When we go away, Tarheel is our pets destination. They get to stay together and have playtime with other dogs and then they get groomed coming home clean and trimmed and the like. AMAZING! We have used Tarheel for over 5 years now and NEVER had an issue. They are friendly, personable and very fairly priced. My dog is an older Basset Hound who needs some TLC when we are away. Not only do they give her extra "hugs" they pay special attention to older pets or pets with special needs. The kennel is not overcrowded or smelly and they also provide "spa" services should your pup need a "mani pedi." Tarheel has been a godsend to me, my husband, and especially our dog, Hank! We adopted Hank last year and once he was UTD on all his vaccines he went for his first camp day. If you value the health of your pet, DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG TO TARHEEL KENNELS. They do not know the basics of grooming. They brushed out the fur on my dog so hard, they caused multiple skin infections, and my dog can barely stand up on his paws enough to drink, we had to get him to the vet and they put him on pain meds, antibiotics, basically we ended with an over $500.00 emergency vet bill. The person on duty there even had the balls to tell me the dog was brought in that way. I can assure this dog is treated better at home than most people in general, this is a pampered pooch. read more

Took my long haired German Shepherd to Tar Heels for a much needed full service grooming. I told Chris, the groomer, not to shear the dead hair but to brush it out. Brushing out removes the dead hair producing a natural look. Shearing is often done by groomers because it is less labor intensive; but it doesn't remove dead hair creating an undesirable "fluffy powder buff" appearance. When I picked up my dog I had expectations of seeing a good grooming, however, my expectations were exceeded. Chris's grooming skills gave my dog a show quality appearance. . .he never looked so good. The lightly scented shampoo left him smelling clean and fresh. Money well spent. read more

Extremely happy with Tarheel Kennel's grooming services! My little terrier mix, Alfie, received an excellent haircut, got his nails clipped, and ears cleaned for a very reasonable price. Roy, one of the owners, listened closely to exactly what I wanted and gave Alfie the best haircut he's had in years. Additionally, this is a family owned business, and I met two of the family members. They are extremely personable and take great pride in the services they provide. In fact, Roy said if I was unhappy with anything when I got home to just bring Alfie back within the week and he would take care of it. To me this is awesome customer service. This is my second Yelp post for Tar Heel and an equally positive one. My wonderful dog Molly passed in September. I received a kind card from all Tar Heel staff. Upon finding what I thought was a qualified lab breeder for a new pup, Roy graciously offered to talk with the gentleman and ask the questions that I might not have known to ask (in the past Tar Heel had bred labs). Our puppy Joy arrived to our house a month ago. Heavens - I forgot what a handful puppies are! Turns out Roy got a lab puppy about 6 weeks older than my Joy and when Roy is caring for dogs in my neighborhood he calls and stops by with his pup so the dogs can run around the kitchen playing for a while. All at no cost to me - just a caring man with a fabulous business! As soon as Joy has all her shots she is going to day care to continue to be socialized AND have fun. Thank you Tar Heel! read more

Tarheel Kennels is fantastic. During the initial meet and greet, Roy the owner, took the time to answer all my questions and met with my dog Sandy. They are reasonably priced, and offers a-la carte services to cater specifically to your pets needs. I had opted for Sandy all night boarding w/ alternating days doggie daycamp so she can socialize w/other dogs while we were out of town. A couple days before Sandy was scheduled to go there, she got the runs, and was still unwell on the Saturday we were to drop her off. I wasn't sure if they would still take her in. I called and spoke to Roy that Saturday morning and discussed Sandy's symptoms to Roy. I was so relieved when he said to still bring her in and that he will care for her. He will keep her apart from the other dogs until she was all better. Well,on the 1st night Sandy soiled her blanket, I told them they can toss it away,but instead, they washed it and gave it back to her! They provide dog food or you can bring your own. In my case, he suggested I bring chicken and rice for her meals until her stomach was all better. Roy was very kind and caring. I will definitely use Tarheel again ! read more

Our 12 year-old Australian Cattle Dog has boarded here since she was young. Her vet recommended Tarheel, and we would not go anywhere else. Roy, his parents and all the staff have been understanding of our dog and the peculiarities of her breed, and we always know she will be well cared for. We have been taking Topper, our Goldendoodle, to Tarheel Doggie Day Care for two years. The price is reasonable and there is always someone monitoring the dogs as they play in the large fenced-in yard. Although most dogs cannot talk, they have clear signals for things they like and do not like. When I ask Topper if he wants to go to "Doggie Day Care," he jumps up and down while wagging his tail. He cannot wait to go play with the other dogs. When I pick him up, I can tell he has run himself into a state of exhaustion--which means I will have a quiet night! I have not boarded Topper overnight yet, but from knowing how well they treat the dogs, I would have no qualms about leaving Topper in their capable hands. One of the things I like the most is that the owner is always there to make sure the facilities are clean--he clearly has a passion for pets! read more
