Yowza! Americans, living in Spain, visiting Poland and getting a menu from a Mexican restaurant explained to us by a Pole in perfect English. Thank you, Victoria!
If you know my reviews, you know that four stars is pretty doggone good. ...and this place is that. I wish I could have given it that fifth star, but here's what went down: Our server, Victoria, was everything you could want: charming, vivacious and informative with an excellent command of the English language. The ambiance was good - a typical transparent tent on a plaza, with requisite heaters (for this time of year) and comfy serapes on each chair to keep your back happy. The food, though, is where we found a hitch. Mind you, today is Constitution Day in Poland, and apparently a few menu items were "just for the day," or week, or whatever. I ordered a classic margarita. Perhaps my taste is skewed by all of the margaritas I've enjoyed in the states, but this one was lacking in sweet. I mean, I'm not asking for a syrupy concoction like you get in the chain restaurants in the US, but this margarita had no sweetness to it at all. (They used a good tequila, though... not the headache-inducing rotgut of so many chain restaurants.). 'Nuf said. Oh, my wife's non-alcoholic drink, the "Moscow?" Imagine a lemonade with chili powder and seltzer. Maybe you'll love it. She didn't, and neither did I.
We opted to each get a different soup, and split an order of tacos. I like spicy food, so I went with the "Spicy Beef Aztec Soup." It was more like a chili that a soup, and I really enjoyed it. A good blend of flavors, textures, and spice. My wife's "Ramirez Soup," however, was a disappointment. They claim it to be "Aromatic beef and chicken broth with Soba noodles, meat and vegetables." What she got was a very salty broth (yes, the soba noodles, veggies and meat were good, but were completely overpowered by the broth - and if there had been twice as many noodles, veggies and meat, it might still not have been enough. We got the sense that the chef had tried out "something new," and just fell flat. This particular item resembled NOTHING that I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant before, no matter how avant-garde. The tacos with pulled pork, however, we both agreed were quite yummy.
We topped our meal off by sharing a piece of cheesecake. While the cheesecake itself was, um, alright(?), the toffee-caramel topping and the "dulce de leche" ice cream scoop that accompanied it were both wonderful.
So there ya go. Will they keep that thin soup on the menu? I hope not. read more
