Love this wine shop! Cute place right by the Jarvis red line. Nice light wood-themed interior, super friendly and talkative staff. The prices are fantastic as well. I've been a couple times for the Friday wine tastings and a couple times just for food and wine with friends. I've always loved everything I've tried from their rotating wine selection, and the flatbreads they offer make for a solid meal. I definitely expect to be back many times! read more

I happened to be walking by and saw they had Malbec by the glass, so I knew I had to stop in. There's cozy seating outdoors, and it was just a beautiful day to enjoy a glass of wine. There was a very nice waiter who checked on me periodically. When I visited, they only had flatbread from the menu available, so I ended up eating somewhere else, but based on the shop and their menu, they have a lot of different wine and other beverage options so I hope to go back for happy hour soon. read more

I had my first experience at Taste last weekend and wow was it amazing. The staff were truly beyond lovely - super knowledgeable about the menu and the wines as well as SO warm and welcoming. I sampled a red wine and a rose - both were fantastic. We also had their cheese plate for red wine and it was the perfect serving and pairing. They also have an excellent outdoor patio. It's right off the Jarvis red line stop which makes it super convenient to get to. read more

One of my favorite places in the neighborhood. Not only do they have a great selection of affordably priced wine and beer, their friendly and knowledgeable staff make every visit a pleasure. They also host wine tastings every Monday and Friday. It is a $5 charge that you can then use as a credit to purchase an item in the store. I went to one of their wine classes (held on the 1st Tuesday of every month) and learned so much. This was not one of those pretentious classes that make you feel like you know nothing about wine. Yet instead, an experience where strangers at the table became quick friends, delicious wines were tasted and talked about in an open forum. A great little wine and liquor store here in Jarvis Square. And they now have outdoor patio service, where they'll sell you wine, cocktails or beer to sit and drink on their patio. The cocktails come in a can, but that's okay. They did have a lot to choose from. They also supposedly have some sort of food service coming soon. read more

Friendly folks here. I'm not much of a wine aficionado, but I've poked around their food and beer wares. One time I got a bought a European-style picnic lunch of bread, salami, cheese, and beer. The brie was metallic and sticky, but the salami was very good. They sell Bennison's baguettes here, and as much as I like their pastries, the bread is not my favorite. Another time I got a Kerrygold Red Leicester cheese, a relative bargain at $5.25. One of the ladies in the shop remarked that Leicester (UK) was her hometown, and how she thought that it was funny that Kerrygold, an Irish company, produced a cheese named after an English town. Another time I was perusing the beers and got into a discussion with one of the main guys in the shop. I ended up with a brown ale from Flossmoor Station Brewery, somewhere downstate. The guy spoke so highly of their IPA that I was inspired to return for it a few weeks later. He was right--it was very good. Perhaps not $10-for-a-22-ounce-bottle excellent, but definitely worth trying the one time. In fact, I may try to visit their brewpub sometime when I'm feeling like a weekend road trip. As others have mentioned, they hold frequent wine tastings and really seem to make an effort to cultivate relationships with their customers. They are always beyond pleasant, even though I've only visited five or six times. read more

You know that saying "It's small but packs a punch", Taste located across from Luzzat (best Indian anywhere), was just a surprise as Luzzat! It is a very small shop but has all kinds of things and a great wine selection. With wine tasting every single day and over 75 different wines from all regions you will always find the perfect bottle! Pricing ranges from $8 to $50. Not a wine person check out their selection of imported beers. Not as diverse but still a nice selection. I recommend trying the Unibroue Trois Pistoles - Canada or Boddingtons - England. Not a beer person either well they do have gin & vodka (USA only) or maybe a dessert wine. What?!? You don't want anything to drink at well fine then you should check out their Meat and Cheese Deli (didn't see that coming did you). I can't even begin to tell you all that they have in here, Italian Mountain with Truffle cheese, canned Tuna from Spain, pastas, and Irish bangers & BACON!! But wait there is more!! Teas, condiments, Truffle oil, chips/crackers, and regular (imports that is) beverages. Almost forgot the sweets, cookies, cupcakes, and all kinds of candies. See what did I tell you, quite a surprise. If you're a wine lover I suggest checking out their wine-of-the-month club. $35 a month for 2 bottles isn't to bad deal. Since everything is closed on Monday, we decided to head to Taste for their complimentary Monday wine tasting. I admit, I'm not very familiar with the neighborhood but I was excited to discover such a cute wine shop. As soon as we went in, the gentleman behind the bar got us started trying six wines. He was very knowledgeable and really took the time to go into detail about each wine. On top of the informative tasting, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they offer an assortment of cheeses to enjoy with your wine order. They also have a good beer selection. Everything was so reasonably priced AND they had my beloved Crunchie bar!!! Taste is the only place I've seen one in the US so it automatically earned a soft spot in my heart. read more

