My primary doctor was concerned about a possible heart attack and sent me to the emergency room. After fainting twice, I was honestly terrified that something even more serious, like a stroke, might happen. I truly believe I was very fortunate to find this clinic during such a frightening time with my health. Because of these stress-related symptoms, I sought help from a cardiologist, a neurologist, and even a psychiatrist. I went to the Emergency Room back in November of 2024 for issues with my balance and vision. I…read morewent from having no balance issues and above normal vision to falling over due to no longer being able to have any sense of balance and the room spinning at one speed in one eye and at a faster speed in the other, which left me unable to see much of anything for the majority of the first two days at the hospital. The doctors ran a battery of tests - CT, CT-A, MRI, tons of blood work. Initially they thought I may have had a stroke or TIA. The imaging revealed it that there was a tiny occlusion, but after several neurologists looked it over, they said it was old and wouldn't account for my symptoms. There was no ischemia and it was so small there wasn't a way (or a point) to treat it according to the neurologists. Then they considered multiple sclerosis, but the imaging came back clear (no lesions). They continued testing, but they could not come to a diagnosis and called me an unicorn. Eventually the docs wanted to try a steroid treatment for MS patients stating that there are people who have MS, even if their imaging is clear, and their symptoms improve with the treatment. I completed the treatment and left the hospital after a week. By the time I got out, I was able to walk with a walker, but my vision was heavily compromised. I also lost the ability to register temperature on the right side of my body and pain was no longer accurately registering. Things that shouldn't hurt (a light touch) caused a great deal of pain and things that should hurt (being hit, touching something very hot) no longer hurt. I also had a great deal of swelling, which I believe was from the steroids. My parents insisted on trying acupuncture and found Joy Health clinic through one of my mom's friends. I didn't know much about acupuncture going in, but was open to trying anything to speed up my recovery. The first thing that really made an impression on me was just how kind of a human being Dr. Joy is. The sessions never feel rushed and went longer than I expected. She always took the time to listen and answer my questions. Always had a good vibe and energy. I felt she genuinely cared and had a vested interest in my conditions improving. I felt pretty terrible the first couple of weeks of getting out of the hospital. Driving was off the table, so getting rides to the appointments has been a humbling experience. I often got there extremely dizzy and nauseous. I always left in better spirits. She encouraged me every session to stay in a positive mindset (along with other things) and how being in a good mental state is just as important as the other components in the process of healing. Fast forward to now. I am now able to walk without assistance. I can move around my house without any major issues, including up and down the stairs which was a nightmare 2 months ago. My vision has improved drastically. I no longer have major issues with being able to read text (I couldn't even see the time or wallpaper of my phone's lockscreen at one point). I still have some dizziness, but nowhere near the level before. If it is there and I am going out, I bring a cane with me just in case. I am able to drive myself to the appointments now. My ability to sense temperature on the right side of my body has greatly improved. The swelling is gone. I remember being in the ICU, unable to see or keep balance, and just wondering if this was what life was going to be going forward. It was terrifying. I am so incredibly grateful to be where I am now and trending positive. I committed to 2 sessions a week with Dr. Joy. She said a few months of treatment could be needed so we are taking it week by week at this point. I am a big believer that you get what you put in so I have never missed or cancelled an appointment and have always been on time. I have taken the herbal medicine she has given me and followed the instructions she provided with when to take it and the temporary dietary changes (for me it was no chicken/pork, radish, green onions, to name a few things). It is difficult to quantify how much of my recovery was due to the acupuncture sessions because so many things have changed. I have physical therapy 3 times a week and am taking some medication the doctors prescribed as well as a handful of supplements. What I will say is this, no matter how bad I felt, it felt there was a shift in my body after each session and it manifested differently over the last several weeks. There was a point early on where I felt that I might die in my sleep and went to bed every night thinking that I may not wake up. After one of the sessions, I felt a large sense of relief from reduced intensity from my symptoms and went from feeling like I was struggling to make it through a day to feeling like things were manageable. I submitted my insurance information a week in advance, and was told someone would be in touch. No one followed up. I showed up to my scheduled appointment and ended up waiting 45 minutes with no communication about what was going on. When I finally said I couldn't wait any longer, the front desk staff told me (very rudely) that they were still verifying my insurance. This was the first I'd heard of it. I had already been told the doctor would see me and that if there were any issues, I'd be informed later about potential charges. When I calmly said she could've been a little kinder about it, she snapped, "I'm done with you," and shoved a refund at me. Completely unprofessional behavior from someone in a healthcare setting. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Patients deserve to be treated with respect, basic communication, and transparency. Beware.
