Maybe it was because we had just came from a super friendly shop in Adrian(Dream Maker Station Route 66 Souvenir & Gift Shop) but the standoffishness of the staff here at the Teepee was over the top. Stopped in on a roadtrip between Albuquerque and Amarillo based on reviews. I was disappointed as significant amount of merchandise felt very processed with little local artist or designers. I saw three people "working" but never heard a word from them. A great opportunity to highlight the struggling city and bring in travelers is a miss. read more

A must-stop shop along the historic Route 66 in Tucumcari, NM - just a short jaunt off the 40. We came for postcards & left w/everything from vintage toys to Native American wares to Route 66 memorabilia to... PONCHO'S! You might call them Baja hoodies, but growing up surfing the southern CA beaches our crew called them ponchos. A reg staple from our trips to Tijuana, Mexico. Since moving to Nor Cal, they've been hard to come by & we were delighted to find, on our trip to Nebraska last year, many truck stops carry them. So when our daughter asked us to pick one up for her during this trip we thought it would be an easy task. Not so. All the wasted time spent searching out post cards & ponchos, we'd already given up. Enter Tee Pee Curios! Ponchos galore!! But wait, there's more! Every corner of this shop has a treasure waiting to be discovered. We spent over an hour oo-ing & aah-ing & "look at this!"-ing. Here's a list of our finds: - Ponchos (there's a variety of clothing to choose from) - Post cards - Jewelry - Vintage Toys (sling shot/"cowboy & Indian" play set - we play to make friends not to fight) - Native American Flute - Miniature wooden bobble-head animals - Miniature carved stone animals - Shark teeth & Arrowheads - Magnets (state-shaped New Mexico & Route 66 - there's several spinning racks & an entire wall full) - Variety of unusual household nicknacks - Vintage style Gold-rush gum & other treats Note: Some 1 star reviewers have complained about poor treatment. We did not find that the case on our visit. From the moment we entered to a friendly greeting, to the moment we left w/a cheerful goodbye, the two tending the shop were helpful to answer our questions & direct us to whatever we might need. Stopped at this cute little store on our way back to Cali. 1 star review due to awkwardness that our family received; basically, we felt that our family was not treated equally; (1) no greeting when we entered the store (four other groups after were all greeted nicely; (2) I asked one of the lady if they can give me any souvenir recommendation - no response (perhaps, she didn't hear me?); (3) and finally, when we were ready to pay, my wife stood in front of the lady who was busy talking to another worker - when we asked her that we are ready to pay - she finally said $53.35. Very comprehensive gift shop with friendly staff and a couple of pups to greet you as well. They had some things that other shops didn't have, including postcards for the historic Route 66 for the local area which we could not find elsewhere. This place is right across the street from the Route 66 Welcome Center and has a much better selection of tourist gift items. Lots of T-shirts & jewelry, books, pottery, etc. Prices are what you'd expect (maybe a little high) but I thought their jewelry was priced reasonably and seemed to be of decent quality. There's not much to Tucumcari but this place is worth a stop if you're in town. read more

What a fun place to stop while driving along I-40 or Route 66. Has all the nostalgia and kitsch you could want. Only teepee curios left along the way. So I'm going to date myself... in a good way. When traveling Rt 66, I wasn't reminded of the good old days. I was reminded of the movie CARS. I'm young like that. And this place, in my mind, was a combo of Sally's cozy cone motel and Lizzie's curio shop. Tucumcari is the city on Rt 66 probably most like the movie. You have to be here at night to see the neon lights. And it has the cute/nostalgic/historic spots like the Blue Swallow Inn and Tee Pee Curios. We loved this fun little pit stop through New Mexico! Everything in there is authentic. They carry gorgeous jewelry for good prices. You are paying for quality pieces. I bought a gorgeous topaz ring for about $30. My kids were able to find fun little items for themselves too. The outside of the building is adorable and has paintings on the sides so it's a great photo opt as well. This town is tiny so there isn't a ton to do while driving through so I highly recommend this stop! read more

Beautiful neon, friendly guy at the counter, adorable dog. It's so great to see this classic business open along the Mother Road. The prices are reasonable and the selection ranges from super fun cheezy souvenirs to beautiful jewelry. I even found a pair of earrings for my extremely difficult to shop for mom. I love to collect and send postcards and Tepee Curios has multiple spinning racks to choose from-I even had to ask the guy if we could stop mid-checkout because I spotted some postcards I had missed. We were on the road for 6 awesome days, and this stop was a highlight of the trip. read more

Kevin, their dog, is as absolute staple to the business too! They offer all kinds of neat products, and most of them (if not all) are made locally!
