Worth a go for a change, but you can find cheaper curries elsewhere.

Apart from that, the whole set-up seems to scream posh-Indian, although the prices and food really don't reflect that: a real mixed bag, this place. Noori's is a bit of a confusing evening out: everything seems to be incongruous. However, from a really basic perspective, Noori's does serve very nice food. The curries aren't too hot, the selection is pretty standard, but expansive, and it all tastes great. Living in Brighton, there are plenty of places that claim to give you authentic Indian cuisine: Noori's is much more your standard British-Indian fare. As such, it is uneventful, if perfectly lovely dining. Apart from the food, Noori's is otherwise a little confusing. The space to sit down is quite big, yet often empty: probably because it's so hard to find. The decor is faux-glam: you might feel underdressed when you first enter, but then realise that no one else there has dressed up, and I doubt anyone ever has to come here. Also, apart from the look of Noori's, little really says "glamorous". All in all, it's a rather peculiar dining experience: give it a try, but don't expect the world from Noori's: it's not the best, nor the most authentic Indian experience in Brighton.

We sat at the front of the restaurant and there was live music being played on the piano. We very much enjoyed the music but the staff also asked us if we were happy with the volume and where we were sat which was much appreciated. The food was delicious, authentic Indian, not greasy, and not a korma insight. We had a few items from the street food menu and a main, the waiter explained what everything was and the various dips when they were served. They also provide extensive gluten, vegan and dairy free dishes, all of which are clearly displayed on the menu. I know they've received several restaurant awards and frequently feature in Brighton's top 10 restaurants so I'd definitely recommend booking ahead. I just wish I'd remembered to take some pictures!

For dinner, I sat at the communal table and ordered the Set Menu (Veg), which started with a huge platter of pappadum along with pickled onions and three different types of chutneys/jams. Then there was the Chilli Pickle Cornflake Mix, a reinvented version of "Bombay mix" containing cornflakes, lentils, peanuts, chickpeas, flaked rice, cashews, pecans, raisins, and more! This was so crunchy and delicious that I even asked to take the rest home after the meal! On the waiter's recommendation, I tried the pani puri for my appetizer, a typical Indian street food made of puri (a deep-fried puff) filled with potato, chickpeas, and chutney--it also came with a tamarind water on the side, which you poured into the puris before eating. While this was an interesting dish, there was very little flavor to the little puffs, and I thought these was skippable. For my main, I chose the Punjabi Aubergine Curry, made with soft pieces of eggplant in a sauce of tamarind, coconut, and peanuts. It came with a cucumber/tomato/red onion salad and a huge, fresh piece of onion roti on the side. The onion roti was pure perfection--the edges were puffy and chewy, while the inner part was thin and crispy; it had a nice nutty flavor from the whole wheat flour and was the perfect vessel for dunking in the curry! Overall a decent dish, but the flavors and spices were definitely toned down, and the sauce had a more sweet/mild flavorful than other Indian curries I've had.

Perfectly spiced (quite spicy actually) and very tasty. I was only able to take down half of it before I called it quits and asked for a take away. The menu is quite extensive so I'm sure you'll find whatever you need to fulfill your curry needs. The restaurant is clean and don't be alarmed if nobody is eating in there, at least the service will be on point. They do watch you the whole time but at least it's from a distance. Update: January 2010…read more We went here again a few nights ago with a friend and had a perfectly good meal. Service could have been a little more attentive, given that they weren't that busy, but the food and overall experience were fine: we just ordered mains and beer, which came to £15 including tip. ------------------------------ Situated slap-bang in the middle of Preston Street (West Brighton's main restaurant area), River Spice is a fusion Indian restaurant which stands out as a little more interesting among the other eateries. The exterior is rather dull, but the interior is much classier, decorated in warm oranges and browns, with modern furniture - the antithesis of old-fashioned Indian restaurants. The menu is sensibly limited, and includes a section for the modern Anglo-Indian 'Fusion' dishes. We opted for rather more traditional fare for our mains, the Vegetarian platter (basically a Thali) for me and a Chicken Chill Masala - a spicier version of the traditional favourite - for my other half. Both were well executed - none of that 'swimming in oil' which mars so many Indian restaurants - and my basmati rice was simply perfect (it rarely lives up to its 'fragrant' label, but here it did). More interestingly, we started with the mixed veggie starter platter, which included pieces of papri chaat, aachari paneer tikka, and pani puri crisp wheat flour shells filled with chickpeas and pomegranate and spicy mango chutney and mint water dips. This made for a light and interesting starter and, although it seems a bit pricey at £7.50 for two sharing, you get five pieces each. We had a very decent Vin du Pays red for £12, and overall really enjoyed the meal: we felt satisfied without feeling bloated, and with a tip and wine it came to £20 a head. Service was OK, although one waiter seemed a little taciturn, and when they got busier things slowed up a bit - other review sites have commented that service can be a little variable when busy, so maybe not a good choice if you are on a tight timetable or want a quick take-away. The other problem was that we had a rather voluble group of half a dozen diners nearby - the sort who lubricate the conversation with four letter words and the odd racist comment. We were, unfortunately seated a little too close to them, but thought they'd be leaving as they'd finished their meal and were in the process of paying. I realise the conduct of other customers is not easily in the staff's control, but for some reason they decided to give the group complimentary drinks, so they stayed for another 30 minutes, much to the disbelief and irritation of us and several other diners. A bad error of judgement, in my view, and it detracted from our enjoyment of the meal. Nevertheless, it's somewhere we'd happily return - we'd be a little more choosy where we sat, next time...

Orderd a large takeaway delivery.. rice portions are like children's size (clearly not the same…read moresize as every other takeaway)... the problem being we ended up with the right number of rice but half the amount of rice needed.. called up to ask why they do it differently from every other takeaway, and wanted to let them know that customers may not know beforehand and thus miss order the amount needed (x2) which doesn't provide a good customer experience.. and got rudely told by the manager "I don't care what you think, that's the way we do it, I dont care" .. If you want a normal size portion of rice, either order 2, or order elsewhere.. I won't be ordering again from someone who speaks to me that way after I've paid them over £9 for a takeaway for 4 people to be given enough rice to barely feed 2.. utter joke.

We told them that we do like spicy food, and what we got was a little on the weak side spice-wise. It was also pretty pricey in general. So I'd definitely go back and eat there again, but I wouldn't go out of my way. Food was good, service friendly, and atmosphere relaxing.
