While all of the instructors there were solid, there was just something about Joey that really stood out. He's an incredibly down-to-earth, approachable person easy to talk to, easy to joke with, and someone who makes training feel comfortable without losing focus or structure. Whether we were drilling techniques, working judo throws, or talking between rounds, he always brought a positive and welcoming energy to the mats. As an instructor, Joey is very attentive and patient. He takes the time to work with everyone, breaks techniques down clearly, and makes sure people actually understand what they're doing. One thing I really respected was how aware he was of his students as people, not just training partners. While jiu-jitsu naturally comes with bumps and injuries and pushing through can be part of the process, Joey also understood that some injuries genuinely require time to heal. He paid attention when people were out, checked in on them, and made it clear that health and recovery mattered. I experienced that firsthand when I was injured he was quick to check in and ask how my recovery was going. That kind of awareness and care goes a long way and isn't something you always see. I also had the chance to train at another Gracie Barra location in Missouri where Joey's dad taught, and he was excellent as well. When his dad came to teach at the O'Fallon location, that same welcoming, disciplined, and supportive approach was clear. It's easy to see that strong values and teaching mindset run in the family. I'm genuinely excited to see Joey and his dad open their own academy in Shrewsbury. Knowing the kind of instructors and people they are, I have no doubt it's going to be an excellent place to train. First off, Professor Kyle is great. He was very friendly and welcoming. He introduced me around to a lot of the guys and game me a tour of the gym. You can see what type of vibe a gym has by seeing how the students relate to him during class. Here, you can tell they respect Kyle Watson, but are also friendly with Kyle and there's plenty of friendly banter. Kyle is very attentive throughout the entire class and the class is put together with a lot of thoughtfulness. Kyle is attentive the entire time and super helpful in giving instruction and tips. 2. The vibe of the gym is great. Here, you'll find competitor and hobbyists. Everyone was very kind and skilled. No one is off to take off your head and you can tell there are some skilled people on the matts that can turn it on (if they wanted). Great number of training partners. I can see guys getting good here pretty quickly. And if I lived around here, this would be the gym I would pick. Chill vibe but people here work hard. 3. Facilities. This place is HUGE. Upstairs and downstairs mat space. Mens and women's lockers. Showers. Plenty of space to put your gym bag. The place is CLEAN throughout. 4. Schedule. An underestimated aspect of someone choosing a gym is the schedule. Bottom line, if there aren't a lot of options, you're more likely to stop training. When I arrived, an employee had me fill out paperwork and provide my card information. I trained that day and returned once more, but the experience was disappointing -- no coaching, no feedback, and overcrowded classes where you could barely move. I'm new to boxing and received zero instruction from any of the coaches during either visit. I decided to cancel before the end of the 7-day trial. When I called the owner, he instantly became defensive and claimed I'd signed a 12-month contract. When I reminded him he promised a trial, he said he was "on a roof" and hung up on me. He later admitted that his employee shouldn't have signed me up for a membership and said he would refund me. I provided my name as he requested, but he never issued the refund and stopped responding to my messages. As for the facility itself, it was unclean and overcrowded. The floors were covered in sweat, shoes and clothes were piled in the hallway, and the air was stifling. Safety seemed like an afterthought -- I even had to buy used hand wraps from an employee because no one had a key to the new ones. In the end, I was charged for a "free trial" that offered no training, no professionalism, and no respect. I've had to dispute the charge with my bank. I would strongly recommend finding another gym that values honesty, cleanliness, and actual instruction.
