Tony, at TC Camera Repair: Tony Campos, 630-960-4020, http://www.tccamerarepair.com/ ...repaired my 24-70mm Canon lens. I bought the lens when it first came out, I guess 8 years ago. Basically, it was jammed stuck at 70mm! Tony took it apart, and I can sort of explain what the issue was: he said it looked as if I dropped it because one of the rollers was cracked and damaged. I just remembered as I was writing the email, the only thing I dropped was my Tamarac bag because the clip holding the right shoulder strap broke. The bag hit the ground. And now I remember, the lens filter for my 70-200mm lens and the lens filter for the 24-70mm lens shattered. If I would not have had the lens filters on all my lenses, the lenses would have been scratched and maybe even worse. The lens caps did NOTHING! I know some of you don't believe in lens filters; however, I buy the BEST I can. If I did not use lens filters, I would have scratched my lenses by just walking around events! Well, because I dropped my bag which is the best Tamarac bag with a space for a 17" laptop, the screws inside the lens came loose and one of them scratched the automatic focus board in the lens. He mentioned, since this lens is on its third generation, mine was the first, the parts are impossible to get unless you have another lens that is not usable that has the part you need. Well, no such luck. Tony fixed the focus board, even though he warned me it is a very difficult thing to fix because it is made in layers. Got the lens back, and it WORKS BETTER than it did for the past several years!!! I mean it focuses faster and more accurately!!! The real test is the 3-day job I have coming up this weekend! I bought a used Nikon F2 Photomic from a Japanese seller on Ebay that I wanted to have checked out. I came to Tony after having bought a camera off eBay and finding it broken. The camera also came with 2 lenses, a 200mm and a 135mm lens, with one having fungus on the inside of the elements. He was able to repair the camera and cover it under his own warranty, so I could send it back if need be. He was not able to clean the lens that had fungus and told me that it just wasn't worth it to clean. I was okay with that and he even was able to give me a replacement lens to shoot with. Even now, the 200mm lens was dropped and had to be repaired. I was able to rinse and repeat the process of sending my lens in and getting it back within a few days. Before I sent him my camera and lenses I thought about sending it back to the seller, but now that I've sent it to him it has a lot more value to me as my primary camera. I talked to Tony about getting a CLA. We talked over the phone about his services and he gave me a quote of $35 + shipping both ways. I sent him two cameras, and all he did was clean their exteriors. One of them even had a film advanced counter issue when I got it back. He also charged $10 to change some mirror foam which I did not ask for him to do. Not worth it. I found another issue with a Nikon FM2 having some light seal material behind the shutter. The material was bent and it was causing a dark spot on the film in the corner. read more

Thirty-five years ago I was given a Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AIS lens for (then) a Nikon 35mm camera. It's been in storage since. I 'accidentally' found it as I was unpacking my very old boxes from the garage. It was absolutely 'frozen' from the grease totally dried up on the helicoid focus mechanism. Furthermore, the glass inside was dirty and very noticeable fungus grew from the edges. I called Tony, followed his instructions for getting it to him (easy as pie). Within hours of receiving it, Tony had it apart, diagnosed completely, and was on the phone with me. Good news all around! The lens is worth ~ $300. I had no investment in it. So, for less than $150, I had a perfectly operating, exceptional piece of glass -- and one of the nicest that Nikon had produced. In fact, it looked so good that when I opened it, my wife (always mindful of my spending habits on camera equipment), accused me of buying it new!!!