An excellent addition to the neighborhood! This shop has a great selection of wine and beer, cheeses, olives, parma and serrano ham and all that tasty stuff (hence the name, I suppose). There are some English and Canadian items you can't find elsewhere (they have Sleeman IPA and Chambly... mmmmm). Eric is very cool and knows the neighborhood well, as he's a local resident. He's French, too, so you know he's got good baguettes. They stock Bennison's, probably the best show in town. It's a veritable United Nations in this joint! I met Jamie today and he's great, too... Being from the UK, he's brought some great items to the neighborhood (Hob Nobs! Branston Pickle! Old Speckled Hen!) that you can't just find anywhere in Chicago! Taste offers Monday and Friday night wine tastings! Hot vegetable soup was available today and hot chili was on the menu last time I was there... I'm not sure if they serve it every day. For what it's worth, I live in Ukrainian Village and I've been here 5 times in the last 2 months because I've been working with some clients in Rogers Park. We've got plenty of wine and gourmet stores that are a lot closer but none seem to offer the personality of this great place. read more

Walking in the area with a friend and we stumbled upon Taste...and it was closed. We did a couple of other things and then circled back...open, yes! Nice wine shop in the midst of a few other local establishments. Very cute place, they have cork boards made from old wine corks and I thought that was a pretty good idea, I might steal it (the idea). ***Update 01/03/08***** Now you can find a good selection of cheese, bread (from Benson's), fresh-sealed pasta, cured meats, and homemade soup and sandwiches. (apparently the chef is from Alsace, btw) Wine tastings are free, range from 3 to 8 selections, and are also held on Fridays from 6-8, which is ideal for a pre-night out drink. Someone is always on hand to answer questions and they'll even look into special ordering for you. ************************ After months of waiting, Taste is finally open! And just a 1/2 block from the Jarvis stop on the Red Line! For a small shop, they carry a decent selection of wines spanning the world, as well as price points. You can spend $6 or $7 for a bottle, or upwards of $20. Cheese is also for sale, both hard and soft--I was very tempted to buy some Stilton but resisted. Some take away food (paninis, deli salads, baked goods and the like) are available as are olives, olive oil, bread, and pretty much everything you would need for a last minute wine party. Tastings are going to be on Monday's starting at 6 or 6:30. (I will provide an update regarding the tastings as soon as I go to one) Two issues I have: one, the interior is a bit dark. It may be nice for a candlelit evening, but on a sunny day, it felt a bit claustrophobic. Two, I had expected more grocery items, such as Provenance offers. While they offer enough for an at-home tasting or party, there really isn't enough here to put together a gourmet meal. I don't mean that they should start carrying lamb and game hens, just ingredients to complement those items. Maybe this isn't their focus, or maybe it will happen as they grow. Who knows? Regardless, I look forward to purchasing wine here often--the trips to Evanston have been rather inconvenient. read more

They were doing a small free tasting of South African wines, and we got to sample three lovely little numbers, two of which we ended up buying because the flavors were so compelling and the prices so fair. Wine-wise, they have a pretty decent selection of inexpensive wines. (walked out with several sub-$10 bottles that were quite good). Fancy deli meats. Cheeses. Bennison's baguettes. English and other European specialty food items. They have an eating area as well for you to enjoy your food on the spot if you want... Apparently they have good chili and corn bread they serve. They frequently host wine tastings... (like. almost every weeknight I think?).... And they have various other events. Wonderful place! I stopped by here last night for a free wine tasting. The shop has a great selection of wine from all over including an excellent craft beer section. They have some cheeses, meats, and British candies as well, so that made me very happy. Wonderful service, one of the co-owners was there and very friendly and helpful. This is the epitome of what a neighborhood wine shop should be; quaint, reasonably priced, staffed with friendly knowledgeable people, and fostering their interaction with the community. I guess my only complaint would be the somewhat limited selection, but what are you gonna do? It's not Binny's, its a local shop just down the street, and actually they have a surprisingly diverse selection for such a small place. On my most recent trip I noticed they have significantly increased the beers they stock much to my pleasant surprise. We're not talking 6ers of miller lite in a place like this but Kwak, Fin du Monde, yes please! I'm gonna have to start coming here far more often to get my rare beer fix without having to travel. The staff is really the icing on the cake here, very friendly, very knowledgeable, more than happy to talk wine with you all day. One of the owners in particular - Jamie(?) seems to have tried every wine in the place, I've repeatedly blindly purchased on his recommendations alone and have never been steered wrong. I just wish I drank more wine at home so I had an excuse to go more often! read more

