My daughter has been attending Team Kwon Taekwondo, and we couldn't be happier with our experience. Master Kwon and Master Jasmine are outstanding instructors who truly care about their students' growth and development. The classes are extremely well organized, structured, and engaging. Beyond teaching excellent taekwondo techniques, they emphasize important life values such as discipline, respect, focus, perseverance, and good character. The positive environment they create helps children build confidence while having fun and staying active. It's clear that Master Kwon and Master Jasmine are passionate about what they do, and they do a fantastic job connecting with students of all ages. We have seen tremendous growth in our daughter, both in her martial arts skills and in her overall confidence and discipline. I highly recommend Team Kwon Taekwondo to any family looking for a supportive, professional, and high-quality martial arts program.

We love Master Lee and Master Jo!…read more We were looking for a TKD class and a friend from baseball/ school told us about Scholar Athlete. I was bummed bc their original location was literally 2 mins from our house but we decided to check them out anyway. I called and spoke with Master Jo. I told him we had 3 boys (friends) that were interested in trying. He told me about the amazing deal they were having in May ($50 for the month or 8 classes) The 3 boys started together and have been having a blast since. In the beginning, it's always overwhelming especially for 5 yr olds to walk in, as everyone else seems to know what they're doing and everyone is speaking Korean! But Master Lee and Master Jo ensured that ALL the new members had some focus time, felt welcomed, felt supported, and encouraged. About midway through our trial month the kids tested for their white belts, and the official membership was discussed. This part of the process is a bit strange -- They don't advertise their membership prices/ options. Only master Lee discusses this with you in his office. You can't write anything down or take a picture. Why that is? I don't know. But the pricing is very reasonable compared to other TKD places and karate places we had spoken to previously. You have the option to choose between 2 classes a week or 3. We started off with 2 but ended up switching to 3 because I wanted my kid to have more practice and retention esp in the beginning. Not only are they teaching TKD basics, there's so many more principals that are taught. Listening, respect, focus, and confidence. Discipline of course. The studio/ dojo itself is very minimal. It's not a big fancy place. It's in a strip mall that I normally wouldn't go to, but none of that really matters bc of the actual teachings and learnings. Now, we've also witnessed Master Lee disciplining some of his more senior students - and I'm not sure if I agree with the style in which he does that. I'm not to judge bc maybe that works, that's why he has so many great students - but I do wish that he didn't do it in front of the younger kids? It's weird. He equally belittles the older students (like his protoge's) but he's so encouraging and supportive of the students too. lol it's interesting to witness but just something to note. Oh yes the only real concern I would flag is that -- I wish they would CLEAN THE DAMN MATS. Our kid leaves with black feet every time and it's gross esp when they do stretches and puts their face down on it (I've literally told my kid to never ever put his face on it) Anyways we love it here!

The Grand Master (Master Yang) is an incredible teacher. He does an excellent job of breaking down all of the lessons into small steps and developing students of all skill levels. Grand Master Yang's passion for Tae Kwon Do truly brings a positive and fun energy to each class. From the leadership to the students, everyone I've shared the mat with at Shambhala has been supportive and welcoming. It feels great to learn within a community of students who enjoy sharing their knowledge as well as helping each other grow as martial artists. From adults to children, I've seen students of all ages and backgrounds learning Tae Kwon Do at Shambhala. There are programs that are designed for all skill levels and age groups. The facility is spacious and always clean. This really helps reinforce a welcoming atmosphere. My favorite aspect of learning at Shambhala is understanding the philosophies that are taught alongside each skill level. Each belt carries a unique philosophy (Example: White Belt = HONOR). Within our classes, we learn the deeper meanings of each philosophy and how to apply them into our lives. This emphasis on personal development is what has stood out to me the most at Shambhala Tae Kwon Do. I was excited to discover a martial arts school that not only focuses on developing self-defense skills, but also introduces quality of life principles that help bring clarity and empowerment to each student. This truly feels like a comprehensive martial arts education. Reflecting on my Shambhala journey, it's rewarding to see the progress I have made over the past year. I have noticed several improvements in my personal life including: greater self-confidence & happiness. I've also discovered a new passion in Tae Kwon Do. There is a sense of joy and fulfillment in learning & developing a new skill. I'm thankful that I've found a learning program with a great community and leadership team that have helped me better understand the wholeness of being a martial artist.

This review has been long overdue, and I'm so glad I finally had the chance to write it…read more About a year ago, I decided I wanted my boys to start jiu-jitsu. As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. Thank you, Teragi, for creating such an incredible environment for our children. We are so grateful to be part of the Teragi family, and I couldn't recommend this academy more.

