Kathy and the crew are awesome. I learned how to ride with Kathy when I was about 12 yrs old. I am…read morenow 65. She taught me English and Western riding. I was able to attend horse shows with her and had the most positive experiences. Love ya Kathy. It's a family at the farm. MeriEllen from Massachusetts and now NH.

As we all get older, we create bucket lists. My wife and I sat down and put together a bucket list…read more One of her items which she considered to be a simple one was for us to go horseback riding. She had been horseback riding as a kid and really wanted to relive that experience with me. I on the other hand had never been on a horse before. I didn't want to tell her that I was feeling nervous or that I had some concerns about getting on a horse. But I did tell the lady who owns the farm privately and she helped me get comfortable. She helped select the horses from my wife and I, and although my wife had experienced as a child, the owner stated our older bodies are much different now and she picked a nice gentle horse for my wife and I. She took extra time to show me how to properly sit on the horse, keep my feet in the stirrups and hold onto the reins. In talking with friends they explained at most farms you normally get led by a human being around the circle a couple of times and that's horseback riding. At Spring Tide Farm they took us out and we rode the horses! The owner was a patient woman who was so kind to her animals as well as us humans. She explained she's been doing this for 50 years and the horses are like her children. She explained that her love for horses, not only extends to her horses, but those that she boards. The time seem to fly by, my wife and I had a great experience together. Time for the next thing on our list.

Overall, it was a fun experience out on a lovely day with my best friend! I think that Jan is very…read moreknowledgeable and has a cool program. Ambrosia was so kind and welcoming and good with the horses! I did not book the experience, but I was more expecting a trail ride that you show up at a certain time, ride for an hour, and then head out. I was not expecting to stay 2 and a half hours tacking up, grooming, and bathing. As a horse person myself, I do not mind the work that goes into caring for a horse throughout the whole process- but it was just not what I was expecting. So be prepared to take the thorough time to learn all aspects of grooming, tacking, and aftercare. The ride itself was fun and exciting in a new location on a new horse on some beautiful trails. Jan was very knowledgeable on the areas we were riding, and pointed out some cool beaver dams. I rode Gem, and my friend rode Chili who were very well behaved equine partners. You can tell that they are well loved and treated with kindness and respect. It was a very hot and humid day, and I liked that we took walking breaks for the horses to cool down a bit and it wasn't too strenuous for the horses. As a horse person, I believe that the owner knows what is best for the horses. I am aware that I don't have the extensive knowledge and experience as Jan, and she does what is best for her horses. With that being said, I had some minor concerns. I was slightly concerned with the lack of tendon protection on the bush-whacking part of the trail ride. I was also concerned with the saddle fit on the horses. I am not a saddle fitter and I acknowledge that, but there was minimal wither clearance on the saddle that was put on Gem. I understand this is a riding school and saddle fitting to horse and rider can be an insurmountable task, and that gem did not show any visible signs of discomfort. There was a girth rub on gem, and I wish there was a fuzzy sleeve on the girth or maybe some shoulder stretches to help prevent further rubbing. Jan definitely knows her stuff, and seems to be a very experienced horse person. She can be gruff and stern at some times. I do recognize that safety is at the forefront of her business, but I wish she spoke in a more professional manner and explained more on what her expectations were. Again, it was a cool experience to ride a different horse in a different location and get to enjoy horses, friends, and beautiful scenery. My complaints are minor, but I do think there is room for improvement. Thank you ambrosia and Jan for a fun Saturday morning!
