House salad with a very light, mostly vinegar vinaigrette dressing

Sesame chicken is a pretty straightforward dish, at least where I come from: lightly battered pieces of chicken first deep fried then stir fried with broccoli in a delicious sweet sauce, sprinled with sesame seeds and served with white rice. Hungry from a day of cruising and hiking Milford Sound, my daughter and I decided to split an order of "Sesame chicken" for NZ$16 at this establishment. I asked the nice lady behind the counter taking our order if we could have extra broccoli in the dish (as I usually do at Chinese food places). She looked confused and said sesame chicken does not come with broccoli; if we wanted vegetables we would have to order a whole extra vegetable dish as well. Puzzled, I just ordered a side garden salad ($5) so we'd be able to eat SOME veggies. After paying $21 cash (no credit cards accepted), we proceeded to wait over 25 minutes until our order was finally ready for "take away." Taking the bag with our food in styrofoam containers, throwing in some chopsticks and napkins, we quickly made our way to a little garden with picnic tables to enjoy this dinner overlooking beautiful Lake Te Anau. Good news: they used white meat chicken, always a plus. Bad news: the chicken pieces were bone dry without sauce. There appeared to be perhaps honey at the bottom of the container? Bland and tasteless, but I could tell the chicken was decently cooked--there was just no flavor to speak of! My daughter said it was just bad and did not want to eat it. I even closed the container and shook it up trying coat the pieces with something, but to no avail. There was no rice included either. Really? The salad was actually nice and fresh, but the vinaigrette dressing tasted like basic vinegar, again not much flavor, but they did include cashews and red bell pepper pieces, a nice touch. In an attempt to rescue the meal, I ran into a nearby grocery store and bought a bottle of Thai sweet chili sauce which we poured over the now-much-cooler chicken pieces. Success! After some discussion we felt our experience with this place merited 2 stars overall, especially considering the premium prices they are asking and the length of time it took for them to prepare these absurdly simple dishes with no flavor.

I guess have to pay extra for it. We ordered the sesame chicken and the beef and noodles dish. Both meals came out fairly quickly and we ate them right away cause we were starving. The chicken was a little on the bland side but the beef and noodles were very tasty. The waiters never came to check up on us and once their brought us our food and tea, they never came back to even bring us some water. We had to try very hard to flag someone down to bring us water as well as the check when we were done eating. A big group left right before us so it really wasn't that crowded at all. I think they just didn't care about us. What was also strange was that the head waiter and another gentleman at a big table across the restaurant were literally screaming at each other. It was in Chinese so we couldn't tell why they were yelling but even in the US I have never encountered anything quite like it. We were happy to get out of the restaurant. I left it 4 stars because despite all of this the food was pretty good and the price was fair. There were not many food options in this town for dinner and it saved us from going to a super expensive high-end restaurant which we never enjoy.

Big spot for semi-authentic Chinese food…read more This is your classic colossal Chinese place- you'll find tanks with live lobster and plenty of large tables with lazy susans. It's popular with both Chinese and Western tourists, as the bilingual menu might suggest. That menu includes lots of meat, poultry, and seafood dishes, with vegetables and soups also on the list. Sichuan dishes are prominent, but there are also American Chinese deep fried classics. On to my food- I had the wonton soup, the small bowl which turned out to be a generous portion of broth and three large wontons. The soup was flavorful, although the little floating vegetable bits weren't great. The wontons were nice, ample and beefy. Also had the Chinese sizzling steak, which was nice and juicy but the sauce was a bit sweet. The Sichuan Chicken was good- spicy enough and well cooked. An ample portion of rice is provided when ordered. Service was decently fast though there were a couple mistakes and missed requests. 4 stars

Still we ordered a few appetizers, like Chicken Satay, Prawn toast, Malaysian cabbage and we added Duck to that meal because it was suggested that the Chicken will come spicier. Anyway, the Chicken Satay is yummy with three skewers. However, the peanut sauce that came with this didn't taste like there's any peanut in the sauce as it was very pale in color. We, also, felt there's way too much sesame seeds and too little shrimp for the prawn toast with the Sriracha mayo.

Especially considering this is in the downtown area, I can see it getting packed for dinner. I loved the ambiance and decor inside the restaurant. I got the laksa after reading many reviews recommending this dish. It was on the spicy side, and it was good, but I wouldn't say it was outstanding. Next time I would try something else. I was intrigued by the Portuguese custard tarts, as that wasn't expected from a Malaysian restaurant, but I was already planning on getting dessert later, so I skipped them this time.

There is a gift shop next door. The menu sign in Chinese characters mentioned handmade dumplings, so I figured, why not give it a try? When we walked in, there were only two staff members and no other customers. I ordered two kinds of boiled dumplings: lamb with carrots, and pork with prawn. My partner had the barbecue pork with noodles, and my friend ordered barbecue pork with rice. Prices were $24.50 for the noodles, $21.50 for the rice, and $19.50 for nine dumplings. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. The portions were quite small for the price, and the dumplings were all mixed together on the plate, making it impossible to tell which was which. My partner's noodle soup was extremely salty yet bland at the same time. When I asked about the type of noodles, the cashier, who spoke Mandarin told me they were Cantonese egg noodles. Being from Hong Kong and familiar with authentic Cantonese cuisine, I can confidently say they were not egg noodles. Overall, it was a quick stop for something to eat, but given the small portions and lackluster flavors, we ended up heading to Mrs. Woolly's General Store afterward to fill up which was a gem!
