower end of high. Additionally, I was advised to see breast cancer surgeon specialist. The two breast surgeons said to stop HRT." After hearing this, all of a sudden Dr Allmen states "I cannot help you with complicated breast issues" and for me to "continue my breast care journey with the breast doctors who told me to stop HRT." Why were the breast biopsy results not "complicated" prior when she told me all was "NORMAL! Read report. All I see is benign. No change on my end"? She also told me my "emails were too long, she was not at my beck and call, and I guess you think you have unlimited consultations with me because you paid so much money for the year". When she initially stated that my annual fee allowed that I could reach out to her for the year when needed. Since I no longer wanted to be chastised by Dr Allmen, I looked else where and found 2 wonderful doctors who gave me the science (via ASCOG and NAMS) and evidenced based statements regarding my breast health issue and HRT. But Dr Allmen sent me right back to breast cancer doctors and traditional obgyns. who have no HRT training. Dr Allmen did not even offer to help me with a non hormonal plan to help alleviate my menopausal suffering. When I started in 2018-19 Dr Allmen's price was around $800/year then jumped up to 1,950 in 2023- 2024 During one of our last phone conversations it sounded as though she was actively chewing her food (eating a meal?) during our conversation. Dr. A always has my back. I can reach out to her and get a prompt answer to any gynecological question I might have. I like the format of the visit. First here's a thorough conversation, in a comfortable, pristine office-like room, that covers all your personal and medical issues with recommendations, mammogram and RX prescriptions and some chit chat that I always find interesting. She looks you right in the eyes and I feel like she really cares about my health. Then you go into another clinical room for the weigh in adn height check, and a physical breast and pelvic exam, which is always thorough, swift and gentle - she has NEVER hurt me. I am grateful for Tara's expertise on keeping us older ladies younger with her HRT program. I read the other reviews below and you should know that yes, she's expensive and doesn't entertain the idea of insurance. But in my opinion, she's worth every penny - that annual fee gives you access to her ALL year! read more

I read Dr. Tara Allmen's book: Menopause Confidential: A Doctor Reveals the Secrets to Thriving Through Midlife. This book CHANGED MY LIFE. I was experiencing severe sypmtons of perimenopause. I was scared to take low dose birth control pills to releive my symptons but took Dr. Allmen's advice. Within three days of following all of her recommendations, I felt 100% better and all my symptoms disappeared. I am so greatful for Dr. Allmen's medical advice. Every women needs to read this book: informative, based on science, practical and easy solutions written with humor and from the heart. Where to begin? Dr. Allmen has been brilliantly, thoughtfully, and meticulously looked after me for 16+ yrs .. along with oodles of other lucky ladies in Manhattan. Her book Menopause Confidential is VERY helpful for the woman who is peri menopausal or in menopause. About 2 years ago I happened to be reading AARP (as a new 50 yo) and came across some really great articles about menopause and peri menopause. What an eye opener! I had been searching several years (without any luck) for someone to help me with all the mood/cognition issues etc.... The article mentioned Dr Tara Allmen in NY. So, of course I looked her up and got her book. It is definitely a silver lining on the peri menopause/menopause cloud. Who knew there was a branch of women's medicine specifically to help us gals?! She is NAMS certified-menopause practitioner. I am also lucky enough to live in the same state so I was able to make an appointment to see her. Unfortunately, I am not a cut and dry patient as I have a large fibroid filled uterus and therefore am not the best patient for low dose continuous birth control. However, Dr Allmen did give recommend a hysterectomy to help relieve certain symptoms and then start on low dose estrogen patches 2x/week to relieve other symptoms or do a 6 month trial of low dose birth control. The book demystifies the use of hormones and their risks. I highly recommend this book! Fast forward post hysterectomy (uterus only) 4 months ago and transdermal estrogen patches 2x/week I am feeling so much better mentally and physically! read more

What to expect when you're...Aging Dr. Allmen is both doctor and author. Her book "Menopause Confidential" should be as much a bible to aging women as the "What To Expect..." guidebook is for expecting mothers! In person Dr. Allmen is engaging. She asks questions. She listens. She treats you as the individual that you are. Nothing formulaic. If you cannot see her then read her book. It is informative and easy to read. Sprinkled with humor. Her book addresses menopausal annoyances such as hot flashes, menofog, and weight gain. It intelligently answers the why and offers the how to address the havoc that can be wrought by a woman's natural hormonal changes. She also addresses women's aging in general, discussing wrinkles, gray hair, bladders, bones and colonoscopies. I followed the book's humane colonoscopy prep recipe - which definitely did not include drinking quarts of chalky, nauseous goop. Afterwards my gastroenterologist added a hand-written note to the test results that said, "Nice prep!". I find Dr. Allmen to be intelligent and caring. Her office appointments run on time with minimal waiting. She is in the quality of life business. I was a patient of Dr. Tara Allmen's for 5 years. The pros: she's smart, personable and competent. The cons: she's expensive - $550 cash for an office visit (no insurance or credit cards); she only sees patients on Mondays; and she expects her patients to be marketers for her media and book business. During office visits she frequently spoke about her TV appearances, etc. My initial reaction was, 'hey, this is NY, she's making the most of an opportunity.' When she published her menopause book in 2017 she talked about it a lot and repeatedly suggested I buy it. I didn't. (She eventually gave me a free copy.) She asked me during an office visit to give her a "good online review" to help sell books. She also gave her book publisher my email address without asking; I was dismayed when I realized I was on her publisher's pitch list. I chose to overlook these issues for a few years because her expertise is valuable, but it eventually became too much and I decided to move on. We parted ways amicably. read more

Dr Allmen, Remember me? No, probably not. You came HIGHLY recommended. I was in a horrible place. A mother of three, beautiful, intelligent kids. A loving wife. A very active, healthy, fit mom. At 47, all hell broke loose. I gained weight, couldn't sleep and thought I was losing it. I made an appointment with you. So happy. I will find the cause. So many ailments. Too many to list. My first appointment I had to change. You only see new patients on Mondays so balancing the kids and a commute to NYC was tricky. Honestly cant remember but it was well in advance. No biggie. Second appointment. Well, referring back to " not feeling well", I was trying to keep it all together so I dressed to go for a run" walk". Was carying laundry downstairs and broke my foot and ankle in three spots. Another reason I needed to see you, find out what was going on. After all , i was an athlete and in great shape but the last few years were a disaster. My hormones were crazy, hypertension set in, panic attacks at night, sweats, weight gain etc. I make a third appointment, so looking forward to getting your help. Cannot wait. Mind you, I am on crutches with a full cast to my knee. My right foot so I cannot drive, relying on Peapod and balance to run the house and care for my family and of course friends to drive. We Were supposed to go on a family trip to the tropics for Easter school break but I had to let my husband and kids go without me. You cannot fly with a cast. I stayed home alone, navigating the stairs on my back side while maneuvering my laptop, book and water bottle. 12 hours upstairs. 12 in the kitchen. I cannot drive, I guess I could take the train from Long Island but I am on crutches. I wake up, get the kids to school. Knowing it is a wicked storm. Not Sandy, but torrential downpours. I call my friend to confirm. Guess what, she is rescheduling. Roads are too bad. I call you in a panic. So sorry. Can't believe it, my bad. Ugh. Then I email you to be sure you got my messages.
