I am a current student at TSU and the decision to attend an HBCU was the best decision I have ever made. My father's family all attended here. I am the first generation to attend on my mother's side with four little cousins following in my footsteps. The issue I see at TSU is a lot of people not doing their jobs and then having an attitude when students have a question regarding their accounts. There are a lot of alumni that works at the college and some of them act like they do not care about what is going on. The college has a homey feel, and it is a wonderful opportunity to attend it. From day 1 this was a bad idea. It hasn't been a whole year yet and they sent my daughters $6,000 bill to collections. She made a $6,000 lump sum payment at the beginning of the year. It just bothers me that your poor audits and the poor handling of funds for years and years by board members now have ya'll praying on poor college students, that's just getting out of high school. I am sending this message to express how unprofessional, unethical, and underprepared this HBCU is. I currently reside in NJ and my daughter is a senior in high school at the top of her class, Squadron Commander of her JROTC unit, and involved in a slew of activities that is bettering her current school district as well as others. She's put together new programs for students single-handedly and just an all around great person. TSU was at the top of her list for college attendance but after this past weekend she's not even sure if she wants to attend because of how this current administration has handled fall preview day. I spent almost $2,000 to come to this fall preview day and you people- yes you people- lacked the ability to send an email to cancel. Not only that you cancel on social media 24 hours prior to the event happening. We were getting on our flight! We couldn't even get a letter to excuse the half day she took from school. I wasn't the only parent that felt this way, but I was the only parent that continued into the school to at least get something for my travels. How do you continue to have a football game in the storm but not fall preview day? How do you cancel 24 hours prior when you had the weather predictions all week? Make it make sense. My daughter and I was so disappointed after my Pastor- who is an alum- recommended this school. $2,000 may not be a lot for you but as a single mother of 2 children, it's a crap ton to me. You lost what could have been the next Oprah coming out of this school because your lack of attention, lack of competency, and lack of understanding. I hope you all get replaced with more competent staff and President for future students to have a much better experience! read more

Getting any correspondence and communication from admissions is a nightmare. I was applying as a non-degree seeking student to participate in the crosstown program with the USAF ROTC that is headquarted at TSU. I am sure things will get resolved, but so far it has been a complete shot in the dark trying to get things done. You have to show up in person if you want any sort of communication or status. Just to give an example, MTSU admission responded to application in a matter of a week of application submission for requirements being requested while TSU has not sent a single thing in over 60 days. Minded that I had ordered all transcripts to be sent to them same day I submitted my application, but at least they let me know exactly what they need/received and sent me some sort of communication. read more

THE absolute WORSE HBCU I have ever crossed paths with . Not one single staff member on that campus is helpful . They all are a waste of time and they never answer the phone nor emails . They just want to take your money . I would never in a million yeas recommend this terrible , unprofessional university. A very disorganized school that needs ALOT of structure . I went went to TSU to get an endorsement for teaching. It was affordable and it seemed like I could be done within a year. My classes were online. I finished the program, only to be told that I couldn't be endorsed by them and I would have to find another institution. It wasted my time and my money. The reason they could not endorse me is because they didn't turn some paperwork in on time. This place is unorganized. To accomplish anything at this institution you have to do it yourself. You will spend a lot of time on the phone and you won't be able to reach the right people. I did not get my money back. STAY AWAY! read more

I'm really surprised no one else has reviewed TSU yet. This school really only has 1 good thing going for it and that is it is the only 4 year state school in Nashville. Other than that, this school needs a lot of help. The admissions processes are abysmal and no one really seems to have a clue what's going on, especially for nontraditional students. If you're not someone straight out of high school it's hard to get anyone to give you a straight answer on what has to be done. All of the classes I've taken have been at the Avon Williams campus where most of the staff and professors are incredibly arrogant. Hopefully the new president will be able to make some changes and improvements but as things stand now you're probably better off with MTSU or online with the RODP programs. read more

I didn't graduate from TSU but i did attend the school until my senior year. Overall I must say it was an absolutely wonderful experience. TSU has such a warm homey feel. If you get plugged in, you will feel the unity, like a big blue family :) Like many collegiate educational situations. You get what you put in. I really don't want to write this review, but I don't want anyone else to go through what I did. I was told by endless amounts of people to stay away from this place, and I should have listened. If you're thinking about enrolling here, don't waste your time. Run for the hills. I have been talking in endless circles to the staff trying to get some questions answered about the new A.A.S. nursing program. My appointments have been rescheduled (by faculty) at least three times with no explanation as to why, and the staff was very rude. I was treated with utter apathy and hostility, and I was talked to in a very condescending manner. These people don't know what they're doing, and they have no business in higher education. I have never seen a more disorganized university; it's appalling. No in-building signs, directions, or campus maps. The staff can't even properly answer questions about certain programs. Bottom line: go somewhere where the staff is organized and actually cares about helping people. This place isn't going to be around for too much longer with the way it's operated. read more