I've meant to go here for so long, honestly I have. Fortunately, the foreign blond and I ran out of wine one afternoon this past weekend, and I was dispatched to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. So I traveled the few blocks north to Jarvis and, frankly, had a hard time making it out of there. I had a wonderful conversation with the owner (one of the owners?) about some of our favorite wines and ultimately managed to come home with half a dozen very interesting bottles, four of which were in the $10-12 range! The experience was capped off with a selection of very nice cheeses that rounded out our evening nicely. This is a killer addition to Rogers Park. And isn't it nice to find wine in our neighborhood that doesn't come in idividual paper bags? read more

You don't get better than this place. I am so thankful they've opened up in RoPa. A fantastic selection that goes above and beyond wine. The fact they keep bangers, rashers, and black pudding in stock makes me love the place. The food selection in there, while small, is great and not out of reach. As for the wine, it's damn good. You can get a $10 bottle and a $50 and both will be awesome. If you have a question on specific bottle or a general one on wine, the staff are great at helping out without any pretension. The spirits and beer selection are a little weak but it also isn't exactly their thing, so I forgive them. Overall, when you need a bottle, some cheese, or the makings for a Irish breakfast that won't break your bank, this is the place to go. read more

First visit tonight! My husband and I live off the Loyola stop, and this was our first time venturing up to Jarvis. We were specifically looking for RP wine tastings, previously venturing up to Evanston for this. Not only was this location closer, but it was free! Unheard of for me. That's what brought us here. But we stayed for the service and hospitality! There were 6 wines for tasting. It seemed like everyone was out for a good time: the wine vendor, store owner, and all other customers! We had a few extra pours, agreed on our favorite, and bought a bottle. Next time we plan to come for a Monday tasting, and take advantage of the $5 burger deal next door. I absolutely love this place. You'll find some incredible buys on wines that taste ten-times the price. Not kidding. Explore some unknown grapes and be surprised. Beer selection is amazing also. I've been studying (drinking too) wines for 25 years from all over the world's wine countries. This is it. Owners, Steve and his wife, Linda - the best! Debbie makes incredible delights - chocolates and other sugary delights. Her hubby Jaimie will turn you onto some amazing wines with an expert opinion. The other owners are awesome as well. A lovely little wine shoppe, with a nice spread of moderately-priced wines, some beers and ciders, and various tasty nibblies. (Prosciutto? Roasted figs? Cornichons? Oh my, yes.) The wines themselves don't favor any one geographical location overmuch, and tend to lean towards a pleasantly high quaffability quotient instead of veering towards either pole of self-pickling (musty snobbery on one end, and "get me loaded up on that box o'vino" on the other). It's also a fun regular spot to visit for its Monday and Friday tastings, a reflection of a place where the staff is helpful, engaged, friendly, not pushy, and likes hearing about a fellow wine drinker's explorations of various vintages. In short, another wee wonder in Rogers Park that's delightful for more reasons than its being within walking distance. read more

Finally... I spent months peeking in the windows and when they finally opened I was thrilled. I still am thrilled. Taste has a smallish selection of wines, but they are a good variety of well chosen wines in a reasonable price range. They range from $8 and up. I have bought some great cheeses and they have a few deli selections that look good, but I have not yet tried them. I have been in at leat once a week since they opened, and have always been treated really well. Super nice folks and I am so happy that I don't have to buy a last minute bottle of mediocre wine at Dominicks anymore or trudge all the way to Andersonville. I do love my neighborhood. read more

The wine selection is great and the prices are very reasonable. The cheese selection isn't that wide but the quality is much better than anywhere else and the prices are, again, great. But, my favorite routine is to 1) stop by Taste for a six pack of either a) Sleeman (tasty, tasty Canadian ale) or b) Old Speckled Hen (tasty, tasty English ale) and then 2) take my ale across the street to Luzzat (hole in the wall but heavenly curry house) for a perfect meal. I can't think of a better way to spend an evening or $20. If you haven't been over to this area lately (Jarvis El stop aka Jarvis Square), you really need to stop by. This really is one of the best kept secrets of Chicago. I just moved to the neighborhood from Wicker Park and, although I'm clearly biased, I have to say that I really, really love my new neighborhood. Not missing Wicker Park at all. I wandered in here with my husband after placing an order at Luzzat (you should read that review, too ;) ) and used our 15 minute wait to look around at Taste. The selection is smaller than say, a Binny's, but the staff here are so friendly and love to talk wine and food. They also have a great selection of specialty foods (think imported cheese and meat, jarred fruits and unusual cookies and things). He was not pushy, but checked in with me when I arrived and than let me shop as I wished. When I asked for information he was incredibly helpful and informed.
