The Malton Killarney Hotel - Garden Room Restaurant

4.5 stars Full…read moredisclosure: We received a complimentary room upgrade to a Junior Suite at check-in and were placed in the room located directly above the hotel's main entrance. We were also treated to a complimentary sample of sweets in celebration of our honeymoon. The Malton does "historical hotel" right. It successfully achieves an elegant and vintage atmosphere without seeming "dated." The building itself makes a memorable impression covered in ivy surrounded by beautiful gardens. The Malton is an oasis in the heart of Killarney - within walking distance of all the shops and pubs. The room was gorgeous and the bathroom was supplied with modern amenities that still kept that classic touch. It's worth noting that the hotel does not have air conditioning, but we still found our room to be comfortable. Our only complaint about the room is that it is a little noisy (because of its location about the entrance, no doubt.) Breakfast included the typical array of pastries, meats, and cheeses, but also featured a made-to-order hot food menu with ample variety. The Belgian waffle was worth noting - it was coated in cinnamon and every bite was scrumptious. (It's a bit small though - order 2!) Unfortunately, the restaurant is not managed very well during breakfast. You must wait to be seated by a host, who may then take your order for coffee/tea and toast to pass along to your server - which really slows the seating process. The dining room is tightly packed, making it a little difficult for wheelchairs or strollers to maneuver. (Even on foot, winding your way to the buffet can be difficult.) One thing I wish we had done, but didn't have time - the Malton's wine tasting room!

Three lattes with scones later in an elegant lounge area reeking with character as a former Great Southern railway hotel, we moseyed off to our meeting resolving unanimously to return for lunch before our afternoon train if time permitted. Which it duly did. Steak sandwiches for two and salad for the sad vegetarian were deemed excellent. As it was Friday and we'd had a productive meeting I awarded myself a beer. At 2 in the afternoon. Such decadence. Thus replenished we boarded our train back to the shmoke. If the rest of the hotel is anything like the food in the restaurant I will definitely stay here should the opportunity present. Excellent.

I was welcomed with a lovely chat over tea and a scone by the innkeeper Rosaleen O'Leary! I really appreciated her taking time to get to know me and share her thoughts on Irish history and culture. My room was good sized, appealing and a great value. Showers were hot with good water pressure. The gardens on the property were just gorgeous - imagine Secret Garden type plantings. My stay included a complete hot Irish breakfast with lots of coffee, eggs and Irish bacon - similar to a fried ham. Mmmm. I enjoyed a morning walk down the road to Ross Castle, which I highly recommend. Who knew the advancements in medieval architecture and defense? Ross Castle Lodge B&B is adjacent to the Killarney National Park, and one may walk through the park to get to the 'town' of Killarney where you'll find lots of restaurants, pubs & shops. Booking was easy via email. Walkable distance to town and the train station - but a cab is easier for arrivals! They gave us great recommendations and also drove us to the bus station when we had to leave. Killarney was amazing! It was our favorite city in Ireland and we would love to go back. Visiting Ireland for the first time and staying in Killarney for the evening, I was searching for a…read moreplace to grab dinner. Looking up different places and reading menus, I decided to give The Failte Hotel a try and overall, it was ok. I walked in on a Saturday evening, around 6:15pm. Going up the stairs to the restaurant, it was large with plenty of tables, a bar, and a few TVs playing. I got a table near the window facing the street with ease. The waitress came over with a menu but I knew what I wanted since I browsed it before walking in. She seemed new though as she wasn't overly friendly and didn't explain that I had to go up to the bar to cash out. Sipping on my pint of Guinness with Black, in what felt like maybe five minutes, my dinner arrived. I ordered the Cajun Chicken Burger, which is a grilled Cajun chicken fillet topped with lettuce, tomato, and red onion with sweet chili mayo between a toasted brioche bun and served with a side of fries. The sandwich was good, nothing really stood out, but that's fine, it had good flavor overall. I liked the spice it had and the side of fries had come fresh out of the fryer as they were very hot and crispy. Overall, a fine experience at The Failte Hotel. The waitress who waited on me seemed new and should have done a better job communicating the cash out process, but no harm done. The food was fine as well, nothing really noteworthy. If I were passing through Killarney again, I wouldn't mind coming back for dinner.