The university is run by a bunch of irresponsible people. I cannot even describe how frustrated and mad I am right now. So I wanted to take 2 individual classes online to satisfy the admission requirements of another college's masters program. Dr. Sharon Peters (Director of Off-Campus Programs/EWC) told me that I should go ahead and send in the application, official transcripts, and the check (UNREFUNDABLE application fee). I sent in all the documents as quickly as possible (I spent some money ordering the official transcripts). Everything went well until the following things happened: 1.) I told Dr. Sharon Peters that the online Fall 2012 class schedule did not contain start dates. She told me that they would be sent to me in a separate email. I never got that email. 2.) I was told that after the registration process was completed, I would need to work with Bryan Thorpe - Student Support Counselor, ROCC Contact. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IRRESPONSIBLE COUNSELORS EVER. I sent him some questions (asking him how to register for the classes and what the course syllabi are), and he NEVER replied my emails. I had to call him to get some answers. He told me that the prerequisites for the classes are not really enforced. Well then, why did you people ask me to spend all the money sending official transcripts to you guys? Are you serious? 3.) As if that were not bad enough, Sedric Griffin, Director of Admissions and Recruitment, asked me to complete a certificate of immunization. Seriously? I live in CA, and I would like to take 2 online classes through TSU. And now I have to complete this form? Haven't I spent enough money on the application? read more

TSU staff and professors are grossly incompetent. My immediate family has 2 Masters degrees, 4 Bachelor's degrees, and 1 Associate's degree and have taken classes at 11 different Universities, including APSU, UT Knoxville, and MTSU. Went here for a year to complete pre-requisites for nursing school at another institution. I can only speak for the biological sciences courses I took, but this school is where academic integrity does to die. Cheating was rampant and the teachers were disorganized with the majority having horrible attitudes when they actually showed up. Forget actually getting responses when trying to communicate with them. Waste of money here and you won't learn anything unless you have the discipline to teach yourself. read more

I Know someone who is really close to me that used to work in admissions. They used to get so frustrated at everyone not doing their jobs. Simple computer programs would make admissions much better. Doing most of the paperwork by hand is not smart at all when you are talking about several thousands of students. When they would make suggestions to the head to update the programs and to do more things efficiently, they were met with a stone cold face. They got frustrated and quit. And they enjoyed working there. But too much is too much. read more

I am alumni at this university and now my nephew is a proud student. This is a great school if you buckle down and get what you need from your teachers. My only gripe was with records or anything financial aid wise. They lost things and would send you on a wild goose chase to find them. If you are looking for an official HBCU experience this is a great place to go!! read more

The nursing program is ridiculous. The advisors are disrespectful and degrading. The student portal is basic and antiquated. Teachers are rude and unhelpful. I found one person to be understanding and supportive in the two years I attended. The school is disorganized. I had to call and email several times to correct errors since paperwork was misplaced. I cannot recommend this school to anyone. It's not worth it. read more

I've always wanted to attend an HBCU. With one down the road that I would be able to attend online I thought why not? Wellllllll.....at first I was told that I'd graduate at a certain time because I completed all of the classes needed, I was told 1 month before graduation-and after I purchased c&g, cords, and sashes-that I was 5 credits short. How sway you ask? The advisor who advises right?-added me to classes that didn't pertain to the degree even after asking him was he sure and he said they were not needed and to add insult to injury, I received a few emails congratulating me on my recent Spring graduation from TSU. Ok, I finally got over that and re-enrolled-foolish, I know. I spoke to a very rude lady today in the bursar's office who overtalked me and did not give me an opportunity to tell my side. It's people like that that give the school a bad name. They wonder why they are underfunded and people choose to attend PWI's. I have yet to have a pleasant experience on the phone with anyone there. If they do not want to do their jobs, please let someone else have them. read more

I applied and was accepted at TSU for an endorsement program. I was told that my advisor was one lady and then after MANY failed attempts of calling her for months and instead of directing me to the correct person, she ignored my phone calls. I showed up at orientation hoping someone could help me. Of course no one could, so I gave up. I did speak to the head of the department and they were trying to figure things out. While they were trying to figure things out, I enrolled at another local university and already completed the program. In March, I started getting a bill for a course that I supposedly attended and earned a passing grade in. This is absurd and I cannot believe that I am having to deal with this. They are falsifying information and I am getting a lawyer involved. I am done. read more

The Disability Services, themself, at Tennessee State University deserve 5-stars but I'll give the school itself four stars. I give the school 4 stars due to the fact that the seating , itself, is worn and dirty, while the classrooms on the main campus are outdated. read more

Positive-Beautiful campus in a fun, beautiful city. Negative-I can't get transcripts posted in a timely manner to my account so I can register because it can take 90 days. Classes are now full I could have gotten in if they had posted my records the week they arrived. Can't get people to respond to emails, most staff were unaware which buildings house which majors, even some in same building don't know what else is in their building, ran me back and forth between different offices to do things that still weren't completed from last time I came to campus to get them done. Having to show paper transcripts to department chairs to register for classes I already did prerequisites in since admissions and records department are not up to speed. Staff are friendly and say something is getting done but then I've had to return 3 times already to campus and still haven't solved problems. I hope my teachers are better if I can find a class I need to take still open. Professionalism/performance/knowledge less than what I'm accustomed to from the last college I attended. read more

I am trying to make the 10/15/13 deadline to apply for the ASN program. I was scheduled to take the HESI 10/4 and did not receive the link to pay the rest of the fee to evolve. I have written two emails and gotten no reply. Called Evolve and they say have to get from TSU. Line busy all day. Finally get thru to be told they've been having internet problems for 3 wks and don't know if i will be able to take this Fri. I have taken off today and tomorrow to study and did not hear anything about this. No contact from them about this. I have a seat waiting for me already at Columbia State Community College and will probably just go there because I can already see, as warned, how this is going to be--make 10 copies of anything u turn in, expect stuff to be screwed up, go on wild goose chases about anything and everything...the only draw was that i live so close to either campus. I can remember when the downtown campus belonged to UT and it was the most efficient operation ever. read more