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.

9/5/26 Progress report…read more Humorous, strict, and kind Masters As I mentioned in my previous reviews, Master Yoo is always a joy to watch. He has so much personality in the way he teaches. He animated voice, different pitches and tones, and facial expressions really keep the students engaged (and the parents too, speaking for myself!). He can definitely be loud when it comes to training and those paddle claps, but he also knows when to soften his approach. It's a delicate balance, and I think he does a great job reading the room and paying attention to the students' responses before deciding how to respond. I've also really enjoyed seeing Master Y become more comfortable leading the class over the past few weeks. He is very knowledgeable and patient with the students. I often see him walking around the room correcting their forms and demonstrating movements to make sure everyone understands and is training correctly. It's been nice watching his confidence grow as a teacher. Black belt student teachers We've had the opportunity to learn from two fabulous black belt student teachers: Andrew, who we've had for several classes now, and Lilian, who we've had for one class so far. Both are kind, encouraging, disciplined, and great role models in the classroom. They demonstrate beautiful form and are always very focused and precise when showing the students how to perform a task. They also bring such a positive energy into the classroom. My girls are especially motivated whenever they get to have class with them. They come home wanting to practice more and do better at each class, which I think says a lot about the impact these student teachers have on them. Improving punches & kicks My girls continue to be very motivated to improve their punches and kicks and, more importantly, to perform them correctly. So far, they've learned the traditional front kick, axe kick, and roundhouse kick, along with the jumping versions of these kicks. With each class, I can see them becoming more comfortable and confident with the movements. It's been really fun watching them go from figuring out the basics to getting more confident with each technique. Basic One & Their First Belt Test The girls mastered Basic One in preparation for their belt test and have also gotten to see demonstrations of Basic Three and Basic Five from some of the upper-level students. Needless to say, they were EXTREMELY excited to earn their new belts. We practiced with them day and night leading up to the test! For the belt testing itself, there were multiple color groups, and I definitely underestimated how many people would show up early. I originally thought the testing would be completed in stages, but it ended up being everyone in one class, which made for a very packed waiting area. More than a few parents, myself included, ended up watching the testing from outside the classroom. And let me tell you... it was a little brutal outside. It happened to be one of the hottest and most humid days, AND we had to deal with mosquitoes attacking us. But we all survived! I also found that the white belt testing was a little less intense than what we had anticipated. But honestly, I think that's a good thing. It probably wouldn't be very encouraging for a first belt test to feel overwhelmingly difficult. The goal is to challenge the kids while also giving them that first taste of accomplishment and confidence to push harder. The girls were absolutely thrilled to receive their new belts, and they were especially excited to take a photo with both Masters afterward. Definitely a proud parent moment! Self-Defense After belt testing week, there has been more focus on self-defense, which I really appreciate. The girls are learning to use their voices by speaking loudly and confidently, followed by getting into a defensive position. They're also learning the difference between an attack position and a defense position, and more importantly, understanding when and why each position is used. I really like that self-defense is being introduced early and that the focus isn't just on physical movements, but also on awareness, confidence, and using their voices. Respect & focus One of my favorite parts of class is how it always ends with a team huddle. Master Yoo reviews the students' focus tasks, talks about what they did well, and points out areas they can continue to improve. When they do a good job, they can earn their strip colors, which gives the kids a little extra motivation to stay focused and do their best. It's a simple way to reinforce respect, focus, discipline, and teamwork while ending class on a positive note. My girls continue to have so much fun, and I love seeing their confience and skill grow with each class! PS. It is referral month if your kids want to try something new!

Enter Taekwondo Spirit. Master Lee = Amazing. We chose this studio over two years ago and I have watched my kids grow in body, mind and Spirit (no pun intended). The staff here from Master Cyril in the older days through the current staff have been nothing short of great. They are delicate where they need to be and tough when needed. They very much specialize in children. The studio has built and maintains a community feeling. They have definitely served the youth of La Mirada and the surrounding community by teaching discipline, confidence and self defense. They even participate in local tournaments if you are ready and they echo that sentiment. The sport of Taekwondo is definitely a great introduction to martial arts that develops flexibility, strength and balance. I'm very appreciative to Taekwondo Spirit for what my children have learned through them. Humility seems to flow through this place with nothing but respect given by and to everyone. The studio is small so understandable, just sad. I realize teaching autistic kids is not their specialty, but I had gone to one other local studio in La Habra that basically turned us away because they didn't want to do the hands on work it takes to teach a child that lacks imitation skills, while another in Fullerton was extremely overpriced and for only 15 minute sessions in addition to being too far. I hope to come back to this studio soon if they have the availability.