We chose this place because it was close to where we were staying, there was food that sounded good to us, and the prices were reasonable. There was only one other table with people at it when we arrived but by the time we left about an hour later the place was hopping. I ordered the spaghetti carbonara and my partner got the classic burger. The carbonara was so good and you could tell they made their own pasta. The garlic bread was also delicious and hit the spot after a long day. The burger was also good, my partner said it had a tangy flavor that he couldn't identify but liked. The fries were also super crispy and fluffy, exactly how we like them. The servers were nice and quick to take our orders and bring our food. It took a while to pay the bill but that could certainly be because we weren't sure if they would bring it to us or if we needed to get it from the bar. A musician set up behind our table shortly after we arrived and played some acoustic sets. He was fantastic and we loved listening to him. This was a great place to stop in at when we were exhausted and in need of a good meal. I would go back for the fries on their own because of how good they were.

The hotel itself feels warm and sophisticated with many areas to take a seat and relax near a fireplace or in a quieter area. This is a great destination for rejuvenation and restoration. The presentation of food and allergens are neatly detailed for every offering with many gluten free options. The food was delicious and perfectly prepared and the service exceptional. The room itself is very well appointed and laid out in one of the most travel friendly designs I have seen. A desk, a seating area with a table to enjoy your morning beverage by the window, a refrigerator neatly hidden under the television. A closet with ample space but also a shelf to organize your travel items and clothing on the other side of the room wall so things stay neatly out of site. Thank you to the designer of this room! Robes and slippers for two placed at the foot of the bed. A nice size Tv and coffee or tea service at the desk. The bathroom includes both a shower and a comfortable size bathtub. Parking was included and no extra charge. Perhaps because it was off-season or because we were not staying very long we were upgraded from our woods view room to a Lakeview room. We had a balcony on the top floor that overlooks the lake and some ruins, and it was absolutely stunning. We could watch the deer from our balcony. The room was quite large and had an American sized king bed, and a second bed that was somewhere between an American twin size and an American full-size, a perfect set up for my family of 3. There was also a sitting area and a tea and coffee maker. We did not have dinner at the hotel, but we did have breakfast and it was excellent. There was some thing for everyone in my family. My husband enjoyed the salmon, quiche and sausages. I enjoyed the pancakes and the fun little pancake maker. I also enjoyed the French toast. My little one loved the scrambled eggs and pastries. Overall, we had an excellent stay and I would definitely recommend it. .

Stayed three nights here and loved the room and location given the easy access to town. Breakfasts…read morewere great options for the buffet or off the menu. Hotel is very busy with tours and golfers making up most of the guests it appears. Well decorated and very comfortable area around the hotel to read a book or sit by the fireplace. We had what we were told a 'smart' room but we're still trying to figure out what was smart about it. The lights are controlled by either a wall pad or pads at the bedside. Problem is that there doesn't seem to be a way to just have bathroom lights on without the bedroom lights bring on as well. Looks like you could turn off the bed lights bring which would take it off the 'smart' pads and the lamp switches are not easily accessible if you have to access them again. Our other issue was with the 'smart' tv. Turning on the tv the hotel's information screen would come on. Selecting the tv option gets you the tv which is where the problem starts. Hitting the Guide button, which on other tvs, gets you a list of channels and what shows are on. Pressing this one takes you back to the hotel screen. Going back into the tv you find that you'll see each tv station available and in order to know what's on you need to look at each channel separately. Not a pleasant experience. Jack, our porter who was very helpful providing information about the hotel, tried to figure out what was going on but couldn't. Another porter also tried to help but again was stumped. Reported the issue at the reception desk. Was told they would have someone look at it. Came back in the afternoon to find the tv on and thought the problem was fixed (no notes left telling us what happened) but nothing was changed. Reported it again, was told someone would look at but again nothing. Should also mention when we first arrived at the room it appeared the room had not been vacuumed. Same thing the next day so that had to be reported as well. Rating is given because of the lack of interest or concern of the staff about the problems that we were having. Lovely hotel, very comfortable, good food but if the staff commitment isn't there that just detracts from the experience.

We were seated in a small room across from the windows. It would have been nice to be next to the windows, but there's only so many windows. Our server was pleasant and respectful. We ordered right away. The server brought complimentary breads with a delicious olive tapenade. I ordered the seafood paparadelle. The dish was unfortunately on the bland side but the seafood was cooked appropriately. My husband had the duck breast and enjoyed it. They finished the meal with cute little complimentary doughnuts. Nice touch. During our meal we had told the server that it was incredibly warm in the restaurant. He told us that someone had told him the same thing the night before and the manager said "this time of year we have to run the heat". Ugh. In one of the tables across from us, we watched a woman mopping sweat off her forehead several times. We had planned on a second drink, but it was much too hot.
