From the entrance you walk down a staircase lined with posters for various cover bands like Bob Dylan and the Beatles. The space downstairs is large but broken into 4 or 5 rooms. The night we were in an Italian blues band was playing and it seemed like everyone seated had gotten there early enough for spots. It's hard to see the band from the side rooms so we stood in front of the bar. This place got packed and if we had moved we would have definitely lost our spot. Drinks are on the pricey side and it got super hot with all the people but this was a great time. Everyone was having lots of fun and it gives you a glimpse into an underground Italian live music venue!

The temperature of the tentacle, perfecto! flavor, perfecto! We also chose one of the 3 burgers available. Think fine dining meets burger. The portion is modest, but adequate served with pomme frite. Burger temp completely slipped my mind, but the burger arrived slightly less than medium-rare (my ideal temp). A juicy flavor punch that was not gamey nor industrial. One can tell that these patties are ground in house, blended, and seasoned ready to serve. Don't get stuck on the first page, explore the entire menu before diving in. It may be worth ordering several plates to share. I would expect that you will not be disappointed. Couple the creative drinks with eclectic, explorative food, and you have a winner in Fregene. Got there around 11pm and the bouncers said things don't liven up til around 2am! WTH! I'm usually asleep by then. So we wander off to a neighboring bar for some drinks and return a little later. From the outside you'd hardly think anyone was inside but boy was that an illusion. It was packed! We were there on a Thursday night and the music was primarily US hip hop. There were bboys on the dance floor and people were dancing their asses off! Personally, it was way too crowded. This is the type of place where you'll accidentally get elbowed or get a drink spilled on you. Oh and don't even think of having to go to the bathroom. There is ONE bathroom and the line was ridic....if you have to go, FYL! On a good note, the crowd was very diverse and everyone was friendly for the most part. Alexanderplatz which is the premiere jazz club in Rome charges $18 euros for a month membership - no cover after that - and $12 per drink. So once you have paid your monthly cover charge, you can hear all the jazz you want for free - or if need be for $12 euros a drink At Alexanderplatz, the performances are legendary with some of the most innovative and technically amazing musicians in Rome. We dropped over $150 euros at Gregory's. We got a perfectly reasonable yeoman guitarist. But nothing like the artistic lions that routinely perform over at Alexanderplatz. Now to be fair, we had dinner at Gregory's and we never eat at Alexanderplatz. The standard "sushi dinner" was perfectly reasonable yeoman sushi. There was so little of it that we both had to order a la carte dishes afterwards. The extra extras seriously expanded the final tab. * * * One argument in Gregory's favor: their bar is extraordinary. The bar at Alexanderplatz is mediocre. Gregory's charges top dollar for its bar offerings, but what they mix and what is in their bottles is worth every single euro they ask for. I would be perfectly happy to just go to the bar, and order a few premium beverages. I would hear my wallet cry. But I would know that I was drinking supremely well in return for my investment. Fortunately, the bar is downstairs from the club. I would not have to put up with the shenanigans in the club. * * * The problem with the club is the crowd. At most, one third of the customers are actually there to listen to jazz. The room is filled with tourists taking selfies. There are also hot-daters playing snuggle-buns. Many of them will leave mid-set so they can go back to the hotel. Gregory's is less about the music and more about selling happy memories of Rome. * * * Alexanderplatz gets a mostly Italian crowd. You are looking as musicians, music critics, academics, and all purpose artsy types - as well as normal Italian human beings who just want to hear fine music. The music is taken very very seriously. Yeah, there are usually two or three tables with good time Charlies who are doing the phone recording, party hearty thing. But this is 8% of the audience at Alexanderplatz as opposed to 70% of the audience at Gregory's. To be fair to the crowd at Gregory's, the music at Alexanderplatz is simply better. The jazz at Alexanderplatz is capable of transfixing even philistines with tin ears. Gregory's jazz doesn't put that much on the table. But the crowd at Alexanderplatz sets me up for listening to mystic, complex music with the highest level of attention and aesthetic receptiveness. The crowd at Gregory's just gets me irritated. * * * If you are in Rome with a hot date, go to Gregory's. Be prepared to shell out the bucks. * * * If you are in Rome with someone who can truly appreciate once-in-a-lifetime musical experiences, take them to Alexanderplatz. After you talk about the music for half an hour after the concert, You can still go back to the hotel. Just figure that the hotel will be the second best part of the night.

