We now have a cantorial soloist, Jessica Tillium who has a lovely voice and does not have the opera back that Cantor Adesnick had. Since the start of COVID-19, the sound system has improved greatly due to all of the live streaming that is done for people unable to travel to services as well as Chevrah Torah and other educational classes. I think the rabbis and staff do an excellent job of making the shul feel inclusive. At the beginning of services, we are asked to turn to a person(s) sitting near us to introduce ourselves to each other. Many of the people have personal name tags they wear who support Temple Emanu-El. There are temporary name tags for those people who are guests and members. I don't think it can get much more Hamish as it already is. Temple Emanu El reaches out to the surrounding community, other synagogues, churches, and the underprivileged who are trying to start their lives over again from the Mary Freedom Hall and local food pantry, non-profit thrift stores, The synagogue community does many more acts of justice and repairing the world. I was back in town for the holidays and my family suggested visiting for their Christmas Eve service. I thought that sounded nice, until I visited their website's "Leadership" page and saw over 10 "pastors" and "elders" that all look the same. Apparently women or people of color are not chosen for leadership positions, although I would bet money that women are the ones doing a lot of the actual work there. To have this demographic profile of leadership isn't that surprising for an evangelical church, but advertising it so plainly on the website seems almost aggressive. Anyway, as a woman (in a leadership position no less!) I didn't want to attend a place that doesn't seem to respect me. I don't remember JFBC being so obviously sexist when I attended in the past, so not sure if they've changed with pastor Chad, or if it's always been this way.

After a long search, my wife and I prayed about it, and God led us to North Metro. We've been a part of this church for 3+ years now. The greatest thing is that they seek to glorify God, teach and live the good news of Jesus Christ, and have a humble leadership team that listens to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. From a consumeristic side, yes, great facilities, organized worship, relevant teaching, great children's care, outreach, and pastoral services. But, the main thing is that they actually worship God first, then serve people second. This is rare among churches these days. May God bless us on our journey, being conformed into the image of Christ.
