Traverse City and the surrounding communities have done an exceptional job of creating an interlocking set of bike and pedestrian trails that will take you al over the area. The TART trail, cherry flavored like all things TVC, is the main backbone of the trail system. You can go from downtown out to the peninsula, along the lake and over t the east side near the grand traverse resort. You can get to the Boardman or circle out of the city in a big loop and explore the country. Bike rentals everywhere make getting on the trail easy and the prices during shoulder season for rentals are decent. Bring your own bike and enjoy the ultimate in value and experience. Love this feature of the Traverse City experience. Definitely a win for locals and tourists alike. read more

We rode the TART trail from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. It's a nice paved trail, well maintained and mostly flat. There's some jogging around in town, but once you're out of town expect long straight stretches. Along the trail expect to see lakes, orchards, and vineyards. We left the trail at Suttons Bay to ride the rest of Leelanau which is hillier and more challenging than the trail. Recommended! read more

I had a blast riding these trails on vacation in TC last week. We rode the trail east of the city into town, and really dug the planetary markers along the way :) The VIP on the tart trail, though, is the leelenau peninsula trail. What a beaut! I recommend taking the BATA bus from the city to the top of the trail and riding back into traverse city. Gorgeous views, and mostly downhill. Got a workout, but I also got to really enjoy the scenery. read more

I miss the TART trails in the winter when they aren't plowed! In the summer, the TART is my best friend. I love biking, rollerblading, etc. and the TART is a perfect place to be active in Traverse City. read more

During the shoulder seasons (spring and fall), I think it's less interesting, but these trails are well-maintained, well-loved, and very fun. Biking across town in Traverse City up through the Leelanau peninsula is a joy with these paved, flat, roadways that take you away from the busy and loud roads. You can go all the way form Acme to Sutton's Bay. We didn't make it quite that far, but we could have with more daylight and fuel. We saw many joggers, bikers, kids, families, and dogs. I love the TART trails up here. It makes for some splendid fun. Ideal for running, jogging, biking, and roller blading. Or just a great way to let it all go and take a stroll. Great for all ages. The ride up to Suttons Bay is absolutely amazing, and very peaceful. I also enjoy the fact that it has a route that cuts across downtown Traverse City. If you head on the East part, venturing from the Boardman Lake to Acme, you dart across a few busy intersections but don't let that stop you. There are some cool wooden bridges you come across, and a majestic view of East Bay. The TART trail ends out at Bunker Hill Road. Hopefully soon it will be connected to where it starts and ends out in Williamsburg near Turtle Creek Casino. Overall, the TART trail makes for a great adventure read more

I LOVE the TART trails in TC. The trails are well maintained and offer a scenic tour of the Traverse City area. You can go from Acme to Sutton's Bay. The paved path is great for biking, running and rollerblading. The only downside is that the path isn't paved in the winter. I just wish that more US cities had paths like the TART trail! read more

I went west yesterday. Still a great trail, but less scenic than going east from the state park area (across the street from the hotel we are staying at). Like the trail I jog at home, they have markers for the planets on this trail spaced proportionally to their orbits. In my runs here while on vacation I have seen Pluto, Neptune and Uranus. I wonder if they are going to remove the Pluto sign now that it is no longer a planet? read more

This trail is wonderful for all and is a great ride thru various terrains but none too challenging. We started at Clinch Park, brought 3 bikes and rented 1 bike from The River and followed the arrows toward Suttons Bay. Trails follow the waterfront for the first mile plus then you cross the parkway and the trail widens and is mostly shaded and is well maintained. On,y caution is when you cross the parkway. Bikers and Pedestrians need to watch out for drivers turning right on red. Look forward to going all the way to SB next time. read more