The major classical music venue for Rome…read more The music that is booked there is a mix. Much of it is outstanding. We have heard magic. We have heard "leave-while-you-cans". * * * Architectually, the complex is an epic fail. Italy has tremendous architecture. The Citta Della Musica most assuredly does not make the A list. * * * The Auditorium Complex was meant to be a cross between London's South Bank and London's Barbican. It is like the South Bank because there are many concert halls involved in related buildings. It is like the Barbican because the complex is Brutalist. Make that failed Brutalist. Brutalism when it works combines two fascinating aspects. 1) An exterior profile that is striking and powerful. You can't get the basic shape out of your mind. 2. Complex interweaving interiors that are non-linear, difficult to manoever, but expose interlinkages of space in non-trivial surprising ways. Rome's Citta della Musica flunks majorly on both counts. 1 Elaborated) The profiles are three egg concrete egg shapes. They look like every basketball stadium you have seen in the United States. Nothing new or exciting in the shape. The architect did not allow for what water would do to the concrete. So what was once new and resplendent and white is now gray and dingy. On a powerful form such as Boston City Hall or the Barbican, Vertical sharp ridges on the walls or other parallel forms draw water away from the concrete allowing the concrete to maintain its original color. Plus the form is bold enough to be interesting regardless of the color of the concrete. Here you just get Cleveland blah. 2 Elaborated) There is no real twisting or turning of forms. Just inconvenience with no spatial discovery. The snack bars for all of the many halls is on the far right of the complex. So for many shows, refreshments are simply too far away to get. There is no great discovery in having to walk through three identical lobbies to get to water when you are thirsty. Most of the halls involve mandatory climbing of endless stairs. And I do mean endless. And I do mean mandatory. Anyone who has been to an old school concert hall like Carnegie Hall and has bought the cheap seats knows all about climbing endless stairs to get to your seat. Nothing new or innovative here. 3) The two plusses - credit where credit is due. 3a) The lobbies are in beautiful red brick. They are high, deep, and expansive. Those are wonderful public spaces. 3b) The acoustics are outstanding. Most of the great European symphony concert halls have great acoustics. So this is not so distinctive. Still, there are some surprisingly dead concert halls in the United States. * * * For the right performance of a Haydn symphony, a Strauss tone poem or a Szymanowski concerto, none of the failed Brutalism will matter. Music assuages the imperfections of architecture.

You have to make a reservation, as this is a private club. How intriguing! The club opens at 9:00 PM and closes at 4:00 AM. So, we made a reservation for a Sunday evening. It is located down a dimly lit street off the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II - adding more to the intrigue. There is really no signage except on the door there is a brass plaque that says "Prof. Jerry Thomas." You ring the bell, the door is answered, you give your name and the password (Yes, there is a password to get in), and you are admitted to the club. There is a €5 per person annual membership fee. We were warmly greeted by Roberto and seated at a comfortable table. This speakeasy held about 25 people, with two bartenders mixing drinks. Euro and Roberto saw to our every need and were excellent! When my husband asked if they had rye whisky on the bar, Roberto suggested he go to the bar and look. They had probably 14 different bottles of rye, but none from Maryland. When he asked for a rye Manhattan, Roberto brought over a bottle of their "house" rye, which was made especially for them. After he mentioned that if his Manhattan was made using their house rye, the cost would be €40. My husband quickly declined and opted for a regular rye Manhattan for €15! I am not much of drinker, so they made me an Amaretto. Both were served on the rocks, except this time, each had one huge ice cube - we had never seen such large cubes before. We both thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Speakeasy and told Roberto we would be back again. It was such an interesting, fun and enjoyable concept.
